[...]The HUBER Heat Exchanger RoWin is unique of its kind. The wastewater heat exchanger brilliantly combines excellent heat transfer and automatic surface cleaning. A screw ensures automatic removal of sediments. The RoWin heat exchanger can therefore be used for any sort of wastewater, though municipal wastewater is certainly the most frequent application. The ‘raw material’ wastewater is taken directly from the sewer or downstream of the mechanical treatment stage on the WWTP. But the thermal energy contained within the wastewater does not get lost on a WWTP. Although the wastewater is in contact with cold ambient air in several tanks, it is on the other hand heated in some processes. It can therefore be assumed that the clarified water has a relatively high temperature when discharged into the receiving water body. Due to the biological treatment stage a certain minimum temperature is required in the inlet to a wastewater treatment works, In the outlet, however, a low temperature is even desired as the introduction of heat into the receiving water system considerably contributes to eutrophication. Unlimited heat extraction at the outlet of a WWTP is therefore no problem. The extraction of energy from wastewater in the inlet to a wastewater treatment plant is therefore a solution that suggests itself. The HUBER Heat Exchanger RoWin is of course able to fulfil also this task. But a sediments removal screw seems out of place not only from the point of view of an expert. If the WWTP effluent is utilised, it can be done without a removal screw. Even if the WWTP effluent meets all required parameters related to the substances contained, it cannot be excluded that heat transfer is impaired by sediments on the heat exchanger pipes. The automated cleaning system of the RoWin heat exchanger is therefore kept. In contrast to municipal wastewater upstream of a sewage treatment works, its effluent flows on a higher geodetic level so that it is unnecessary to lift the level, which would be energy and cost-intensive. For optimal utilisation of the potential energy contained within the wastewater flow the best position where to install the heat exchanger is in the outlet channel of the sewage treatment works. As the height of a module and the number of modules are variable, it is possible to install the RoWin either in an existing or suitably designed tank or channel so that no additional installation space is required. Screwable covers ensure on the one hand that legal safety standards are met and guarantee on the other hand easy access for maintenance and repair. The cooling water circuit to the heating station can be installed frost-proof and hidden to the eye to supply the heat pump with eco-friendly, free energy. Municipalities can in this way save considerable energy costs that are necessarily involved when heating digestors or supplying social buildings with conventional energy. [...]At the IFAT 2005 in Munich the unrivalled market leader in the field of grit washing plants presents itself as a real champion: The 1,000 COANDA Grit Washing units sold impressively demonstrate that this plant is being accepted as the standard solution in mechanical wastewater treatment. When the first pilot plants were built in 1994, many considered it unnecessary to additionally wash the grit produced by a sewage treatment plant. The industry took a stance against this technology regarding it as technically infeasible. When attending site a sense of amusement by the plant operators was apparent as we arrived on site in our blue overalls, carrying tools and hoses to work on the COANDA Grit Washing Plant. But it worked! It worked so well that Huber decided to patent the COANDA Grit Washing Plant and introduced it market wide immediately. The launch was a complete if unexpected success. It should be noted that none of the competitors – with the exception of a small mechanical engineering company, realised that contaminated sewage treatment plant grit could be washed at all. Today, 10 years later, sewage treatment grit washing plants are state-of-the-art technology. Following our lead virtually all of our competitors now offer their grit washing plant. The fact that about 95% of our competitors imitate or follow the HUBER principle underlines the excellent function of our COANDA Grit Washing Plant. With the exception of a few competitors who simply copy the original and consequently face legal action for patent infringement, the others try omitting one patented feature which results in the loss of equipment function and performance. As a result, these copies have significant weak points compared to the original, including the following: The plant requires < 4 mm preliminary screening resulting in a large amount of unwashed grit/gravel bypassing the screening process. Higher wear due to the high speed stirrer Excessive wear caused by large pieces of stone and gravel being in contact with the stirrer. The plant settings have to be changed for coarse grit/gravel or fine grit. The plant has a very high surface characteristic and is therefore unable to achieve the requested separation efficiency. The plant has no separate discharge for washed out organics. The plant works with a constant fluidised bed and therefore achieves only sporadic satisfactory results. At the present time investments required by legislation are frequently postponed due to a lack of funds. The few grit washing projects that are undertaken are subject to increasingly intense competition resulting, in most cases, price being the deciding factor at the cost of functionality and technical features. It is only after the project has been completed and a short time has elapsed that it is found that the separation and washing requirements are not met, the plant produces excessive wear or the minerals yield is unsatisfactory. This then means that an investment is required in order to meet the plant requirements. Continuity and quality has been proven with the Huber unit with over 1000 units in operation. This includes also wastewater disposal and treatment plants, the capacity of which needs to be extended and their technical standard improved to state-of-the-art. HUBER SE received the order for the supply of 28 RoDisc® Rotary Mesh Screens for the largest WWTP in the city Lie De. The screens will treat the daily produced wastewater of in total more than 2.15 million inhabitants from a connected area of 150 square kilometres. The peak load will be 8,43 cubic metre per second (!). The treated wastewater will be discharged into the river Pearl. The RoDisc® Rotary Mesh Screen is a micro filter and in this project used to pretreat the wastewater prior to its treatment in a UV disinfection plant. Reliable retention of the activated sludge flocs and fine suspended matter not retained by the secondary clarifier is the precondition for a trouble-free and efficient operation of the UV disinfection plant. The virtually solids-free effluent from the disc filter reduces current consumption and increases the efficiency and life of the UV disinfection plant. The RoDisc® Micro Screen works on the basis of the well-proven drum filter principle. The screen consists of 24 horizontally arranged rotating filter discs installed on a central shaft and is submerged by up to 60 % while in operation. The filter discs remain in rest position during the filtration process. The solids settle by gravity on the disc surfaces themselves, which leads to gradual blinding of the mesh with retained solids as the filtration process progresses, resulting in an increasing pressure differential. When the predefined maximum pressure differential has been reached, the solids are removed from the filter surfaces by the slow rotation of the filter discs combined with a spray nozzle bar. The spray nozzles are pump fed utilising some of the filtered wastewater. The removed solids are washed into a trough situated below the segment openings prior to being discharged to the WWTP inlet and the filtration process runs on continuously whilst the filter discs are being cleaned. One filter disc consists of 12 individual filter segments made of high-quality polypropylene. The filter mesh is in this project a stainless steel mesh. Thermal embedding has been applied to fix the mesh on the filter plates. The advantages of this sort of mesh are in particular its defined separation size, long life and stability. Thermal embedding achieves the form-locked connection of the mesh with the filter plate so that the mesh is durably protected and safely fixed. Project Scope HUBER SE has equipped other large projects in China with RoDisc® Rotary Mesh Screens. Disc filters have been supplied also to the WWTPs Shi Jing (6 RoDisc® 30), Jiang Ning I (2 RoDisc® 20), iang Ning II (4 RoDisc® 26) and Wuxi (2 RoDisc® 20). Due to its low pressure loss and space requirement, the disc filter could be integrated without the need to change the WWTP concept but with the result of a significantly improved and reliable effluent quality.[...]
