[...]Worldwide Grit chamber cleaners are generally reliable and safe, working around the clock, come rain or shine. Nevertheless, the ravages of time take their toll on the structure. After 30, 40 or even more than 50 years, even carefully maintained and well-looked-after cleaners eventually reach the end of their service life. Paving the way for the future It is wise to plan for the future cleaning of your longitudinal grit trap early on and with foresight. As is so often the case, there are various solutions available for this. However, before addressing the issue of grit channel clearance, it must first be clarified whether the old concrete grit channel still meets current requirements – in terms of separation efficiency, for example – and what condition the concrete structure is in. This will determine whether a new build or a possible refurbishment (retrofit) without costly civil engineering works is required. If the decision is made to carry out a retrofit, one either seeks a suitable replacement for the grit channel cleaner or explores a new, innovative method of removing the grit from the grit channel. Unfortunately, replacing the cleaning system presents many difficulties, as a one-to-one replacement is usually not possible. On the one hand, many of the manufacturers of those scrapers are no longer on the market, and on the other, alternative products are completely unique. Optimal results with modern grit traps HUBER offers an innovative alternative: the HUBER Longitudinal Grit Trap ROTAMAT® Ro6 with a grit removal screw. What makes it special is the robust screw conveyor at the bottom of the grit channel. This screw, with its hollow shaft, extends along the entire length (up to 42 m) of the grit channel and conveys the sediment step by step to the grit pump (centrifugal pump or pneumatic lift). Blockages in the grit pump, as is often the case with blade-type scrapers, are a thing of the past, as the grit is fed to the pump in small batches. Thanks to the use of the grit removal screw at the bottom of the grit channel, bridge-mounted scrapers are a thing of the past, and the grit traps can now be fully covered to prevent odour emissions. HUBER can, as usual, supply other internal components, such as aeration or grease removal systems, in stainless steel to suit the specific concrete structure. We also provide a comprehensive engineering package. If the old grit channel is to be optimised not only for grit removal but also in terms of separation efficiency, HUBER offers the ideal solution in the form of the innovative HUBER Grit Trap GritWolf® with an integrated lamella separator. In this case, however, the cross-section of the grit channel must be adjusted accordingly. In recent years, HUBER has successfully supplied the solution with the grit removal screw at the bottom of the channel. Among other projects, large mechanical treatment stages have been commissioned in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Lithuania and the USA, either as new builds or retrofit projects. [...]Wittenberge, Germany The Wittenberge municipal utilities have set itself the goal of making the heat supply for the city in north-western Brandenburg and its surrounding districts largely climate-neutral by 2045. As part of municipal heating planning, various options for expanding and decarbonising the heating network are being investigated. River water as a source of energy A first step in this direction was completed at the end of last year with the construction of a new heating plant featuring a heat pump system, an electric boiler and a CHP unit. The heat pumps use water from the Stepenitz river as their energy source. The electrical power for this comes from the CHP unit. However, due to the biological activity in the river water, the heat pump cannot be connected to it directly, as biofouling – the growth of microorganisms, plants, algae and animals on underwater structures – would impair the heat pump's performance and result in high maintenance costs. HUBER Heat Exchanger RoWin14 The newly installed HUBER Heat Exchanger RoWin14 plays a crucial role in this process. By interconnecting the HUBER system, the energy from the river is first transferred to a clean medium, the heating water, enabling the heat pump to operate properly. The process To extract heat from the river, approximately 200 m³/h of water is diverted from the river through an outlet structure. This water is pre-cleaned using a drum screen before being pumped to the combined heat and power plant 270 metres away. Fully automatic cleaning system There, the HUBER Heat Exchanger RoWin14 transfers the heat to an intermediate circuit. Biofouling that forms on the wastewater heat exchanger surface is reliably and fully automatically removed by the patented cleaning system. This ensures that the designed output can be achieved. The Carrier heat pump can use the river heat transferred to the heating circuit water as source energy, thus providing a heating capacity of approximately 1,100 kW. Up to 780 kW of this comes from the river. The plant has been operating reliably since commissioning in 2024, supplying clean thermal energy to the municipal utilities' great satisfaction. Other municipal utilities have visited the plant and are evaluating the utilisation of river water heat based on the Wittenberge model.[...]

[...]Berching, Germany HUBER Chemicals Dosing DIGIT-DOSE setting new standards for the efficient operation of flotation plants Industrial wastewater treatment cannot be imagined anymore without flotation technology. Flotation ensures that suspended matter, grease and particulate pollutants are effectively removed from production wastewater. If also dissolved pollutants need to be converted to particulate matter, precipitants and flocculants are added. Such additives can enormously increase cleaning efficiency, they are however also the major cost factor in the operating costs for a wastewater treatment plant. As few as possible, yet as many as necessary of such chemicals should therefore be used! In practice, it is however difficult, not to say almost impossible, to dose the precipitants and flocculants optimally. The wastewater generated in industrial companies comes from different production processes, with partly strongly varying flow volumes and loads. To ensure continuous feeding of the flotation plant nevertheless, a mixing and balancing tank for homogenisation is installed upstream of the flotation plant. Varying loads can be reduced this way but not prevented completely. Varying loads cause increased operating costs To ensure in daily practice that the required clarification efficiency is achieved even with peak loads, precipitants and flocculants are overdosed. Another possibility is the manual adjustment of the doses by the operating staff. This reduces chemicals consumption but requires personnel. Intelligent freight-dependent dose control minimizes operating costs HUBER has risen to this challenge: with a flotation plant that both achieves the required clarification results reliably and at any time despite varying inlet loads and at the same time minimizes the consumption of precipitants and flocculants without staff attendance! This challenging task has been met with the newly developed DIGIT-DOSE system. The intelligent dose regulation is at the heart of the DIGIT-DOSE system, permanently determining from the measurement data of different sensors the pollution degree of the wastewater and adding then the required dose of different chemicals. Such optimized use of chemicals reduces also the amount of flotate sludge. Beside the operating costs for chemicals, disposal costs for flotate sludge are another main cost factor. DIGIT-DOSE meets expectations in practical operation The feedback received from plant operators to date are very positive and confirm that DIGT-DOSE has fully reached the development targets: significant chemicals savings less flotate sludge improved clarification results reduced staff involvement significantly reduced operating costs The investment costs for the HUBER Chemicals Dosing DIGIT-DOSE pay off for plant operators within a very short time due to the significantly reduced operating costs. Existing plants retrofitted with DIGIT-DOSE have shown that the ROI (Return on Investment) can be achieved within only one year. If HUBER DIGIT-DOSE is considered and included already in the project engineering phase, the size of mixing and balancing tanks can be reduced to the minimum. Any load variations still present can then reliably be managed with the freight-controlled chemicals dosing solution without any negative effects on operating costs and/or plant efficiency.[...]
[...]Isle of Man, Great Britain The first HUBER Belt Dryer BT installation in Great Britain went officially into operation recently. On the Isle of Man, up to 12,775 t sewage sludge per year will efficiently be dried from now on. HUBER received the order to build a belt dryer on the Isle of Man at the beginning of 2015. The customer wanted to reduce the energy expenditure for sludge drying and the resulting high disposal costs. The HUBER BT 16 achieves this most impressively. The sewage treatment plant of the town Douglas does not have any sludge digestion facilities. There is therefore no exhaust air available for operating the dryer, and only a limited amount of gas and fuel oil is available and hence expensive. The contractor decided therefore to use a highly-efficient, electrically heated boiler for heat supply to the dryer. As the site is located very close to the sea (approx. 300 m), all components of the dryer had to be manufactured from V4A material, not only the dryer segments but also the complete outer shell and the insulation of the air and heating lines. For the cooling water supply for vapour condensation even titanium is used in this case because of the extremely high chloride contents of more than 1,000 mg/l. After a construction time of about one year the belt dryer went into operation in June 2016. The HUBER Belt Dryer BT could be put into regular operation after only a very short start-up period. This project shows how flexible and adaptable the HUBER Belt Dryer BT can be. The dryer easily copes with even the most difficult local conditions of a site on an island and offers the customer an efficient, robust solution to reduce operating costs.
