[...]The advanced treatment of sewage sludge or industrial residual sludge is increasingly gaining in importance also for industrial customers. Whereas, until recently, the common strategy was to pass the sludge on to disposal companies at low costs, this has now become more and more complicated, difficult and especially more expensive due to the modified and now more stringent German Fertilizer Regulation and Waste Sewage Sludge Ordinance and because of the generally increasing costs in the disposal industry. Therefore, industrial customers increasingly concern themselves with strategies how to additionally treat their sludges on site using the residual heat from the process or wastewater. In addition to the significant sludge volume reduction and the utilisation of exhaust heat energy, the dry sludge, due to its high heat value, often represents also a valuable fuel for use in the own incineration plant on site. Project: paper industry in Brazil A paper industry in Brazil generates with its own wastewater treatment plant up to 45 m³/h (1 – 5 % DS) surplus sludge. Up to now, the surplus sludge has been dewatered and transported to a landfill. For cost reasons, the sludge will in the future be dewatered to > 21% with five HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® 800.2 units and then dried to approx. 90% solids content with a HUBER Belt Dryer BT 30. The dryer is designed for a throughput of 45,000 t dewatered sewage sludge. The dried sludge is fed to the company’s own biomass incineration plant and the energy produced there is used for sewage sludge drying – a cycle with optimal exploitation of otherwise unutilized heat sources. Delivery and installation of the plant components starts in the middle of 2019, commissioning is planned for the beginning of 2020. Project: disposal industry in Germany A disposal company in Southern Germany provides the service of disposing residual materials from municipal sewage treatment plants (grit trap material, screenings, sewage sludge) and diverse types of sludge and residues, mainly form the food industry, industrial kitchens and other industrial companies. To increase the capacity and economic efficiency of their plant, they have decided to install a HUBER Belt Dryer BT 24 with up to 40,000 t/a throughput capacity. The removed screenings contain household waste, faecal matter, toilet paper and mineral solids. The screenings volume depends, not only on the separation size of the screen, but also on the type of sewer system. The solids content of municipal screenings varies between 10 % and 25 %, depending on the type of screen. Approximately 90 % of the solids are volatile (organic). Due to their very high water content, their heterogenous composition and unaesthetic appearance screenings must be treated before they can be disposed of. The reasons for this are the increasing demands on the treated wastewater and sludge combined with dwindling personnel resources and rising costs for energy and operating materials. As a result, the treatment of wastewater and sludge must be optimized in an efficient manner. The challenges: Counteracting rising operating costs and quality requirements with the potentials of digitalization In order to successfully meet these challenges and support wastewater treatment plants in their operation, HUBER is developing new solutions and services. In doing so, the company is increasingly focusing on the benefits of digitalization and digital transformation and is further developing its products and solutions by consistently incorporating digital potential into the product development process. The Objectives: State description and optimization potential through the evaluation of data The “raw material” of digital transformation is primarily data. These arise at a machine or a process at any time through the use of sensors and actuators. The collection and subsequent evaluation of this data requires both specific knowledge of the machine and the process technology as well as knowledge of mathematics and statistics. The evaluation makes it possible to describe the condition of a machine or process and to identify optimization potentials. These can be recommendations for low-wear operation, tips for reducing electricity and water consumption, as well as suggestions for reducing operating materials, such as precipitation and flocculation aids. The implementation: Development of the HUBER Cloud Solution HCS To implement these goals, HUBER has started the development of the HUBER Cloud Solution HCS, in which the digital service offers will be bundled in the future. The basis of this service is the recording of data at the local switchgear and control system of the machine or process and the transmission of the data in encrypted form via the internet to the HUBER Cloud. Two options are available for this: On the one hand, it is possible to integrate the data recording directly into the existing programmable logic controller (PLC). For this purpose, the PLC program is adapted so that it sends the data points available in the control program via the internet connection. The Internet connection is established by a mobile modem that is additionally installed in the control cabinet. On the other hand, it is possible to use an IoT kit (IoT = Internet of Things). In order to be able to transmit the machine data to the HUBER Cloud in this setup, a connection between the local controller and the IoT kit is required. Via this connection, the PLC of the local control can provide the IoT controller of the IoT kit with those data points that are to be transmitted to the HUBER Cloud. The IoT controller of the IoT kit can then collect the provided data points via the established connection and send them in encrypted form to the HUBER Cloud. A mobile modem is installed in the IoT kit to establish the required internet connection. The data in the HUBER Cloud In the HUBER Cloud, data is received and stored so that it is available for further processing. On the one hand, this includes the real-time calculation of key figures, which can be used to interpret the status of the machine or process. In the event of both atypical, abrupt changes and creeping, gradual deterioration in the key figures, the operator can be given immediate recommendations for action to maintain and improve the process. On the other hand, the data is used for further analysis to create additional key figures and gain new insights. [...]Mannheim, Germany First of three HUBER Belt Dryer BT 22 units in regular operation Back in 2017, HUBER received the order to modernise the sludge drying system of Stadtentwässerung Mannheim on the site of the Mannheim wastewater treatment plant. Three HUBER Belt Dryer BT units of size 22 replace the two older drum dryers. The modernisation of the sewage sludge drying system not only includes the dismantling of the old drum dryers and the construction of the new belt dryers. The entire heating concept was also adapted to the new medium-temperature belt dryers. The objective of Stadtentwässerung Mannheim is to make the operation of the wastewater treatment plant largely CO2 neutral in the future. The HUBER Belt Dryer BT contributes significantly to this by utilising the waste heat of the combined heat and power units. [...]Vilshofen, Germany At the start of 2026, a comprehensive one-off plant maintenance was carried out on the HUBER machines at the Vilshofen sewage treatment works in Lower Bavaria. Designed for a population equivalent of 56,000, the plant is operated by Vilshofen Municipal Wastewater Services. During normal plant operation, one or two staff members are usually on site. Since 2007, the sewage treatment works has used two HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT® Ro2 1000/5 units and one HUBER Coanda Grit Washer RoSF4/2. These are supplemented by two vortex washers from a third-party manufacturer. As part of the service call-out, all relevant spare and wear parts were replaced, including the third-party components. Professional on-site execution The HUBER service technicians, Dominik Schuster and Kürsat Yavuz, impressed the wastewater plant managers, Erich Frauenknecht and Ralf Klaiber, with their punctuality, technical expertise, tidy working methods, and friendly manner. Spare parts from a third-party manufacturer, supplied by the customer, were also fitted to the usual high standard. ‘Dominik took the time to answer all our questions – brilliant!’ said Erich Frauenknecht. Based on previous experience, the performance of the service team was rated particularly highly. [...]HUBER SE recently organised the 1st HUBER Milk Day in cooperation with the dairy company Jäger GmbH. Nearly 50 representatives from the dairy industry came to inform themselves about the subject wastewater directly at Milchwerk Jäger GmbH at Haag near Munich. After the welcoming speeches of the companies participating, Mr. Alvaro Carozzi from the engineering office Steinle at Weyarn explained the fundamentals of wastewater treatment and the general process technologies. Beside legislation topics, he placed the focus on typical methods applied to treat dairy wastewater. HUBER SE informed then about products and solutions for the food industry in general and specifically for the dairy industry. In addition to wastewater treatment topics, it was also dealt with issues of the future, such as water and heat recycling, residue utilisation (dewatering/drying) and cooling of wastewater by means of heat exchangers. Besides, current projects involving these subjects were presented. Mr. Michael Kreisel of Bayerische Milchindustrie eG presented their sludge dewatering concept at the location Jessen where a HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® is used to dewater the generated flotate sludge.
