[...]Kaditz, Germany Hot and greasy – sludge screening with the STRAINPRESS® On the way from a sewage treatment works to an energy park – Stadtentwässerung Dresden undertake a variety of measures on STP Kaditz to achieve this goal. One of these measures is the acceptance and treatment of foreign material for co-fermentation in the digesters. They want to use the energy-rich grease sludge to increase the gas production in the two 10,500 m³ digesters and thus achieve a significantly higher energy production in the two block heat and power plants. The grease separator contents delivered by tanker vehicles are passed through a stone trap before they arrive in the buffer tanks where the grease sludge is mixed with the scum from the sewage treatment plant and heated to 50 °C with exhaust heat from the block heat and power plant. Before the energy-rich grease sludge can be pumped into the digester, non-fermentable foreign materials must however be removed. Such materials, for example films, parts of packing material, cutlery or waste tableware, would otherwise lead to expensive maintenance work on digester equipment, heat exchangers, pumps or the downstream sludge dewatering system. STP Dresden-Kaditz has used HUBER STRAINPRESS® machines to screen the primary sludge since 2008 already. STRAINPRESS® units allow for sludge screening directly in the pressure pipeline – with integrated screenings dewatering. This system has proven its capability on STP Dresden-Kaditz for many years already. Two other advantages of the STRAINPRESS® play an important role when screening grease separator contents: The STRAINPRESS® can also be used with hot media flows. As the cylindrical machine is covered with an insulation, the operating staff is not faced with the problem of hot surfaces. Due to the completely enclosed design of the machine there is no uncontrolled spreading of potentially explosive atmospheres or nasty odours inside the operational building. These can be removed by suction in the subsequent intermediate tank. From this intermediate tank the screened grease sludge is pumped into the digesters. As the grease sludge that is delivered to site comes from various different sources, the type and concentration of the sludge in the individual tanker vehicles can differ greatly. The sludge screening system reacts automatically and adjusts the frequency of screen surface cleaning and the dewatering pressure to suit the varying sludge and screenings qualities. This automatic adjustment ensures constant screening results and a stable screenings dewatering degree even with grease sludges of varying properties. The plant for processing external sludge on STP Dresden-Kaditz was put into operation in summer 2012. Two STRAINPRESS® sludge screening units have since treated the hot grease sludge very reliably. About 500 t external sludge are received each month in the two sludge acceptance lines. The amount of screenings separated by the STRAINPRESS® units lies between 15 and 25 t. With the acceptance of external grease sludge the generated electricity from the block heat and power plant could be increased to beyond the expected result. [...]Bayreuth, Germany and Lomianki, Poland HUBER solar sludge drying system with sludge feeding and removal on the same gable end – the feed comes back as dry sludge HUBER SE has continued the success story of its solar sludge drying system in 2014. Like on many other sites, whether in Europe or overseas, the SRT system convinced also the customer at Bayreuth in Bavaria and was the winner of the tender competition. The decisive point in favour of the HUBER SRT was that its concept ensured clever use of the scarce space on site. Feeding of the press/wet sludge and removal of the dry granulate takes place on the same gable end of the greenhouse. This allows to realize a sludge treatment solution with compact installation of all plant equipment in one place. Such a solution also minimises space demand and soil sealing. Furthermore, it is not necessary to build roads and turning round areas. The SRT system with its 'one-way-road' design is also the winner of the tender for the project Lomianki in Poland near Warsaw. This project comprises of two SRT 11 drying lines on an area of approx. 2,000 m², while five drying lines of size SRT 11 are installed at Bayreuth on an area of nearly 7,000 m². Already several years ago HUBER SE successfully tested sludge feeding and removal at the same gable end with the SRT sludge turner. The concept was for the first time implemented in 2008, on STW Marktbergel. The double-shovel sludge turner transports the sludge through the greenhouse while the sludge is drying. Pasty, biologically active press cake becomes a stable grainy product. The fully automatic climate control system developed by HUBER ensures the optimal use of solar energy and maximises water evaporation. The dry material is generated on the greenhouse end opposite to where the wet sludge is fed. Due to its special design the HUBER SRT sludge turner is able to take the dry sludge into one of its two shovels and transport it back. The shovels are mounted on a special stainless steel half shell, the so-called 'half-pipe'. The dry grainy product is transported back inside the shovel in a 'piggypack' manner. At Lomianki the dry sludge, the volume of which has been reduced to a minimum by drying, falls into a storage bunker from where it can be loaded onto a truck, whereby the 'storage bunker' is actually just a height difference in the drying surface. On the site in Bayreuth the dry material falls into a screw shaft and is removed automatically. Also material discharge is automated. Truck loading times can be minimised to 30 minutes. We are sure the success of the SRT will continue also in 2015. [...]Nova Gorica, Slovenia HUBER received the first order for a Belt Dryer BT installation in Slovenia. Besides a number of other HUBER products, the BT 8 will be installed on the sewage treatment plant of the town Nova Gorica in western Slovenia, not far from the Italian border. The dryer is designed for an annual throughput of 9,300 t dewatered sewage sludge. In summer 2014, HUBER received the order to supply the complete equipment for mechanical wastewater treatment and sludge treatment. The mechanical equipment comprises two coarse screens type HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax®, two fine screens type HUBER Fine Screen STEP SCREEN® SSF-HE with 6 mm bar spacing and three fine screens type HUBER Perforated Plate Screen ROTAMAT® STAR 1800 with 1 mm perforation. When planning the three-stage preliminary treatment system, which is to protect the downstream membrane filtration plant, the end customer relied on HUBER's positive long-term experience in the Slovenian market. Two HUBER Sludge Acceptance Plant ROTAMAT® Ro3.1 units, one HUBER Screenings Wash Press WAP® 4 and one HUBER Coanda Grit Washer RoSF4 complete the range of HUBER products installed in this complex plant. The sludge treatment plant is equipped with two HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® 800 units for sludge dewatering and a HUBER Belt Dryer BT 8. Both plant components ensure that the sludge from the membrane biology is first dewatered to about 20 % and then dried to > 90 % DR. The BT 8 belt dryer is operated with a flow temperature of 140 °C. The dryer thus achieves a water evaporation of just over a ton per hour on a comparatively small drying surface. The electric power that is necessary for drying is only 57 kW per kg water evaporation. This extremely low value is achieved through the dryer's unique HELIX air-flow routing system which ensures that maximum air saturation is achieved and minimizes the volume of air required for drying. This has a very positive effect on power demand as the ventilators are the major power consumers in a drying plant. Furthermore, the BT dryer is equipped with a heat recovery system which recovers the heat that is released as the vapours condensate and makes it available to be utilized for heating purposes on the sewage treatment plant. The useful heat energy generated from condensation amounts to up to 450 kW. This reduces operating costs and helps reduce CO 2 emissions. [...]Ingolstadt, Germany Two HUBER belt dryers BT were put into operation on STP Ingolstadt in August 2005. The installed total dryer surface is 160 m² which is the same as that of our new dryer type BT 16. The scope of supply of HUBER SE included not only the drying plants but also the sludge bunkers and thick sludge pumps. The exhaust air treatment system has already been installed. Figure 2 shows the complete plant. The special feature of sewage sludge drying on STP Ingolstadt is that the drying process takes place on a very low temperature level. Warm water with a temperature of 53 °C is available as heat carrier medium. This warm water is heated in the adjacent waste incineration plant via a water-vapour heat exchanger. The exhaust steam from a condensation turbine is available all year round. As this hot water is free for the sewage treatment plant, their operating costs for sewage sludge drying are very low. The dry sewage sludge, which is dried to 90% DS, is thermally utilised in the waste incineration plant, this closes the loop. 294,000 driving kilometres saved per year 88,000 litres of diesel saved per year CO 2 emissions reduced by 225,000 kg per year No use of primary energy Utilisation of secondary energy in the form of cost-free exhaust heat from the waste incineration plant Use of current that has been generated from regenerative sources on the waste incineration plant Most maintenance work (e.g. cleaning the pelletising system) can normally be carried out without having to interrupt plant operation. There are hardly any standstill times, most of the time the dryers operate seven days a week. The sludge drying plants therefore achieve an average annual operation time of significantly more than 8,000 h. The technical plant manager is especially enthusiastic about the low maintenance requirements. [...]Braunschweig, Germany The "baby" solar dryer is back In 2012, HUBER SE manufactured a mobile solar dryer in a container for Expoval Sludge, a research project supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The dryer was extensively tested in cooperation with the Institute for Sanitary Engineering of the Technical University of Braunschweig in Germany, in Poland and in Colombia. The results achieved with the dryer were summed up in a DWA work sheet on solar sludge drying. The baby solar dryer was recently taken out of the research project and overhauled. In autumn this year, it will be shipped to South America where it will be used for drying tests on several municipal and industrial sewage treatment plants. This should have a sales-promotional effect on the sales of HUBER solar dryers. On the trail of odours As part of the master's theses of two students from the Technical University Amberg-Weiden a laboratory cabinet dryer was modified and tested for exhaust air measurements. The aim of the students' theses is to enable predictions to be made on odour-carrying substances in the exhaust air from the solar dryer. For this purpose, the temperature range was altered from 30 to 70 °C and also the pH value and the return rate for the dry material were modified. Then, the effects on the ammoniac content in the exhaust air were measured. It turned out that the ammoniac content in the exhaust air is reduced if dry material is mixed into the dewatered sludge as it is the case with the HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE®. The reduced ammoniac content leads to a significant reduction of ammoniac emissions. On the other hand, it appears that the ammoniac load in the dryer exhaust air increases as the temperate rises, as it is the case in warmer regions or in case of additional utilisation of exhaust air in the solar dryer (floor heating or hot air). The measurements on the large-scale sewage sludge drying plant at Bayreuth are to be used to compare the laboratory data with the real data gained from practical experience. The decision whether or not an exhaust air treatment is required for the solar dryer has a significant influence on the investment and operating costs of the solar sewage sludge drying plant.[...]
[...]Isle of Man, Great Britain The first HUBER Belt Dryer BT installation in Great Britain went officially into operation recently. On the Isle of Man, up to 12,775 t sewage sludge per year will efficiently be dried from now on. HUBER received the order to build a belt dryer on the Isle of Man at the beginning of 2015. The customer wanted to reduce the energy expenditure for sludge drying and the resulting high disposal costs. The HUBER BT 16 achieves this most impressively. The sewage treatment plant of the town Douglas does not have any sludge digestion facilities. There is therefore no exhaust air available for operating the dryer, and only a limited amount of gas and fuel oil is available and hence expensive. The contractor decided therefore to use a highly-efficient, electrically heated boiler for heat supply to the dryer. As the site is located very close to the sea (approx. 300 m), all components of the dryer had to be manufactured from V4A material, not only the dryer segments but also the complete outer shell and the insulation of the air and heating lines. For the cooling water supply for vapour condensation even titanium is used in this case because of the extremely high chloride contents of more than 1,000 mg/l. After a construction time of about one year the belt dryer went into operation in June 2016. The HUBER Belt Dryer BT could be put into regular operation after only a very short start-up period. This project shows how flexible and adaptable the HUBER Belt Dryer BT can be. The dryer easily copes with even the most difficult local conditions of a site on an island and offers the customer an efficient, robust solution to reduce operating costs. [...]Mannheim, Germany Do you have a wastewater treatment plant of manageable size with few machines? Do you use not only HUBER machinery but also systems from other manufacturers? Or do you operate a large wastewater treatment plant with dozens of machines? All this is irrelevant when concluding a HUBER service and maintenance contract, because HUBER offers the optimal solution for every requirement. One of the major projects of the more than 1,100 existing HUBER service and maintenance contracts is Eigenbetrieb Stadtentwässerung (EBS) Mannheim with its sewage treatment plant, which has been a loyal maintenance contract customer for years. With meanwhile almost 20 HUBER products – ranging from simple conveying technology, machines for mechanical wastewater treatment, grit preparation processes up to highly complex belt dryers – almost everything is included in this HUBER service and maintenance contract. The reasons for concluding a HUBER service and maintenance contract Mr. Gremm, foreman in charge of the machinery and equipment on the Mannheim wastewater treatment plant, told HUBER in an interview why he and his team with the many machines they have in operation trust in the HUBER service and maintenance contract – and have done so for many years. For Stadtentwässerung Mannheim, the decisive reasons for concluding a HUBER service and maintenance contract were, apart from maintaining optimum functionality and extending the durability of the equipment, the constant exchange of information as well as the know-how transfer between the highly qualified HUBER technical staff and the employees of the sewage treatment plant. The training of the own staff and the release of their potential were also important criteria. Another important consideration was the extension of the warranty from two to four years in accordance with the German Construction Contract Procedures (VOB/B), according to the staff of the Mannheim sewage treatment plant. In principle, the statutory limitation period is two years. Only by concluding a HUBER service and maintenance contract can this warranty period be extended from two to four years, which is an immense advantage for HUBER customers – they receive this exclusively from the manufacturer. Highest operational reliability and consistently high machine performance ”The machine technology covered by the HUBER Service and Maintenance Contract is part of the most critical process steps in wastewater treatment. The failure of one of these plant components in extreme weather conditions can affect the operational safety of our complete plant,” says Mr. Gremm. With a HUBER service and maintenance contract, the machinery and equipment are inspected annually according to the detailed HUBER checklist. This minimises failure risks and downtimes and ensures the highest possible operational safety. Due to a wide variety of factors, such as long running times and high loads on the machines or abrasive substances, some customers rely on a six-monthly maintenance interval, including the Mannheim sewage treatment plant. [...]Freystadt, Germany For almost two decades, the municipality of Freystadt and HUBER SE have maintained a good business relationship: several HUBER machines are in operation at the town’s wastewater treatment plant and, since 2018, a HUBER service and maintenance contract for the sludge treatment machines has also been in place. The service contract was ordered in 2018 together with the delivery of new machines and now regularly expired in mid-2022 after the warranty extension from 2 to 4 years, which is always possible with a maintenance contract. We are particularly pleased that we can continue our service partnership after this period and that a HUBER service and maintenance contract has been concluded again. On the HUBER premises in Erasbach, various technical equipment is available to the factory repair team, enabling fast and economically viable repairs as well as general overhauls of machines. Thanks to the large capacity of technical prerequisites, the HUBER factory repair team can also fully take over the organisation of all machines if required. The approximately 2,000 m² hall offers the factory repair team enough space to disassemble and then reassemble the machines.
