Both of these projects improve the sewage treatment capacity for these resorts to reduce maintenance and downstream blockages. Project Profile Both of these projects were upgrades to the sites effluent treatment plant to include for a provision of upstream screening. [...]Powell River, BC, Canada Proven products from the Safe Access Solutions (SAS) business unit for Canada: HUBER is supplying a total of 6 Pressure-Tight Doors TT7 for the new wastewater treatment plant in Powell River in the Canadian province of British Columbia. The region around the Canadian metropolis of Vancouver, located in the southwest part of the country on the border to the United States, has become a “hotspot” for HUBER products such as stainless steel pressure-tight and access doors. HUBER had received the order in June 2021 from the responsible contractor Graham Construction. The project was secured after early collaboration with the responsible engineer and the Canadian company BowRio Water Technologies. The contractor reported that there were no problems with the product, neither leaks nor problems with the stainless steel workmanship or dimensions. The doors were easy to install – overall, HUBER stainless steel doors are a “great product”. HUBER has been fortunate enough to work with Graham Construction on many other projects as well, and we look forward to continue that partnership. Six HUBER Pressure-Tight Doors TT7 as new access points The scope of supply includes 6 HUBER Pressure-tight Doors TT7 measuring 800 millimeters x 1800 millimeters made of pressure-resistant 316 stainless steel. In the future, the doors will serve as access points to the plant’s bioreactors and aerobic digesters. The proximity to the sea and the harsh wastewater conditions made it necessary for the doors to be made entirely of 316 stainless steel. They must also withstand seven meters of pressure and have a central wheel latch that can be operated from both sides. Compliance with state environmental regulations The City of Powell River on the Sunshine Coast in Canada’s far southwest had already begun planning a new wastewater treatment plant in 2011. The plant would have to comply with (federal) environmental regulations, for which the city received funding from the Canadian government and the state of British Columbia in 2019. $76 million project The new Powell River wastewater treatment plant is a major project in which the city is investing $76 million. This new plant will combine all wastewater from the existing Westview, Townsite and Wildwood plants; the three plants will be decommissioned once the new Powell River plant is in operation. [...]The HUBER ROTAMAT ® family is the foundation on which HUBER SE started its development in wastewater technology. On this basis, the company has been able to grow and develop continuously. With over 30 different machine types in mechanical pre-treatment alone, HUBER SE has developed into a globally operating company. Nevertheless, the ROTAMAT ® machines remain an important cornerstone of HUBER SE and now demonstrate that this system is still outstanding, especially in large projects with screen basket diameters of over 2 metres. The efficiency and reliability of the ROTAMAT ® technology is even evident in demanding applications and the technology continues to prove its worth in wastewater treatment. HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT ® Ro2 impresses in Austria and Colombia With a dry weather inflow of 103,600 m 3 per day, the Salzburg-Siggerwiesen municipal wastewater treatment plant is the largest in the province of Salzburg. The plant has been in operation since 1986 and in 2023 they installed the fourth generation of intake screens. After detailed considerations, the management of the wastewater treatment plant finally decided in favour of two HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT ® Ro2 units with a screen basket diameter of 2.6 m and a bar spacing of 3 mm. In spring 2023, the perforated plate screens from 2009 were removed and replaced by the new screens. These fit exactly into the two existing channels and have now been convincing for over a year with low maintenance and high separation performance. Especially the use of the air knife in combination with a permanently installed high-pressure cleaning system offers several advantages. The air knife cleans the screen basket of the Ro2 with a certain air pressure and thus saves the use of the spray nozzle bar installed as standard. Only the high-pressure cleaning system uses water at a pressure of 120 bar every three operating hours to intensively clean the screen basket. The use of these two components therefore saves both water and the maintenance time and costs for manual cleaning. The HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT ® Ro2 is also used in the Barranquilla wastewater treatment plant in Colombia. HUBER sold the first Ro2 unit with a diameter of 2.6 m and a bar spacing of 2 mm back in 2017. It treats a wastewater flow of 934 l/s and convinced the customer. This is demonstrated above all by the fact that this year the extension of the plant was also awarded to HUBER SE after the competition was not convincing. Two more Ro2s of the same size will therefore be delivered next year and will thus continue to ensure wastewater treatment there. Not only the HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT ® Ro2 units are convincing. The ROTAMAT ® STAR and ROTAMAT ® RPPS screens show how flexible the ROTAMAT ® concept is and how it can be utilised in other fields of application. Pre-screening of wastewater upstream of membrane systems in the USA Pre-screening the wastewater before it goes through a membrane system plays a crucial role in water treatment and is becoming increasingly important in the USA. Its main aim is to protect downstream membrane systems and improve the efficiency of water treatment. At the same time, it relieves the downstream treatment stages and reduces maintenance costs. Various HUBER technologies are used for pre-screening, including the ROTAMAT ® STAR and RPPS screens. Similar to the ROTAMAT ® Ro2 screen, these machines combine the functions of screening, washing, discharging, compacting and dewatering in one compact and robust unit. In contrast to the ROTAMAT ® Ro2, however, the ROTAMAT ® STAR and RPPS are equipped with a perforated plate screen. This enables two-dimensional screening, which ensures a higher separation efficiency. The screen basket of the ROTAMAT ® RPPS has an aperture width of at least 1.5 mm, which already makes it suitable for membrane pre-screening. If even finer screening is required, the folded screen basket of the ROTAMAT® STAR can be used. This can be designed with a hole diameter of 1 mm and thus enables even finer separation. In addition, the screening surface is increased, which leads to a higher flow rate due to the star-shaped folding of the screen basket. In the USA, these two machine types have proven their worth in membrane pre-screening over the last two years. As in Salzburg-Siggerwiesen, the large machines are now also being used there. Both the ROTAMAT ® RPPS with a hole diameter of 2 mm and four machines are being used in one project, as well as the ROTAMAT ® STAR with two machines and a hole diameter of 1 mm. Two further orders were landed in the USA last year. ROTAMAT ® STAR with a basket diameter of 2.0 m and ROTAMAT ® RPPS with a diameter of 2.2 m are being used to protect the membranes. Another special feature of the two orders is that these machines are manufactured entirely at the HUBER Technology, Inc. production site in Denver, North Carolina and therefore directly in the USA. From West to East: major projects are in Asia HUBER ROTAMAT ® machines have proven themselves not only in America, but also in South Korea and India, leading to major projects. In South Korea, a total of 30 ROTAMAT ® STAR units with a screen basket diameter of 3 metres and a hole width of 1 mm for fine screening of wastewater will be supplied. Customers in India are also impressed. A project for a sewage treatment plant is in the pipeline there, which will be equipped with ten of the largest ROTAMAT ® STAR screens. [...]Current situation In industrial production, products are typically manufactured from raw materials using water and external energy. In addition to residual and waste materials, used water and not inconsiderable amounts of surplus energy in the form of waste heat are usually generated. In addition to immediate reutilisation of the heat energy within the production process and/or direct discharge from the system via separate cooling systems such as cooling towers, larger amounts of heat are also discharged via the wastewater. Increasing demands on discharge quality requirements Particularly in the case of industrial plants with direct discharge into small to medium-sized receiving waters, the discharge quality requirements are gradually being tightened under the influence of the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive. This currently very often affects the limit values for phosphate, but increasingly also the discharge temperatures. A distinction is often even made between summer and winter discharges in order to take account of the natural temperature fluctuations of surface waters. This poses major challenges for industrial dischargers, particularly in the winter months, as the wastewater has high temperatures throughout the year due to production processes. Implementation options: HUBER energy recovery from wastewater Ideally, the necessary cooling of wastewater is carried out in such a way that the extracted thermal energy can be recovered profitably and is not lost. Unfortunately, however, direct utilisation from the wastewater is rarely possible because the wastewater is rarely clean the temperature level is comparatively low With project-specific combinations of HUBER Heat Exchanger RoWin and a suitably designed heat pump, HUBER offers a wide range of possibilities to combine the reduction of discharge temperatures required for environmental protection with regenerative heat reuse. Depending on the existing temperatures in the wastewater, its volume and the target temperatures for discharge and internal reuse, different energy utilisation concepts can be realised. For example, in the future and already today, plant buildings can be heated (especially in winter), rinsing and washing water can be preheated, production processes can be heated, fermenters or the fermenter inlets can be preheated. In each case, the primary energy input for these processes is reduced. [...]Salzburg, Austria The wastewater treatment plant in Siggerwiesen in the municipality of Bergheim, which borders the city of Salzburg to the north, has been in operation since 1986 and treats approx. 40% of the total wastewater generated in the city and province of Salzburg. The first expansion of the sewage treatment plant took place between 1994 and 1998, followed by further adaptation measures between 2003 and 2004. With a capacity of 680,000 PE60 and a dry weather inflow of 103,600 m³ per day, the Siggerwiesen municipal sewage treatment plant is the largest in the province of Salzburg. The catchment area of the sewage board Reinhalteverband RHV Großraum Salzburg covers a total area of 185 km² in twelve member municipalities. The wastewater is channelled to the sewage treatment plant via 567 km of local networks and 143 km of collectors. The inflow volume from the sewer network with a 70% mixed system changes proportionally with the amount of precipitation over the course of the year. Four screen generations Circulation screens were installed when the wastewater treatment plant was built; the second generation (approx. 1995 to 2009) were step screens with a bar spacing of 5 mm. In 2009, perforated plate circulation screens with a diameter of 6 mm were installed (2009 to 2023). The fourth generation now consists of two HUBER ROTAMAT ® Ro2 2600 XL screens with 3 mm bar spacing, the largest screens in southern Germany/Austria. The general conditions: Maximum inflow per line 2000 l/s Two 3 m wide channels Channel depth 2.45 m Under discussion were revolving chain screens with 2.5 or 3 mm bar spacing or the HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT ® Ro2 2600 XL with 3 mm bar spacing. At first, the screen did not seem to be the machine of choice because it caused higher investment costs than a chain screen. However, performance data, calculations and their detailed comparison as well as international references caused the price to recede into the background as a criterion. Mechanical process engineering The main difference between the ROTAMAT ® screen and screening systems with a flat bar screen with rake or scraper bar is, on the one hand, the size of the area through which the screen flows and, on the other, the clearing speed. Compared to a rectangular bar rack with an installation angle of 55°, the flow area of the Ro2 screen is significantly increased. This is due to the flatter installation angle of 30 degrees of the screen and the cylindrical shape of the screen basket. In addition, the rotating drum offers a significantly higher speed for cleaning the screen surface compared to other screens. A third major advantage of the ROTAMAT ® screen is the way in which the screenings are removed. While chain screens with scraper bars set the screenings in motion, this is not the case with systems such as the previously installed perforated plate screen or the screens that are now installed. This is the reason for the high separation performance. In combination with the high clearing speed, this leads to a lower upstream head, less grit deposits in the channel and reduced operating hours. This can also be seen at the Siggerwiesen wastewater treatment plant. The operating hours there have been reduced by 60% since the screens were installed. Raw screenings volume The diagram below shows the amount of screenings produced by different types of wedge wire screens. It can be seen that, for example, with a bar spacing of 3 mm, rotating drum screens generate significantly more screenings than wedge wire screens with scraper bars, which push rollers of screenings over a bar rack, or step screens, which set the retained screenings below the waterline in motion over the entire surface. The high separation efficiency is also due to the fact that the direction in which the screenings are detached from the screen surface and discharged (from outside to inside) is opposite to the direction of wastewater flow (from inside to outside). As a result, fibres that are already hanging through the slotted screen behind the screening surface are conveyed by the cleaning system (water or air) back in front of the screening surface and thus back into the screenings removal process. Any solid matter that does not enter the wastewater treatment plant minimises clogging and increases operational safety. The operational and technical managers of the Salzburg wastewater treatment plant followed this idea. The previously installed perforated plate screens with a 6 mm hole diameter already had a very good separation performance as they also did not move the screenings on the screen surface. With the installation of HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT ® Ro2 units with 3 mm wedge wire, the monthly production of dewatered screenings increased further from 140 to 160 tonnes. Behaviour during flushing surge The cleaning speed of the drum screen makes the ROTAMAT ® Ro2 screen insensitive to changes in the load, e.g. in case of flushing surges during rain events or during the final phase of emptying stormwater retention basins. Wear and screen surface cleaning The ROTAMAT ® Ro2 screen has no chain joints, sprocket bearings, bar rack surfaces, scrapers, etc. that can wear out. There is no wear on the screening surface because the screened material is not moved on it. The machine has a single bearing point: the so-called "foot bearing", which supports the weight of the rotating parts of the worm shaft and screen drum. Screen surface cleaning Efficient screen surface cleaning on these two HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT ® Ro2 units is achieved by three screen surface cleaning systems: Water spray nozzle bar with a pressure of 5 bar effectively at the nozzles (standard, here as backup) Air jet cleaning for cleaning the screen without using water High-pressure cleaning with 120 bar working pressure for intensive basic cleaning after every 3 hours of operation Summary The two screens discharge washed and dewatered screenings into the two downstream spiral conveyors. A screw conveyor transports the screenings into the container room, where they are transported fully automatically from an existing distribution system into three large-capacity containers. The installation in Salzburg shows that the HUBER ROTAMAT ® Ro2 screen is superior to other screening systems when considering criteria such as separation performance, combined screenings treatment, service life, maintenance intervals, spare parts requirements, in short the lifecycle costs. The reliability of the ROTAMAT ® Ro2 screen must also be taken into account. Of the large ROTAMAT ® Ro2 screens in Austria, the plant in St. Jakob in Defereggen (East Tyrol), size 1500 with 3 mm gap width, is the oldest. [...]Mooresville, North Carolina, USA The ninth belt dryer project was sold in the USA in 2022. The USA has thus established itself as the second largest belt dryer market in the HUBER Group. There is no doubt that the foundation stone for this success was laid in the Mooresville belt dryer project in North Carolina: This year we are celebrating 10 years of operation of the plant in Mooresville. The BT 20 belt dryer (formerly known as BT 5-2) serves the wastewater treatment plant with a maximum capacity of 28,400 m3/d (7.5 MGD). Since its commissioning in 2013, this dryer has made a significant contribution to efficient waste management and the sustainable utilisation of resources. ”Town brown”, the brown gold of Mooresville The belt dryer is loaded with non-stabilised excess sludge from the sewage treatment plant. This is dewatered to 18% DR using a belt filter press. The dewatered sewage sludge is then dried to at least 90% solids content. This is passed on to local farmers for agricultural use. Among farmers in the region and in internal circles, the dried sewage sludge is also called ”town brown” – the ”brown from the town”, the "brown gold of Mooresville" – because of its colour and the place where it is dried. Heat is supplied to the plant by a hot water boiler fuelled by natural gas. The dryer is designed for a water evaporation rate of 1,300 kg/h and offers the well-known and widely appreciated advantages of the HUBER belt dryer design: Sludge extruder for optimum feeding onto the dryer belt Minimised dust production Temperature control in the individual dryer modules The tenth anniversary of the dryer operation was used as an opportunity to talk with the wastewater treatment plant manager, Jamie Levis, and the sludge treatment plant manager, Larry Hendren, about the operating experience and future plans. The lively exchange of information allowed a look behind the scenes of this historic project for HUBER. Over 75,000 operating hours in total In the course of this, the experience gained from 10 years of operation, during which more than 75,000 operating hours were accumulated, was discussed in great detail. It was noted that it naturally takes some time to optimise the operation of such a system. This applies to the maintenance of the system as well as the special operating conditions of the individual system components. It also requires a machine operator who, as in most cases, should enjoy familiarising themselves with the machine technology and the subject matter. Insights from the plant personnel The plant personnel start their day with a daily inspection of the plant. According to Larry Hendren, this involves paying particular attention to the noises made by the individual components, which could indicate any developing susceptibility to faults. Smooth operation can be easily guaranteed with an appropriate stock of spare parts and proactive monitoring and maintenance work. In combination with stocking individual components, downtimes can be minimised and an average availability of the system of over 8,000 h/a can be guaranteed. This is also manifested in the fact that the staff regard the operation of the dryer as a personal matter when interested visitors come to see the plant. But it is also reflected in the large number of references that the Mooresville plant has provided for HUBER. This includes responding to enquiries from planning offices, through to personal visits to the plant, including answering questions relating to operation, maintenance and costs. The positive feedback from colleagues at the Mooresville wastewater treatment plant, especially Jamie Levis and Larry Hendren, regarding the belt dryer is certainly a major reason why the story of belt dryers in the USA has become a success story. [...]Madrid-Butarque, Spain It is a successful large-scale project at the gates of the Spanish capital: HUBER successfully commissions 18 HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® units in the Madrid-Butarque stormwater retention basin. After ten years of less than satisfactory operation with products from other manufacturers, combined with high additional expenses, the City of Madrid renewed the facility in the south of the city with innovative and reliable products from HUBER. With a capacity of up to 400 million litres (400,000 m³), the stormwater retention basin is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Maximum throughput of 63 m³/s: new screening plant with 18 HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® units The new screening plant for the protection of the Butarque stormwater retention basin consists of 18 HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® units size 5120 x 1775 with a bar spacing of 40 mm for a maximum water throughput of 63 m³/s. The screenings are discharged via a conveyor belt system. HUBER Technology España, the Spanish subsidiary of HUBER, developed a customised solution to ensure reliable and smooth operation under real conditions. After being contacted by the City of Madrid in 2019, HUBER convinced with its tailor-made solution – through detailed and specific knowledge of the wastewater situation in Spain and specifically in the Madrid metropolitan area, coupled with significant practical experience from ongoing projects. First project phase from December 2020 to April 2021: successful commissioning of the first nine HUBER RakeMax® As the inflow into the stormwater basin could not be interrupted and the continuous availability of the system had to be ensured, the project was carried out in two phases. In phase I, the necessary adaptation of the concrete works to the new equipment was carried out from December 2020 to February 2021. The installation of the first nine HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® units, including the electrical installation, was successfully carried out in March 2021 and the commissioning of the first project phase was completed at the beginning of April 2021. Outstanding performance of the HUBER machines: customer's expectations fully met Shortly after commissioning, the newly installed products had to master the first test: with the onset of spring rains, the first floods hit the stormwater retention basin, filling the screenings containers with several cubic metres of screenings within a few minutes. The performance of the new HUBER plant proved to be excellent and fully met the customer's expectations. Second project phase from July to November 2021: full upgrade and commissioning The second project phase was carried out between July and November 2021. By the end of 2021, the Butarque stormwater retention basin was fully upgraded and commissioned with the new HUBER RakeMax® screens. With this major project, HUBER has once again proven to be a very reliable partner for its customers. City of Madrid had invested 90 million euros for new stormwater retention basin As part of the infrastructure plan to improve the quality of the Manzanares, the approximately 90 km long river running through the Spanish capital, the city of Madrid had carried out the construction of one of the largest rainwater retention basins in Europe from 2005 to 2010. The city invested about 90 million euros in the construction. In total, more than 2.5 million m³ of earth was moved and over 90,000 m³ of concrete was used. Pollution and negative environmental impacts minimised, quality of river and ecosystem guaranteed Thanks to this measure, Madrid was equipped with a management and storage system (total capacity: 1.3 million m³) that prevents the direct discharge into the Manzanares of the large volumes of rainwater collected by the sewer network. This made it possible to stop the pollution of this water body, minimise negative environmental impacts and guarantee the quality of the river and its entire aquatic ecosystem. Installed products from other companies had to be replaced The originally proposed and installed solution for the inlet works comprised ten individual grab screens, and a flume channel had been built for the transport and removal of the screenings. However, already during the first storm event it became apparent that the installed equipment, screens and flume channels were not capable of handling the very large amounts of wastewater and screenings that entered the inlet structure of the stormwater basin. The inefficient and unsuitable cleaning system of these screens led to severe clogging of the bars, making it difficult to fill the rainwater basin. In addition, the operations staff had great difficulty in preventing the site from flooding and had to spend many hours manually cleaning the screens and the entire construction site after each rain event. After almost ten years of operation: HUBER delivers innovative and reliable products After almost ten years of operation under these inadequate conditions, which caused high effort and costs especially for operation and maintenance, the authorities planned to replace the mechanical equipment. In 2019, HUBER Technology España had been contacted and the current situation on site had been discussed by the responsible consultants, operators and owners. The successful implementation of such projects once again clearly showed how important it is to work with partners who not only have a great deal of experience, but above all detailed knowledge of the local conditions and processes.
