IFAT 18 Sludge Treatment The HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® is successfully in use worldwide and will be presented at IFAT in various sizes. The machines are continuously optimised by HUBER and offer best dewatering performance at highest energy efficiency. The simplicity of operation, ease of maintenance and the small footprint are further plus points of this machine. Special highlight: the interaction of an operating HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® and the new HUBER IoT platform will be presented live. Both nationally and internationally, HUBER has implemented numerous projects in the field of thermal sewage sludge treatment . For all solar sewage sludge drying plants, HUBER relies on the HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE® in combination with the innovative HUBER climate control system . As a result of continuous development, HUBER solar sewage sludge drying systems are characterised by trouble-free operation, best energy efficiency as well as simplest operation and highest safety. Interested visitors can find out about the current status of the HUBER solar sewage sludge drying project at the Bahr El-Baqar plant (Egypt) at IFAT. This water treatment plant has been awarded the title of the world’s largest plant of its kind by Guinness World Records in 2021. More than two billion cubic meters of water are to be treated here annually on an area of about 650,000 square meters. HUBER supplied, among others, 128 Sludge Turners SOLSTICE® for the large-scale project, so that a total of approx. 490,000 tons of dewatered sludge per year can be dried from 24 % to approx. 75 % dry residue. As an alternative to solar sewage sludge drying, the HUBER Belt Dryer BT is the ideal solution. Due to its modular design, the belt dryer can be adapted to on-site conditions both in terms of energy and construction. Innovative concepts for heat extraction from the drying process also enable maximum energy recovery. This can be fed into a local heating network, for example, or used at the sewage treatment plant to heat the digester. Mechanical Wastewater Treatment As the global market leader in mechanical wastewater treatment, HUBER will of course also show the latest developments in the field of screening systems . In addition to the latest version of the world-renowned HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® , which will be on show in the different versions RakeMax ® HF, RakeMax® J and RakeMax® Hybrid, other proven HUBER screens will be exhibited: the HUBER Belt Screen EscaMax® , HUBER Coarse Screen TrashMax® , HUBER Band Screen CenterMax® and the HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT® systems. For the first time, HUBER will showcase its newly developed HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® CF at IFAT 2022. This innovative screen opens up completely new possibilities in the field of mechanical wastewater treatment as it features a worldwide unique U-shaped bar rack through which the wastewater flows from inside to outside. As another highlight, HUBER will present the worldwide unique HUBER Safety Vision system in live operation at IFAT. This is an innovative system of contaminant detection for screens. High-tech sensors continuously measure the form and size of the coarse material transported by the screen rake. Whenever the system detects that any critical coarse material is present, the screen will be stopped and a corresponding warning message sent to the plant operator. This reliably prevents an unintentional blockage or damage to the screen or downstream units. Furthermore, the system is able to record the amounts of screenings separated and discharged in real time. HUBER also offers comprehensive solutions for screenings treatment. At the heart of this is the HUBER Wash Press WAP® , which has been tried and tested thousands of times and will be on show in various versions at IFAT. As a novelty, HUBER will show the innovative WAP® wear detection . The wear common to washing presses is reliably monitored and an unplanned and expensive machine breakdown can be replaced by planned maintenance. As a specialist for solids-liquid separation, HUBER has been dealing with grit separation , among other technologies, for decades. With the newly developed HUBER Grit Trap GritWolf® HUBER is now setting new standards in the field of grit separation: Due to optimised inflow conditions combined with the advantages of a lamella separator, the HUBER GritWolf® is able to separate up to 90 % of grit with a grain size ≥ 75 µm on a reduced footprint. The new GritWolf® grit trap is available in several sizes for flow rates from 160 m³/h (1 MGD) to 3,150 m³/h (20 MGD). With the HUBER CarbonWin ® System , HUBER offers an interesting option to convert sewage treatment plants to change from an aerobic to an anaerobic sludge stabilisation. The first step of the HUBER CarbonWin ® System is a mechanical treatment stage followed by a grit and grease trap. A HUBER Drum Screen LIQUID is installed downstream of this assembly. The wastewater cleaned by the drum screen is fed to the subsequent aerobic treatment facility, while the separated fines are thickened and fed to the digester for anaerobic treatment. Filtration and Fourth Treatment Stage For the removal of trace substances such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals and hormones, which are increasingly discussed in public, HUBER offers the adsorptive removal process using granulated activated carbon for the fourth treatment stage . Industrial Solutions In another focus area, HUBER will show the public its competence and experience in the field of industrial wastewater treatment for numerous industry sectors. At IFAT 2022, HUBER will focus primarily on solutions for the disposal and paper industry and the dairy and meat processing industry . [...]On Thursday, 28 April, nine girls visited HUBER SE at the company’s headquarters in Berching to learn about apprenticeships in the fields of wastewater technology, construction, crafts, mechatronics and IT on Girls’ Day 2022. HUBER participated in Girls’ Day for the eleventh time. Exciting insights into the fields of wastewater technology, construction, handicraft, mechatronics and IT The girls from grades six to eight, who came from the region from Breitenbrunn to Freystadt, immersed themselves in the “world of clean water” during the day and learned about the sustainable water cycle. Before the schoolgirls could get a taste of two of the industrial-technical apprenticeships, they were allowed to assemble their own water filter to better understand what the machines produced by HUBER do. In the further course of the day, employees and trainees of the departments made themselves available as guides and showed the girls their workplace and daily tasks for two hours each. Head of Human Resources Michael Hiller: “Vocational orientation should be free of gender stereotypes” “Professional orientation should be free of gender stereotypes”, says HUBER’s Head of Human Resources Michael Hiller. “The fact that we are already participating in Girls’ Day for the eleventh time underlines how important this topic is to us at HUBER. Girls’ Day aims to offer girls and young women practical experience in professions in which generally fewer women work. On Wednesday, 6 April, the official ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of a new production hall took place; the completion of the construction is also planned for this year. The investment volume of the new building with an enclosed area of 7,000 m² amounts to approximately ten million euros. With this expansion, production capacities will increase to a total of approx. 35,000 m². Groundbreaking ceremony by District Administrator Willibald Gailler, Berching's Deputy Mayor Christian Meissner and HUBER’s Executive and Supervisory Boards CEO Georg Huber: “A very special day in the 150-year history of the company” The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Wednesday, 6 April, with the participation of District Administrator Willibald Gailler, Berching's Deputy Mayor Christian Meissner and the responsible architect Hans-Jürgen Distler (Distler Architekten + Ingenieure GmbH). With capacities in parts manufacturing (welding) and final assembly, the production there currently only represents a part of the necessary process chain. In the course of 2022 and 2023, the location will expand to the complete vertical range of manufacture, including its own pickling hall, cutting and machining. Approximately 13,000 m² of new production and office space will be created with a total investment volume, including machine technology, of around 35 million US dollars. New process technologies and business fields In addition to completely new process technologies in water and sludge treatment, which require new products, HUBER is also successively opening up new business fields. The next IFAT will now take place from May 30 to June 3, 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic has a massive impact—also on the global environmental technology industry. In consultation with the Executive Board of the Exhibitors’ Advisory Board and the conceptual partners of IFAT, Messe München conducted a survey among the IFAT exhibitors, revealing that most respondents are against holding IFAT from September 7 to 11, 2020. Hence, IFAT at the planned time would be unacceptable—not only for Messe München but also for the trade fair participants. In addition, according to the latest announcements, major events must not be held until the end of August 2020. In order to provide all customers a reliable basis for planning and in close consultation with the Executive Board of the Exhibitors' Advisory Board, IFAT is canceled. “A safe and successful IFAT 2020 for all concerned—that was our primary concern. Due to the still unforeseeable circumstances, this objective is unfortunately no longer feasible, even for the new date,” explains Stefan Rummel, Managing Director of Messe München. [...]In the Colombian city Medellín the new sewage treatment plant Bello (pronounced Bejo ) is presently under construction. The plant is designed for 2.75 million PE and a capacity of 6.5 m³/s. To treat the sewage sludge that is generated on site the environmental company in the Upper Palatinate in Bavaria installed the well-proven HUBER Belt Dryer BT for this international mega project. A daily amount of 400 tons of dewatered sewage sludge is generated in Bello, of which approximately 310 tons are produced on site and another 90 tons come from a second sewage treatment plant in the city centre of Medellín, San Fernando. The sludge from San Fernando is transported to Bello by trucks. The according constructions and devices for transport, acceptance and storage will be provided. The plant operator Empresas Publicas de Medellín (EPM) placed the focus on a sustainable and economical disposal of the generated sewage sludge. Several technological concepts were analysed and tested under the prevailing conditions. The concept that was finally selected combines power-heat cogeneration with sewage sludge drying. HUBER SE participated in the tender for the project as the consortium manager in cooperation with a renowned Colombian plant manufacturer. The tender specification included the turnkey erection, engineering, construction and operation of the plant. After evaluation of the submitted technical and commercial offers the order was placed with the consortium under the management of HUBER in August this year. At the end of 2012 already, HUBER could secure the order for the supply, installation and commissioning of the complete mechanical equipment for the preliminary wastewater treatment. Due to references like this one and numerous successfully operating similar installations in the field of thermal sewage sludge treatment HUBER could convince the customer to be the right partner for this prestigious project. The total order value of the project is more than 50 million US dollar. The construction time will be only 22 months. The consortium will then also operate the plant for a certain period of time. Load-dependently controlled gas turbines which are supplied by the consortium will generate the electric power for the operation of this sewage treatment plant. The exhaust heat generated in this process will be used to dry the sewage sludge in the HUBER Belt Dryer. This solution is another step towards an energy-optimised operation of the complete sewage treatment plant. Excess energy is fed to the public grid. Perfectly matched state-of-the-art technologies and fully automated electrical control systems and process control systems are applied in this project. The concept implemented here for the utilisation of sewage sludge is path-breaking not only for Latin America, also in Germany it can serve as an innovative solution with downstream thermal sludge utilisation and phosphorus recovery under the aspect of the upcoming amendment of the Sewage Sludge Ordinance. In the course of its almost 20-year success story, the RakeMax ® has become the flagship among screening systems. The HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax ® , firmly established in the market and first presented to the public at the International Trade Fair for Sewage Technology IFAT 2005, has meanwhile proven itself more than three thousand times on the worldwide market of wastewater technology due to its versatile application possibilities. HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® HF In the course of continuous development, another innovative screen type based on the successful RakeMax® was already developed in 2010 in the field of influent screening: the cranked version of the multi-rake bar screen called RakeMax ® HF (High Flow). This screen version consists of a flat and therefore hydraulically very advantageous bottom screening section with a subsequent transition into a steep conveying section. Here, the positive characteristics of the proven RakeMax® – reliable solids separation and high screenings discharge capacity – are combined with low hydraulic screen loss due to a large and effective bar rack surface of the screen. Due to the extremely flat inclination of the bar rack of 30°, the screen section through which the flow passes is always double the depth of the approaching flow. HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® J The HUBER RakeMax® J is also a modified variant of the proven Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax®. In contrast to the standard version, the screen bars of the RakeMax® J are not straight, but curved towards the bottom of the channel. The additional designation “J” is also derived from the shape of the bar rack, as the contour of the screen bars resembles the silhouette of this letter. The screen rake moves along the curvature of the screen bars and describes a segment of a circle in this section. The flat inclination of the rake bars directly in the bottom area results in an overall larger cross-section of the screen through which the flow passes, which leads to lower hydraulic losses as well as to a reduction of the flow velocity in the gaps between the screen bars. In this screen system, the curved bar rack is reliably cleaned in a comparable way by the screen cleaner rake with corresponding meshing teeth. [...]The HUBER Technology Foundation supports Shepherd Pido and Jakob Reinhard of the organisation Technik ohne Grenzen (Technology without Borders, Germany): making the local public aware of the issue water and the water cycle is one of the keys to sustainability and success. Numerous water well projects have been implemented but in many cases it happens that the successful completion of the project is documented with some nice photos for the donators and all parties involved before much of the project is forgotten after some years. This is also the reason why an estimated $300 million have got "lost" in water well construction. A study has shown that some water wells, for example in Ghana, are still functional, even after 20 years. Instead of just drilling for water the organisations have created the necessary structures and the people's awareness for water and its circulation. The project in Owumunam has therefore a strong focus on interdisciplinarity. Even if the technical engineering approach is also important, it is not the major part of this project. In this case, it is mainly about to provide the people living there with the necessary knowledge – about the value and economical use of water on the one hand, and about the social structures required to maintain the well for a long time on the other hand. This is the only way to guarantee sustainability. The village has made the first step and shown that they are willing to follow this way by starting to collect money for a maintenance and repair fond. By the cooperation between the German regional groups of Technik ohne Grenzen in Munich and Cape Coast in Ghana, the two students Shepherd Pido and Jakob Reinhard together with their project team are intensively collaborating across cultural barriers. Their sometimes different views on the topic broadens the perspectives of both and helps them find the best possible solution. The main focus is on developing a maintenance and repair workshop to sensitise the local people for the issue and thus ensure the safe and reliable water supply for the village in the long term. After IFAT 2020 had been cancelled due to the Corona pandemic, this year’s leading world trade fair proved to be very successful for HUBER. Bavarian Minister of State Glauber impressed by HUBER products Already on Monday, May 30, IFAT started with a highlight: Thorsten Glauber, Bavarian State Minister for the Environment and Consumer Protection, was given an exclusive tour of the 1,100 m² booth by the HUBER Board and was very impressed by the products and solutions. Interesting excursions, numerous delegations visiting the company From Tuesday to Thursday, several exciting excursions took place, where the participants could experience HUBER products and solutions live in action. They were enthusiastic about all destinations: the Bayreuth WWTP, the Vohburg and Nuremberg WWTPs, and the company Emter in Altenstadt and the Penzing WWTP. Several delegations, among others from the European People’s Party (Europäische Volkspartei), Bündnis 90/Die Grünen Bavaria, and the Chinese Association for Resource and Environmental Science in Germany (CVRU e.V.), as well as a large number of interested customers, contacts, and visitors made the trade fair experience at the HUBER booth a vivid event that was entertaining and interesting. [...]It was just on April 1 that we could celebrate the signing of the 1000th Service and Maintenance Contract with a sewage treatment plant in Germany! The plant is located in Jagstzell, a municipality in the Ostalbkreis, a district in the east of Baden-Württemberg. Over the years, HUBER Service and Maintenance Contracts have developed to become a worldwide highly demanded service product of the HUBER Global Service. Today, such contracts exist for more than 2,500 machines and plants in Germany alone. The municipality of Jagstzell also decided recently to make use of the extensive benefits of a HUBER Service Contract. Their decision means another milestone in the success history of the HUBER Global Service. At the beginning of April, the HUBER service team together with the municipality’s representatives celebrated this event on site in Baden-Württemberg. At the celebratory reception in the town hall, Mayor Raimund Müller told about how STP Jagstzell has developed over the years and that especially the installation of the HUBER Complete Plant meant a quantum leap in the sewage treatment plant’s history. ”Whether nature, the environment or the people living here, we want the best for all and feel we are in best hands with HUBER in this respect”, he summed up. Finally, the group made a tour of the sewage treatment and used this opportunity to exchange with the staff on site.
