[...]By generating electricity and heat from digester gas, operators of wastewater treatment plants with anaerobic sludge stabilisation can generate energy themselves, and thus significantly reduce the purchase of external energy and consistently and sustainably lower their operating costs. Under suitable conditions, by feeding external and organic-rich waste (co-substrates) into the digester, gas and thus energy production can even be increased to the point of energy self-sufficiency. Typically, liquid waste from the food industry or catering (such as grease separator contents or flotate sludge) is delivered, processed and fed into the digester. Sustainably improving digestion processes and gas production In order to sustainably improve the digestion process or gas production through co-substrates, as well as to protect mixing and conveying units and the downstream sludge dewatering system, foreign materials contained in the substrate must be removed and coarse solids must be broken up. Typical materials and coarse solids are: Fibrous materials, textiles Stones, metals Plastics Possible effects of insufficient removal of impurities are: Wear on pumps and dewatering units Blockages in pipeline installations Blockages, floating ceilings and deposits in the fermenter Reduced or unstable gas yields Restrictions in the treatment of filtrate water and digested sludge Proven for over 20 years: the HUBER Sludgecleaner STRAINPRESS® For the removal of contaminants from sludge, the HUBER Sludgecleaner STRAINPRESS® has proven its worth for more than 20 years. The STRAINPRESS® is a horizontal cylindrical screen for continuous separation and dewatering of foreign matter. It is divided into an inlet and screening zone plus a compaction and discharge zone. A pump conveys the unscreened sludge through the screening zone and presses the screened sludge for further treatment. The coarse material retained on the cylindrical screen is stripped off by a coaxial screw and pushed through the compaction zone where the material is pressed and dewatered. The screw operates only when the pressure sensors detect a differential pressure caused by screen surface blinding. The foreign matter is pushed through a gap around a hydraulically actuated jam cone, which partially closes the end of the tube and builds up counterpressure. The counterpressure of the cone is automatically regulated inversely proportional to the load of the screw drive. Individual adaptation for throughputs from 5 to 150 m³/h raw sludge Proven options such as screen perforation sizes between 2 mm and 10 mm as well as individual designs of the compaction zones allow the machine to be adapted to different properties of the raw sludge and the screenings. Experience has shown that the HUBER coarse material separator can achieve specific separation capacities of 1 to 10 kg screenings per m³ raw sludge (dewatered to approx. 40%). Due to pump feeding and the closed screening process, even non-hygienised sludges and substrates can be treated without health hazards for the operating personnel. Complete removal of coarse material for significantly increased operational safety Often alternatively used macerators only macerate coarse material – inert and abrasive contaminants as well as fibres, however, remain in the substrate and can cause the negative effects mentioned above. [...]Bayreuth, Germany and Lomianki, Poland HUBER solar sludge drying system with sludge feeding and removal on the same gable end – the feed comes back as dry sludge HUBER SE has continued the success story of its solar sludge drying system in 2014. Like on many other sites, whether in Europe or overseas, the SRT system convinced also the customer at Bayreuth in Bavaria and was the winner of the tender competition. The decisive point in favour of the HUBER SRT was that its concept ensured clever use of the scarce space on site. Feeding of the press/wet sludge and removal of the dry granulate takes place on the same gable end of the greenhouse. This allows to realize a sludge treatment solution with compact installation of all plant equipment in one place. Such a solution also minimises space demand and soil sealing. Furthermore, it is not necessary to build roads and turning round areas. The SRT system with its 'one-way-road' design is also the winner of the tender for the project Lomianki in Poland near Warsaw. This project comprises of two SRT 11 drying lines on an area of approx. 2,000 m², while five drying lines of size SRT 11 are installed at Bayreuth on an area of nearly 7,000 m². Already several years ago HUBER SE successfully tested sludge feeding and removal at the same gable end with the SRT sludge turner. The concept was for the first time implemented in 2008, on STW Marktbergel. The double-shovel sludge turner transports the sludge through the greenhouse while the sludge is drying. Pasty, biologically active press cake becomes a stable grainy product. The fully automatic climate control system developed by HUBER ensures the optimal use of solar energy and maximises water evaporation. The dry material is generated on the greenhouse end opposite to where the wet sludge is fed. Due to its special design the HUBER SRT sludge turner is able to take the dry sludge into one of its two shovels and transport it back. The shovels are mounted on a special stainless steel half shell, the so-called 'half-pipe'. The dry grainy product is transported back inside the shovel in a 'piggypack' manner. At Lomianki the dry sludge, the volume of which has been reduced to a minimum by drying, falls into a storage bunker from where it can be loaded onto a truck, whereby the 'storage bunker' is actually just a height difference in the drying surface. On the site in Bayreuth the dry material falls into a screw shaft and is removed automatically. Also material discharge is automated. Truck loading times can be minimised to 30 minutes. We are sure the success of the SRT will continue also in 2015. On the basis of the DWA sheet A 102 (an instruction issued by an association dealing with wastewater treatment) efforts to fundamentally improve the protection of waters in this sector have been increased. Particularly endangered receiving water courses and nature preservation areas require more extensive measures concerning the treatment of stormwater. Design and Function The ROTAMAT® RoK1 screen is the ideal solution for solids retention at stormwater discharges, whether for new structures or refurbishment. The screen belongs to a group of fine screens designed for high flow rates at an extremely low hydraulic resistance. Two-dimensional screening guarantees a very high solids retention combined with automatic, gentle cleaning of the perforated plate. RoK1 screens are horizontally installed at the down-stream side of overflow weirs. A screw flight is mounted on a half cylinder of perforated plate. As the stormwater flows through the horizontal perforated half-pipe of the screen trough the solids are retained. A screw, with a brush attached on its flights, rotates within the semi-circular screen trough. It cleans the screen and pushes the screenings gently towards the end of the trough. At the end of the trough, the screenings are returned into the sewer and carried to the wastewater treatment plant. Alternatively, the screenings are removed from the plant with a cross conveyor for further disposal. During storm conditions the screen is automatically started and then works fully automatically. The installation conditions On the left or right side of the weir overflow – standard inclination angles 0° and 60°. To allow far different structural conditions and local hydraulic conditions it is necessary that the screen can be flexibly installed into existing buildings. The full screen surface is available already at the beginning of a storm event so that the hydraulic resistance is minimized with the result of a very high solids retention. The Applications HUBER ROTAMAT® Screens RoK1 can be used for a variety of applications in the combined sewage sector. To avoid another point of maintenance it is generally not intended to remove screenings from the structure. Instead, the screenings remain within the sewer or tank and are introduced into the wastewater treatment plant after the storm event. [...]Penrith, UK Originally, the two existing perforated plate (escalator-type) screens at the Penrith wastewater treatment plant discharged their screenings into a launder trough wherefrom they were flushed to a tank incorporating macerator pumps. These pumps grinded the solids and returned them back to the works. Besides the fact that the entire system did only comminute the screenings, but did not remove any solids, the system did not operate reliably. The main problems encountered by the operators were that the macerator pumps required constant maintenance and that, under certain circumstances, the macerator tank overflowed and raw sewage littered the site. In order to clean up the process and avoid the problems associated with the existing set-up, United Utilities contacted HUBER to come up with a solution. We submitted a proposal that incorporated the HUBER super-lauder wash-press WAP® SL. The customer approved our solution because the WAP® SL removes the screenings in a well-washed and highly compacted form, and because of its high screenings processing capacity. As a certain amount of civil engineering work was required to accommodate the WAP® SL unit, United Utilities enlisted the help of Mackereth Engineering as a local contractor. Because this contractor has been familiar with HUBER products for a number of years, they were also ordered to provide the required mechanical installation. Supply of the control panel and associated cabling and electrical installations were undertaken by Bainbridge Electrical, another local contractor. In cooperation with United Utilities and the local contractors, we were able to address the issues of skip/lorry and personnel access as well as optimising maintenance and operation procedures. The new system operates as follows: Operation of the existing screens remains unchanged, The screens discharge their screenings into a launder channel and the screens’ wash water is used to flush the screenings through the channel into the launder tank of a WAP/SL unit, Under normal circumstances, a drain valve located at the bottom of the launder tank remains closed to allow the water level in the tank to rise, The level in the tank is monitored with a pressure sensor until it reaches a pre-set limit, Upon reaching the limit, an impeller that is mounted on the tank’s wall is switched on and turning for a pre-set duration. The impeller generates high turbulence and launders the screenings, When the impeller is switched off, the drain valve opens and wash water drains through perforations in the bottom, while the washed screenings are retained on the bottom, Simultaneously a motor driving an auger above the tank’s bottom is switched on. The auger screw drives the washed screenings into a compaction zone, All filtrate from the WAP® SL unit is discharged into a small sump and, in this instance, pumped back to the head of the works, The screenings are compressed, dewatered and compacted while they are forced by the auger through an inclined pressure pipe. At the end of the pipe they drop into a skip, Under these conditions and up to a feeding rate of 2.5 m³/h, the WAP® SL produces a very clean, dry and virtually odourless screenings product, Should the screenings load exceed this value, the WAP® SL changes automatically to a different mode of operation, allowing a maximum of 4 m³/h of screenings to be processed with only a slight deterioration of the end product’s quality. The operational versatility, as described in item 11 above, enables HUBER to offer a unit with a very small footprint for a relatively high solids throughput.[...]
