[...]Over 100 completed orders, a total of almost 300 machines in operation in 22 different countries and yet there are still applications where there is a need for a trial. "Trial makes perfect", be it on municipal wastewater treatment plants or for special industrial sludge, the spectrum is diverse. For this purpose, HUBER provides a trial unit of the Sludge Turner SOLSTICE ® , called "HUBER Baby SOLSTICE ® ", on a reduced scale. In the field for over 10 years The trial unit has now been in operation for over 10 years. After trials in Germany, the plant was mainly used in South America. Since its return at the beginning of the year, it has already made stopovers in the south of France and Italy. Simplicity and technical sophistication The trial unit is characterised by its simplicity while at the same time integrating a large number of technical refinements. Transport in a standard 20' container enables fast and cost-effective delivery both by lorry and ship. Once removed from the container, installation and commissioning can be completed in less than two days by a HUBER service technician. HUBER recommends a test period of four to six weeks. During this time, two to three full runs of sludge drying can be carried out, depending on the weather conditions and the test objective. The fully automatic control system with integrated remote access monitors the drying process by measuring the weight loss, documents exhaust air data (in particular the ammonia values) and controls the drying process depending on the weather data. In areas with less favourable climatic conditions, tests can also be carried out with floor heating switched on. The effort required on site is kept to a minimum. The operator helps to set up and dismantle the system and supervises the trials independently during the test period. A dedicated telephone hotline is available to the operator for questions and optimisations. On completion of the trials, the operator receives a complete data set of the test results and a final report. [...]Lyon, France In the south-west of Lyon, France's third largest city, the new modern La Saulaie district is currently under construction. It will provide new flats and houses for more than 2,000 people as well as commercial space, parks and leisure facilities. The existing district on the banks of the Rhône is being modernised and extended on the currently unused site of the French railway company SCNF. Sustainable energy supply As the issue of sustainability plays a similarly important role in France as it does in Germany, a sustainable energy supply for the district was particularly important to the project developers from the city of Lyon. The nearby sewer offers ideal conditions for the district’s heat supply. The Engie SA group had already been awarded the contract as energy supplier in 2021. HUBER technology for energy recovery In the planning phase, HUBER was able to score with reliable machine technology and more than 14 years of experience in the field of energy from wastewater. [...]The first HUBER service consultant tour in New Zealand, organised and planned by our long-time service consultant Martin Burger, marked a significant milestone for HUBER. With a time difference of 12 hours and a flight time of approx. 22 hours, he was faced with great challenges, which he successfully mastered together with colleagues from our partner company Hydroflux at the end of 2024. In his report, Martin Burger talks about an unforgettable journey: ‘New Zealand, known for its active volcanoes and impressive landscapes, provided the setting for a tour full of technical highlights and enriching encounters. The first service consultant tour to Australia had already taken place in 2022, organised in collaboration with Hydroflux. This proved so successful that it has now been extended to New Zealand. The next tour in this region is planned for 2026. The tour was excellently organised by Hydroflux and included customer visits to the North Island of New Zealand. The aim was to provide customers with professional service advice on site and at the same time deepen the knowledge of our local partners. I was accompanied on the tour by three colleagues from the Hydroflux team: Stewart Harris, Jamsheed Tata and Joshua Eickhoff. Tour details Day 1 and 2: Taupo region After arriving in Taupo, we visited the Taumarunui and Whakapapa sewage treatment plants, the latter at the foot of the Ruapehu volcano. This volcano, which was last active in 2007, was the setting for the film ‘The Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King’. Further stops were the sewage treatment plants in Ohakune and Motuoapa. Day 3 and 4: Kerikeri region The second stage took us north of Auckland to the Kerikeri region. We visited the Kaihoe, Rawene, Whatuwhiwhi and Kaitaia sewage treatment plants. A special moment of the tour was the meeting with Michael Jackson from the Ventia wastewater treatment plant. The customer's enthusiasm about the direct support from a German HUBER service consultant was overwhelming. A cultural highlight was the visit to the ‘Hundertwasser toilet’ in Kawakawa. Designed by the Austrian artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, it was opened in 1999 and is now one of the most famous public toilets in the world. Day 5: Hydroflux office, Auckland On the fifth and final day of the tour we met at the Hydroflux office. Here I shared our experiences with 15 colleagues from Australia and New Zealand and organised another digital training session on the HUBER machines. To summarise, I can say that the service consultant tour in New Zealand was a complete success. In addition to providing technical support and customer advice, we were able to expand our partners' knowledge and deepen our collaboration. Working closely with Hydroflux once again demonstrated the importance of strong partnerships. The positive feedback from customers confirms that HUBER Global Service and especially our service consultants are on the right track with their commitment to strengthening and expanding customer relationships in the long term. [...]Houston, TX USA In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas Gulf Coast and struck it hard. The devastating category 4 hurricane caused unprecedented flooding. In addition to more than $125 billion in property damage, the storm completely destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes. Within just four days, more than one metre of rain per square metre fell in many areas in the Houston region, making Harvey the rainiest storm ever recorded in the United States. Since Hurricane Harvey, the Houston region has repeatedly experienced severe storms, which is why the National Weather Service (NWS) has labelled Houston ‘America's Flood Capital’. The counties in the Houston region have a complex system of dams, pumping stations, reservoirs and retention basins. Fort Bend County, a county in southwest Texas, is part of this system and has more than 100 miles of dykes to contain floodwaters. Fort Bend, TX: pump station discharge and capacity improved 400% In response to Hurricane Harvey, the Fort Bend, TX Levee District No. 2 embarked on a major upgrade project to increase the flow and capacity of one of its pump stations by 400%. The goal of the project was to protect the area around the district from 100- year floods in the future. At the heart of the pumping station are seven newly installed vertical turbine pumps with an output of 1,500 HP. Together, these pumps have a total capacity of 63,000 l/s. HUBER screening technology for successful operation of the pumping station HUBER was commissioned to supply the necessary screens for the successful operation of the pumping station. This essential cleaning stage protects the downstream pumps from any contamination that usually occurs during flood and rain events. 6 HUBER Coarse Screen TrashMax® In co-operation with the engineering office, the plant constructor and the owner of the pumping station, the HUBER Coarse Screen TrashMax® with its unique rake design was selected as the screen of choice. The screen, whose main function is to protect downstream equipment, offers a uniquely high intake and discharge capacity in addition to high operational safety and reliable capture of bulky screenings. HUBER was therefore commissioned to manufacture and supply six HUBER Coarse Screen TrashMax® units. The 11.5 metre high screens have a bar spacing of 76 mm and fit perfectly hydraulically into the six almost 2.5 metre wide channels. These are located in the inlet of the pumping station next to the dyke area. The hydraulic capacity of each individual screen is up to 12,000 l/s. The hydraulically largest pumping station of its kind in Texas The ‘André D. McDonald Pumping Station’ in Sugar Land, TX was successfully commissioned in October 2021. Hydraulically, it is the largest of its kind in the state of Texas. It provides an effective measure to protect the homes, businesses and hospitals served by the district. Many of the 290’s STRAINPRESS® supplied would’ve been single units, but on the larger sites like Five Fords in Welsh Water required 4 SP 290’s, Minworth & Coles Hill in Severen Trent required 6 & 4 SP 290’s respectively. The capacity of the STRAINPRESS® SP 430 is just over double that of the SP290. The flow rate of the SP 430 with a 5mm basket @3% ds sludge is 160M3/Hr compared to 75M3/Hr on the SP 290. Cost savings can be made by: Reduced number of units (including panels), Reduced gantry size, footprint, Minimise work time onsite, Reduced maintenance and power requirements. Intake screens need to be “fish friendly” and demonstrate compliance with the Eels Regulations. The past 12 months have seen increasing uptake of the Ro9 units on a hire basis by HUBER’s industrial customers and the water companies. [...]Digestate is able to play an important role in soil replenishment, but can require some processing before use as an alternative to mineral fertilisers. The Problem AD plants receive a combination of different food wastes from varying sources, with some coming in retail packaging or containing significant plastics contamination. To utilise the waste, material goes through a de-packaging plant designed to separate the valuable food waste from the packaging. Unfortunately, the side effect is that some plastics are broken into smaller pieces and mixed into the resulting “soup”. While these plants do a good job and retain the more bulky pieces of plastic, it is difficult to ensure that no plastics are passed forward. As the plastics cannot be digested, they pass through the plant, leaving with the digestate. Public awareness of plastics is particularly high right now, with the consequences to the environment being well publicised. In addition to the unwanted bad press, residual plastics in digestate can prevent digestate from meeting PAS 100, restricting use and value. PAS 110 is a Publicly Available Specification (PAS) ensuring that sites “produce digested material that meets market needs and protects the environment.” For “Total glass, metal, plastic and any ‘other’ non-stone, man-made fragments > 2 mm” the upper limit is 0.5 % m/m dry matter.
