HUBER SE to Supply 85 Machines for the Expansion of South America’s Largest Wastewater Treatment Plant in Barueri (São Paulo, Brazil)
HUBER SE has received the largest order in the company’s history in the field of mechanical pre-treatment through its Brazilian subsidiary HUBER do Brasil. The company is supplying 85 machines for the expansion of the large wastewater treatment plant in Barueri near the Brazilian metropolis of São Paulo. The wastewater capacity of the plant will be increased from the current 16 m³/s (16,000 liters per second) to 22.5 m³/s and a maximum capacity of 34 m³/s.
85 HUBER machines
The order comprises an immense number of 85 machines, which will be manufactured at HUBER SE’s headquarters in Berching in the approx. 44,000 m² production facility. This makes the Barueri project the largest order in the company’s history in the field of mechanical primary treatment, the first step in the wastewater treatment process.
The company is supplying the following machines:
- 24x HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax®
- 12x HUBER Launder Channel HLC
- 12x HUBER Screenings Wash Press WAP® L
- 20x HUBER Grit Trap GritWolf®
- 10x HUBER Coanda Grit Washing Plant RoSF4
- 5x HUBER Coarse Screen TrashMax®
- 2x HUBER Grab Screen TrashLift
Sustainable HUBER solutions for the São Paulo metropolitan region
The Barueri wastewater treatment plant is of central importance for the quality of life in the rapidly growing metropolitan region of São Paulo, with its population of over 20 million, and for the ecology of the 1,130 km long Tietê River. Since its opening in 1988, the Estação de tratamento de esgoto Barueri treats the largest volume of wastewater in South America and prevents untreated sewage from entering the river. It thus makes a decisive contribution to improving water quality and reducing environmental pollution. For the people, this means not only clean water, but also a sustainable basis for the region’s economic development.
The modernization of the Barueri wastewater treatment plant is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the field of wastewater treatment in South America. In February 2024, Sabesp (Companhia de Saneamento Básico do Estado de São Paulo), Brazil’s largest water and wastewater services company, commissioned the construction consortium consisting of Andrade Gutierrez and Construtora Elevação to expand and modernize the plant. The work is scheduled for completion in 2027 and includes structural and technological improvements such as mechanical pre-treatment, optimized pumping systems, new grit traps, and hydraulic adjustments.
The project is part of the “Integra Tietê” program, which promotes the ecological restoration of the river and the achievement of Brazil’s wastewater targets by 2029. According to Sabesp, the investment plan will total more than 70 billion Brazilian reais (currently around 11.28 billion euros).
