[...]Dale Foster, HUBER’s Area Manager , made a presentation on “Did we reach Utopia ? ” This presentation did not perfectly fit within the 'cross-sector collaboration' area, however, we wanted to share our experience of an exercise with a water company, which broke down many barriers and through the collaborative efforts of many stakeholders delivered exactly what the business needed. The challenge set was to deliver a cost effective/affordable, standard sludge thickening solution that met the clients exacting requirements and could be rolled out to multiple sites quickly and efficiently using a DfMA approach. The journey started quite a few years before the actual RFI was released and the presentation provided a road map of the trials, tribulations and eventual triumph of the process. For us, this was the best result of a collaborative exercise we have been involved with and it should deliver significant efficiencies and savings for the client. HUBER were awarded exclusively in October 2021 a Contract Award Notice for what is known as the Lot 4A Framework Agreement. The HUBER S-DISC Sludge thickener is the simplest & easiest to operate sludge thickener on the market. The two sizes have typical throughputs of up to 20 & 40 m3/hour on typical 0.5% DS SAS. When compared to competing technologies, such as drums & gravity belt thickeners (GBT) the HUBER S-DISC outperforms in many categories: Lower capital cost. Smaller, more compact footprint (physical &carbon). Lower wash water & polymer demand. Significantly reduced maintenance tasks. Lowest WLC. Visitors to our stand, were able to speak to our experienced team and discuss HUBER sludge solutions Sludge Screening, Sludge Thickening, Sludge Dewatering This year we showcased the new innovative Carbon Win® Process along with a model showing how this carbon reduction process and solution work. With the focus and drive in the industry for both energy and carbon reduction, the HUBER CarbonWin® Process ticks all the boxes. We provided an overview and a structured walk through of the drivers, solution, system design and options followed by the data supporting the performance of the process. We explained the benefits of the system which are an alternative to primary settlement tank construction on new works, space-saving integration into existing works to provide increased capacity and separation of primary sludge with a significant reduction in (COD/BOD/TSS) as well as significant energy savings through the reduction of the loading on the existing biological treatment systems on the works. This solution is well placed as a discussion point around the topic of minimising and decarbonising the use of energy in the sludge treatment processes and attendees took away some alternative ideas and options for how to optimise existing works and achieve more efficiency through design of new works.[...]

We developed this containerised S-DISC solution because we saw a great opportunity to provide customers with: A plug & play package so the client would not need to source from different suppliers whilst incurring additional cost & risk when integrating multiple suppliers’ kit Fully assemble & test in our works to reduce site commissioning phase, optimisation and handover time Offer reduced project delivery times through repeatability A solution that met water company specifications & was designed with ease of operation and maintenance in mind A UK standard solution with repeatability The containerised S-DISC solution comprises of everything necessary to provide a cost effective, small footprint, plug and play sludge thickening plant: The S-DISC1 sludge thickener & flocculation reactor. Polymer mixing & injection ring. Polymer make up & dosing plant. Thin & thickened sludge pumps. Sludge flow meter. All interconnecting pipework. Control panel & all interconnecting cabling. Telemetry marshalling box. Ventilation fan. The above components are fitted to a GMS skid, which is then slid into a purpose-built container that is designed to provide all round access for maintenance. Flanges are built into the container to allow easy connection for feed & thickened sludge, filtrate, washwater, dilution water (poly) & polymer feed. There is also a drain connection on the outside of the container in case of spillage of polymer within the rig. There is also a simple connection for the electrical power supply cabling. This approach enables us to test and ‘dry’ commission the plant before despatch. This means that once the necessary service inputs are connected the plant can be made operational, optimised (wet commissioned) and handed over to the end user far quicker than is normally the case. The presentation will highlight the challenges faced in relation to addressing eye watering numbers of unsatisfactory CSO's & Stormwater Overflows from the perspective of screening. Over the years we have supplied close on 1400 screens designed for protecting receiving watercourses where CSO's & Stormwater Overflows discharge into them. Currently, on average it takes many months from initial concept to us receiving an order. We contend that to meet the challenges ahead we cannot deal with the projected number of projects the way we have done, it is unsustainable & will lead to failure in WaSC’s meeting their outputs. That is where we need to inject a serious dose of pragmatism into the delivery & construction process. As a result, we have embarked on a campaign for as much standardisation as possible in relation to screens & screen chambers. This has created some traction with WaSC's, but there is still lots to do. So, what could be done to streamline the delivery process whilst potentially reducing carbon emissions, & perhaps more importantly, keeping disruption to a minimum for the public who so much want to see the environmental impact of CSO’s & Stormwater Overflows dealt with. [...]Project Profile Buxton STW serves the town of Buxton and its surrounding areas, HUBER had been involved in the site since 2003 when a major upgrade was carried out the inlet works and a subsequent MBR plant was installed downstream. Since this project HUBER had been regularly engaged to look at improving the effectiveness of the inlet works and screenings handling plant to improve the screenings removal to lessen the impact on the downstream equipment, there were challenges surrounding this due to the location of the existing screens and macerator setup. As part of the AMP6 programme of works it was decided amongst other things that a new inlet works and screenings handling facility would be built to improve the screenings removal on an unused part of the site, the site is located in a narrow valley and space is limited. This lead to several challenges and involved a phased installation. HUBER Technology Supplied: 2 x HUBER Belt Screen EscaMax® 6000x1152/6 60o 6mm perforated plate screens. 2 x HUBER Screenings Wash Press WAP® L 4 screenings handling plant 1 x HUBER Launder Trough 1 x Static Stone Trap Objective The primary objective was to provide new 6mm inlet screening to protect the downstream process from screenings and other debris and also provide screenings handling plant to wash and compact the removed screenings. Solution As we had been involved in various aspects of the site since the original upgrade in 2003 we had a lot of knowledge of the existing inlet works and the problems it suffered with. By early engagement with both Severn Trent Water and the successful contractor Mott Macdonald Bentley we were able to involved with the project from the outset. Each screen supplied was required to handle a flow rate of 381 l/sec working on duty/duty basis with the subsequent screenings handling plant being able to handle 4m3/hr of screenings. A further challenge was the location of the screenings handling plant, this required in the region of 25 metres of launder trough to transport the screenings. The new inlet screenings solution has been found to be very effective.
