Huber is the managing director of Hans Huber AG, Berching and winner of the German Environmental Award 2006. The technical university of Munich honours an entrepreneur who, as an engineer and scientist, has rendered outstanding services to technical environmental protection, as appreciated in the laudation. As one of the first entrepreneurs in Germany, Hans G. Huber recognized the global aspect of the water and wastewater issue. Wastewater is value material – On the basis of this principle Huber has developed numerous innovations and offered them as tailor-made technical solutions. His solutions for Europe are based upon state-of-the-art high technology, while sturdy design is the characteristic feature of the fresh water and wastewater treatment systems developed for and marketed in developing and emerging countries. Hans Huber’s vita reflects the both successful and responsibility demanding combination of scientific creativity with technical know-how and entrepreneurial foresight. [...]Cardston, UK The City of Cardston’s Wastewater Treatment Plant is aging yet still performs well in providing the services that its population needs. The close knit community has had some issues with odors from the WWTP but it is a trade-off for free fertilizer the plant provides to local barley farmers. One of the ways that Cardston has maintained WWTP performance is by employing leading technology within the wastewater treatment process. What the citizens of Cardston didn’t know was that when the WWTP chose to install HUBER’s Screw Press Q-PRESS®, it would not only improve performance, but it would also change the plant’s role in the community. Water and Wastewater Utilities Foreman, Bart Atwood, had researched liquid separation solutions and formulated these goals for implementing new press technology: Upgrade to current technology Improve the quality of end-products (water and biosolids) Reduce odors that caused community complaints Reduce costs associated with separation/pressing Increase efficiency for operators Challenge: Atwood’s existing belt press represents the old approach to liquid separation. There are new approaches to this process that include the screw press and centrifuge. Atwood’s research led him to the conclusion that the screw press type of solution would best help him meet his goals. After visiting several installations of HUBER’s Q-PRESS® – and observing its simple yet effective operation firsthand – Atwood made the decision to bring the HUBER technology into the Cardston plant. Solution: Atwood and his team immediately noticed the small footprint of the Q-Press. The new screw press took up less than half the space that the old belt press had occupied. This was striking for the operations team but not as striking as the fraction of time they needed to spend managing the screw press. While the belt press needed constant attention, the screw press required nothing past being turned on and off. It seemed to Atwood that he had gotten an additional team member because one of his operators was freed from the duty of tending the belt press. There was another notable difference with the new technology: No odor. “This is as odorless as this type of process could possibly be. Unlike with the belt press, I wouldn’t be afraid to stick my nose down and sniff the water or the biosolids going through our screw press,” says Atwood of his odor-free operation. The screw press more effectively separates the water from the biosolids – practically creating a dry solid end-product. The resulting water is cleaner than the water that comes into the headworks and produces no gaseous odor as it is fed back into the channel as the water does in the belt press process. This was critical for Atwood in fulfilling his goal of improving the plant’s impact on the community. The premiere piece of equipment in the plant Q-PRESS® performs so efficiently that is has become the star of the show for Atwood’s team. According to Atwood, “The screw press also demands less from our transportation resources. There is less bio solid to take to haul away. Since we store our bi solids for 2 years prior to using them for land application as fertilizer, the screw press also helps us reduce our costs to store our biosolids.” The cost savings alone could earn it notoriety. After all, the savings impact man hours, transportation, storages and resources. It saves Atwood’s team time because it requires no operational management. It saves in trucking costs, spreading costs and storage costs because the biosolids are dryer and easier to handle. Prior to the Q-PRESS®, Atwood’s trucks ran two times a day. After implementing Q-PRESS® this schedule was reduced to two times per week. It helps Cardston conserve water and electricity by requiring less of each to operate. The automation bonus The automation built into the Q-PRESS® gives Atwood’s team freedom. They are able to control shutdown and startup by just logging in. So issues that would have previously brought them into the plant from home during the night can be stopped remotely and addressed by the morning shift without impact to performance, maintenance or daily flow. [...]Star, Idaho, USA The Star Water and Sewer District knew change was going to come. The plant’s existing in-channel grinder technology wasn’t just aging, it was obsolete. The unit was also in need of repairs that could force two weeks of downtime. Regardless of what they did to “fix” the existing unit, its performance would lag behind newer screening technology. Consultants and engineers pointed the district to HUBER and its ROTAMAT® STAR fine screen as a replacement that would take the plant into the future. The single-most important result that Star Sewer and Water District Waste Water Treatment Plant Operator Ken Vose was hoping for from the HUBER unit was preventing harmful screenings from reaching the plant’s membrane bioreactor. “We need to make the flow entering the membrane bioreactor as clean as possible. Keeping the Muffin Monster didn’t make sense – even if it was repaired to its performance potential.” Ken Vose, Plant Operator Protect downstream components The Plant’s membrane bioreactor is an important unit. It is a premier solution for cleaning wastewater but its excellence comes at a cost. The membranes in the bioreactor can be easily damaged by solids in the flow. Yes - it was producing lots of screenings but we had to shut down and pressure wash the unit every 14-21 days. The competition took place during IFAT 2014 on the trade fair grounds in Munich. HUBER Technology Service competed as an industrial enterprise against the professionals from seven European sewage treatment works. The participants in the competition had to master demanding challenges in the field of measuring & control technology as well as complete sewage treatment works control with process technology. Moreover, they had to complete the tasks within a strict time limit. Our Service team showed high competence, worked systematically and with concentration, going for the win right from the beginning: Congratulation to Markus Schober, Martin Wild und Sebastian Jürgens, who have impressively proven and demonstrated to the public the superior competence of HUBER Service in direct competition with professionals from very renowned and large national and international sewage treatment plants! [...]Tula Valley of Hidalgo, Mexico The largest sewage treatment plant under construction in the world lies in the Mexican Tula Valley of Hidalgo. WWTP Atotonilco is situated about 60 km from the Mexican capital Mexico City and will treat 60 % of the wastewater generated by the city’s 20 mi HUBER SE will supply the complete equipment for the mechanical pre-treatment stage and in this way contribute significantly to the future improvement of the country’s water shortage problems. In the future, the wastewater in the inlet area will be pre-treated by ten HUBER RakeMax® Multi-Rake Bar Screens for the removal of coarse material, 20 STEP SCREEN® Vertical SSV for the removal of fine material combined with a launder channel system with integrated screenings treatment system. Another eight COANDA Grit Washer RoSF 4 units will be used for the removal and treatment of grit, and six STEP SCREEN® Flexible SSF units will be installed to screen the return sludge. WWTP Atotonilco is designed for the maximum flow of up to 50 m³ per second and will treat the wastewater of more than 12 million people. Right from the beginning, great importance was attached to the sustainability aspect in this project, which is co-financed by the Mexican government. The generated biogas will be used for energy recovery, the treated wastewater for the irrigation of 80,000 hectares of land. In the state of Hidalgo, most of the food for the inhabitants of Mexico City is grown. Up to now, untreated wastewater has been used to irrigate this agricultural land and increasingly caused hygiene and health problems. The overall project, a role model for the whole world, has a total value of € 500 million and will provide 2,000 new jobs in Mexico. By 2020, the Mexican government wants to guarantee a 100 % treatment of the complete wastewater generated in Mexico City and therefore has another five projects in the planning stage. Already in the tender phase the consortium of operators, Aguas Tratadas del Valle de Mexico (ATVM), attached great importance to the functionality of the complete solution, its economic efficiency as regards operating costs, and on the investment costs of the proposals submitted by the suppliers. In cooperation with our subsidiary in Chile and our representation Aguas Latinas in Mexico, we have developed a solution that stood out from those of our competitors as regards operating costs, involvement of specific local requirements, investment costs and product quality. Plant operation by the consortium has been fixed to 22 years. The first stage is planned to be completed and put into operation in the second quarter of 2012. [...]Waßmannsdorf-Berlin, Germany About 3.4 million people live in Germany's capital Berlin presently. Together with the local industries they produce a daily amount of about 600,000 m3 of wastewater under dry weather conditions. The generated wastewater is clarified on six sewage treatment plants, one in the city centre and five large works distributed around the city. These sewage treatment plants discharge their wastewater into a receiving water course each. STP Waßmannsdorf lies in the southern part of the city within intermediate proximity to the new Berlin-Brandenburg airport. With a clarification capacity of 230,000 m³ wastewater per day (under dry weather conditions) it is designed for 1,300,000 PE. The entire amount of the city's wastewater is collected in main pumping stations via collecting lines and from there pumped to the sewage treatment works. On STP Waßmannsdorf the wastewater is fed into the screen building via two huge vertical pressure pipelines and distributed to four treatment lines. As the existing old screening system on site had shown its age and screens had to meet ever increasing requirements due to changing screenings composition, the plant operators decided to replace all machines in the screen building with new ones. In addition, the separation efficiency of the existing 8 mm perforated plate screen seemed to have become insufficient. That is why they decided during the planning phase to install a two-stage screening plant consisting of a multi-rake bar screen with 20 mm bar spacing as course screen and a 6 mm perforated fine screen. Due to the given conditions and scarce space in the building it was no easy task for the planning office PWU in Magdeburg to plan this project in detail in cooperation with Berliner Wasserbetriebe and put it out to tender. Highest attention was paid to two requirements: robust screens and flexibility of the manufacturer. Some of the requirements in the tender specification were very high and bidders had to submit a calculation together with their bid to prove they can meet these requirements. It had to be verified whether the supplier is able to manufacture products that can be tailored to suit specific project requirements. Not least due to the fact that we had already supplied four RoSF 4 Grit Washer units (size 16 l/s) in 2011/2012 via ATM Hartmann (Berlin), we finally received the order in autumn 2013 to supply one coarse, one fine screen and one screenings wash press for treatment line 1. In view of the site conditions the order was initially limited to one line. Placement of the order for the other lines was subject to trouble-free operation of the first-line screens during an eight-week test period under predefined load conditions. After mechanical installation of the complete plant at the end of 2013 and completed electrical installation the plant was put into operation in spring 2014. Despite a number of interfaces plant start-up went off without any problems so that the new screening system could be put into test operation after a very short time already. During this test period all mechanical equipment operated without troubles even during several heavy rainfalls with extremely high pollution loads. Throughout the whole period only one problem report was received from the coarse screen, this was caused by a big squared timber due to which the screen was reliably stopped by the integrated mechanical safety shutdown function (torque control) to protect it against damage. At the end of the test period it had to be proven that the screens can cope with the defined load conditions. The screens had to reliably manage water level differentials of up to 2 m with enormous amounts of screenings (90 kg per minute) upstream of the screens. It turned out during the test period already that such conditions were not at all exaggerated requirements on the part of the customer but real scenarios as they occur regularly on STP Waßmannsdorf. Since both screens and the wash press performed to the full satisfaction of the customer, we received in summer 2014 also the order for the equipment for the rest of the four lines. Presently, the screens of line 4 are installed, i.e. when the structural measures are finished. According to the time schedule the overall project is planned to be finished by the end of 2015.
