[...]Devon, England HUBER Technology recently completed and commissioned a large project for South West Water to improve the inlet works facility to treat the sewage from the town of Exmouth in Devon. Project Profile HUBER Technology were approached by Tecker towards the end of 2015 to look at improving the existing inlet works on site. The site features a balance tank which was prone to a large build up of rag and screening which were overloading the existing inlet works. Cleaning of this rag build up proved difficult and dangerous so the project was split into two sections, supply of a coarse screen to protect the balance and storm tanks and supply of new fine inlet screens and screenings handling equipment. HUBER Technology Supplied: 1 x HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® 4160/990/40, throughput 1027 l/s peak flow per screen 2 x HUBER Belt Screen EscaMax® 5000/1352/6, throughput 363 l/sec peak flow per screen 2 x HUBER Screenings Wash Press WAP® WAP/L BG4-V, throughput 4.5m³/hr Objective The challenge on site was to maintain adequate screening on site whilst the new screens were installed. Previously the flow into the balance tank was via four pumped rising mains, flow to the inlet screens was controlled by penstocks in the balance tank. We worked with the contractors – Tecker to develop a solution to minimise downtime. This solution was to install the coarse screen into a off-site fabricated site channel which could be mounted on top of the existing balance tank structure. This was installed on site and the rising main connections made, the coarse screen was then installed into it with the screening discharging directly to a skip. Following agreement on the installation sequences with Tecker we ensured the hydraulic constraints of the structure were taken into account to ensure the screen performed correctly and adequate bypass weirs were provided. The fine screens and handling plant were installed in a phased manner to allow the screening at the inlet works to be maintained. [...]Minworth, England A HUBER Technology Wastewater Case Study at Minworth STW HUBER Technology recently completed a project at one of the largest inland sewage treatment works in the UK, Minworth STW. Minworth serves a population equivalent of 1.75 million from Birmingham with full flow to treatment of 1,070Ml/d. The works treats sludge arising from a population equivalent of 2.3 million which is made up of indigenous sludge plus imported sludge from the nearby Coleshill STW and various works in Staffordshire and north Warickshire. Good early engagement from all the concerned parties helped enormously to discuss all the possibilities and deliver a good solution. Project Profile This project was part of the installation of the Cambi THP Plant at Minworth, Severn Trent Water’s largest sewage treatment works, as part of the improvement to their digestion process to further enhance renewable energy production from biogas. A solution needed to be found as the Cambi Plant required screening sludge to 6mm in 2 directions. Early involvement and the use of Collaboration software 360 BIM was used by all parties, which helped to manage the design side of the project. The STRAINPRESS® screen prevents solids greater than 5mm two directions passing into the downstream flow before compacting them and dropping them into the skips located underneath the gantry. Solution The contractor wanted to capture lessons learnt from previous THP installations so a visit to Cardiff STW was set up so that they could see a similar HUBER packaged project with STRAINPRESS® mounted on gantry operating. Benefits could then be seen using this pre fabricated off site package plant solution, where all the in house electric testing and some of the dry commissioning can be undertaken. This all leads to a much shorter and safer installation time on site. At the same time, such preliminary screens also protect the operation of downstream machinery and units, such as a screw conveyor or a wash press, and ensure the smooth operation of the entire wastewater treatment plant. In addition to the type of material to be expected, however, other unforeseen materials are increasingly entering the sewage treatment plant influent, such as canisters, square timbers and tyres. Even though screening plants are built for coarse and bulky material, such matter can cause damage, resulting in longer downtimes, higher costs and, above all, additional stress. To prevent this, HUBER has developed a worldwide unique system for wastewater screens: the HUBER Detection System Safety Vision. HUBER Safety Vision – innovative digitalisation module The innovative HUBER Detection System Safety Vision enables the screen to “see” the screenings and reliably identify potentially critical contaminants. This is achieved by precise real-time measurement of the screenings with sensors, fast processing of the measurement results, and an intelligent evaluation logic that examines the measurement results for defined anomalies. As soon as potentially critical screenings are detected in this way, the operation of the screen stops immediately. At the same time, an image of the situation in the screen is recorded and transmitted to the operator. Based on this message, the operator can decide individually whether the screen should continue to be operated or should stop until the debris is removed. This effective protection mechanism reliably prevents damage to the screen or the downstream equipment, which not only increases the availability of the machines involved, but also improves the operational safety of the entire plant technology. These occur primarily shortly after the onset of heavy rainfall events and cause an extremely high pollutant load in the inflow to the treatment plant. In unfavourable cases, the screen can become overloaded by the high freight volumes and fail, with the result that the wastewater reaches the next process stage almost unpurified. To safely avoid such situations, the measurement results recorded by Safety Vision are used and checked for known events with the help of a sophisticated evaluation. If the evaluation registers signs of an incipient flush surge, the screen is automatically run clear and set to „flush surge mode“. This has the positive effect of reducing the risk of overloading the screen to a minimum. If, in the course of time, the pollutant load and thus also the risk of overloading the screen decreases, the screen adapts to the current conditions by automatically switching to the appropriate operating mode. Adaptive operation thus both prevents overloading of the screen and ensures that the screen is always optimally utilised. However, this function does not only affect the screen, but also includes other HUBER machines that are directly connected to the screen. Bringing the best technologies for wastewater and sludge treatment to Brazil” Lucas Funari works at HUBER do Brasil, the Brazilian subsidiary of HUBER SE, and has been supporting the Americas Sales team at the headquarters in Berching since September 2021. In the interview, he talks about his work at HUBER, what drives him as a real nature lover in his daily work and what it is like to work for a globally active company with a history of over 150 years. In addition, he gives private insights and explains his “preference” for the cold German winter and why he is particularly fond of Bavarian beer gardens. HUBER Communication: Hello Lucas, welcome again to the HUBER headquarters in Berching. You recently joined us from HUBER do Brasil, the Brazilian subsidiary. How long have you been with HUBER SE now and how long will you stay here in Germany? Lucas Funari: Thank you very much for the words of welcome! I started at HUBER in Germany on 15 September 2021 and will stay for one year, until September 2022. What were the reasons that you came to Germany to join us? Lucas Funari: The main reason was the mutual exchange of knowledge with our parent company here in Germany, both in the field of machine technology and in project and sales management. HUBER Brazil saw the opportunity to develop a long-term training project and brought this idea to HUBER in Germany. The company supported the idea from the first moment. How can the mutual exchange of knowledge take shape in the future and what experience do you want to bring to HUBER Brazil in the future? Lucas Funari: The experiences of working here in Germany – including being together in the office, specific trainings, plant visits, discussing projects and contracts – will help to strengthen the values of HUBER SE and subsequently also improve my work at HUBER Brazil. What were your responsibilities at HUBER do Brasil and what tasks do you now take on at the headquarters? Lucas Funari: As I have had to work from home since March 2020 due to the pandemic, I continue my tasks in Brazil while I am here in Germany, but now even faster and more agile to resolve matters with Germany. In Brazil, my tasks included acquiring new projects, visiting customers, sizing equipment and processes, preparing technical and commercial proposals, selling new projects and managing the projects sold, from sales to on-site delivery. How did the team welcome you and how were the first months? Lucas Funari: The welcome from my colleagues was incredible and made it very easy for me to settle in and get started at HUBER Germany. I had great support from the colleagues I had already worked with from Brazil, from the Americas Sales team and also from the HR department, which took care of the practical organisation of my arrival. I am also very grateful to a colleague from the Industry department who helped me a lot with local tips and even lent me two bikes to explore the region. As I arrived at the end of summer, I was able to spend a few afternoons with my colleagues in the famous beer gardens. The adjustment and the organisation of your stay were certainly very exciting. Lucas Funari: The first month I spent living and working in Germany was quite intense, with many new things both in my personal and professional life. But I feel a great sense of gratitude for this incredible opportunity and I’m looking to make the most of every second. What and at which university did you study and were you able to gain professional experience before joining HUBER? Lucas Funari: I studied environmental engineering at the Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo (Polytechnic Department of the University of São Paulo, editor's note). Before joining HUBER Brazil, I worked at the university for one year, researching pilot plants with ultrafiltration membranes for municipal wastewater treatment. Later, still during my studies, I started as an intern in an engineering company called Sharewater in the field of design, construction and operation of wastewater treatment plants. After I graduated in 2016, I started as an engineer at Sharewater, where I was involved in a project of a HUBER plant (BioMem Membranes). This gave me the opportunity to get to know HUBER Brazil. The company later invited me to work in their office, where I have been since July 2018. That was very cool, because before I worked at HUBER Brazil, I was their customer! Have you settled in well in Germany and what has been the biggest adjustment for you so far? Lucas Funari: The biggest adjustment is the language, which I have been learning since February 2020, but which still makes it very difficult for me to interact better with the local culture. Besides the language, the climate is also a big adjustment, because in Brazil we don't have such cold temperatures or such short days in winter. In Brazil, the sun still shines between 7am and 6pm on the "worst" day of winter and temperatures rarely drop below ten degrees. I'm a bit worried about the coming winter, but that's part of the experience. And when you're not at work – have you found any leisure activities? Lucas Funari: Yes, outside of work I enjoy outdoor activities, especially hiking, walking and cycling. We also enjoy visiting the historical and medieval towns here in Germany on the weekends. Rothenburg ob der Tauber was one of them that we found very beautiful, very different from what you find in Brazil. As we arrived at the end of the summer season, we were also able to enjoy the beer gardens and we now understand why Germans like them so much: it is really very pleasant to sit in the sun and enjoy a good German beer in good company. Let’s get back to work: What drives you every day, what would you call your “purpose”? Lucas Funari: I think it is the will to bring the best wastewater and sludge treatment technologies to Brazil. These are already a reality in the most developed countries, but for Brazil they are still a distant dream. Behind this, of course, is the intention to make a contribution – if only a small one – to the preservation of Brazil's waters through the efficient treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater. And what contribution do you think HUBER can make here? Lucas Funari: I see HUBER SE as an important player in improving the Brazilian situation in terms of wastewater treatment technologies and processes, especially in the reuse of resources such as sewage sludge. My top motivation is to learn more about these technologies and apply them in the projects we work on in Brazil. We hear that you feel very comfortable at HUBER. How do you perceive the global HUBER family and what would you describe as the "unifying bond"? Lucas Funari: Part of the experience and goals of my working year in Germany is just to get to know the HUBER family better, especially the headquarters in Berching. I think the most important unifying element is the diversity of the global HUBER family. When we look at the diversity of cultures, languages, traditions and histories of all the countries where HUBER SE is present, either with subsidiaries as in Brazil or with agencies, we see the true strength of our company: where each culture also contributes to the growth of HUBER as a whole and teaches us to be more open and tolerant towards others. Finally, let’s look ahead to next year: HUBER will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2022. What is it like for you to work in a company with such a long tradition? Lucas Funari: Every time I remember it, I am still amazed at how big HUBER's history is. It’s great to be able to work in a company with such a long tradition and a global presence. The company I worked for before was very small and had small projects accordingly. So the change to HUBER was very big and very nice, especially because you handle big projects and can count on all the experience gained in the 150-year history. This gives me a lot of security and peace of mind to make decisions and carry out the projects we have in Brazil. Is there anything you wish for yourself personally, but also for HUBER, for the future? Lucas Funari: That we can emerge stronger from this complicated situation (Corona, editor’s note) that we are all going through and continue to contribute to the conservation of nature with new projects in Brazil and in the world. [...]As the original designer and manufacturer of the world recognised and respected HUBER STRAINPRESS® pressurised sludge screen, it has been increasingly interesting to us to see the number of different applications where the STRAINPRESS® has been utilised and requested. From its original launch into the market in 1990, with its cast steel casing, chain-drive motors and old stuffing box seals, the unit then underwent a period of innovation in 1999 and the latest design was launched in 2000. The modifications included items such as the whole casing now being manufactured and supplied in 304L stainless steel as standard and therefore increasing its asset life against that of the old steel casing versions, which could be subject to corrosion after around 10 years. Additional major modifications at the same time were a direct geared motor drive in place of the old chain-driven design and an up-to-date mechanical seal arrangement to replace the old stuffing box sealing. These new improvements in its design meant that the STRAINPRESS® was now suitably upgraded to ensure that the whole life cost of the unit was reduced and thus allowed it to comply with the latest specifications and market requirements. With this latest design and its extensive track record of over 345 units in the UK and over 1000 units worldwide it is therefore renowned as a market leader in its field. One of the main strengths of any supplier is for them to understand and be aware of its products capabilities in terms of sizing / throughput and performance but also the applications and the effects that different products and solids loading can have on that unit. While the municipal wastewater market tends to have a fairly recognised and well proven range of applications and has full confidence in the unit’s capabilities, this was not always the case when industrial applications are presented to us. This is particularly apparent with the commercial Anaerobic Digestion (AD) market which has expanded over the past 5 to 6 years. HUBER recognised this particular area as a potential application for the STRAINPRESS® units some 7 or 8 years ago and undertook a large number of trials on different applications within this area. It was observed from the very first trial that the characteristics of the digestate required re-evaluation of how the machine could best be optimised in order to give the best performance in this area. HUBER undertook a large number of trials on applications with a series of end users and sites and different basket hole perforations where items including the hydraulic throughput, solids throughput, temperature of the sludge and screenings retention were all recorded. From these extensive trials it was apparent that specific items in terms of some changes to the build of the unit together with the control of the unit were required and from this the industrial version of the recognised STRAINPRESS® unit was developed with validated sizing parameters. The main lessons learned from this was that one size or type does not fit all and from this sound base we have grown this now so that numerous units have been supplied into this demanding and difficult application sector over the past 5 years and all of which are working successfully. Our extensive experience has shown that each application must be looked at and engineered on its own merits , should anyone tell you otherwise then they have obviously not done their homework or undertaken the hard work upfront in order to gain the experience necessary. [...]Fully automatic throughput and performance control HUBER develops a revolutionary control system for BT Belt Dryers: The system is able to adjust the plant throughput fully automatically to varying dry substance contents in the dewatered sewage sludge. Operator attendance is thus reduced to a minimum. Dewatered sewage sludge, even if coming from a sewage treatment plant, does usually not show constant properties. Variations in organic content, chemical composition or polymer necessarily lead to varying dewatering results. Minor variations can normally be balanced quite well, but variations greater than +/– 1% DR per hour may impair the drying process. Throughput performance will decrease or the required degree of drying may not be achieved. The plant operates less efficiently and operating costs increase. The gap between costs and efficiency will increase even more if also larger amounts of external sludge are fed to the plant. Jumps from several percentage points DR per hour are frequently unavoidable as the sludges are in most cases stored in a large bunker and fed to the dryer as an undefined mixture. Under these circumstances, it is a great challenge for the plant operators to run the plant at full capacity. With an increasing number of different sludge sources it is becoming virtually impossible to achieve a homogenisation of the sludges with justifiable operator attention and personnel expenses. The number of plants which accept also external sludge will rise in the future due to the tendency to build large sludge centres. HUBER has therefore dealt intensively with this topic and developed a fully automatic control system which continuously measures the DR content of the sludge before the sludge is fed to the drying plant. This ensures that the drying parameters can be set correctly at the moment the sludge is fed to the dryer. This method is unique on the sludge drying market. The control system consists of a continuously working measuring system which measures the dry substance content of the sewage sludge before the sludge is fed to the dryer. A complex control system fully automatically adjusts all operating parameters of the sludge drying plant to the specific requirements. It is thus possible to adjust jumps of several percentage points DR per hour reliably and without notable fluctuations in performance. The dryer can be operated continuously at the full water evaporation capacity. The following diagram shows dry substance content and water evaporation during a 24-hour measurement period on the test plant. Despite major variations in inlet DR the dryer adjusts itself fully automatically to the required water evaporation of 1,400 kg/h.
