[...]Elimination and reduction of micropollutants with the PAC process Trace substances can be removed from wastewater with the help of powdered activated carbon (PAC), as the micropollutants adsorb to the activated carbon. Powdered activated carbon is ground activated carbon. According to DIN 12903, at least 95 percent of the mass fraction must have a grain size of less than 150 µm. The average particle diameter of typical powdered activated carbons is approximately in the range of 10 µm to 50 µm. For the elimination of micropollutants, the powdered activated carbon is added directly to the wastewater to be treated. The activated carbon can be added at different points in the wastewater treatment process (simultaneous process). In the "Ulm process", a separate adsorption tank is used after the biological stage. There, fresh activated carbon is added to the treated wastewater. PAC Powdered Activated Carbon In principle, it is important that the process ensures sufficient contact time so that the trace substances can adsorb to the powdered activated carbon. The powdered activated carbon must then be separated from the treated wastewater. This is usually done after precipitant addition in a sedimentation tank, where some of the separated carbon is discharged as excess carbon together with the excess sludge and some is returned to the contact tank as return carbon. Due to the recirculation, the activated carbon remains in the wastewater treatment process for several days. It is very important that the treated wastewater is free of activated carbon before it is discharged into the receiving water. The powdered activated carbon (PAC) should be separated as completely as possible from the treated wastewater. For this reason, a downstream filtration stage (polishing filter) is necessary that is able to retain any remaining fine carbon particles. HUBER hosted the meeting in the person of DWA Advisory Board member and Sales Director Rainer Köhler, which concluded with a tour of the production halls at the company's headquarters in Berching/Erasbach. After the official welcome, the agenda of the meeting included brief annual reports, an exchange on current challenges in the water industry, news from the federal office and the annual goals of the Bavarian regional association, before honours and the election and re-election of advisory board members were held. At the end of the one-day meeting, interested participants could join a factory tour. [...]Schnaittachtal, Germany The Schnaittachtal sewage treatment plant has been in operation for almost 50 years and currently employs six male and one female sewage treatment operators. For many years, the plant has relied on HUBER machines for mechanical wastewater treatment, such as the HUBER Screenings Wash Press WAP® Ro4-OS, HUBER Screw Conveyor Ro8 and HUBER STEP SCREEN. These have now been replaced by a new HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT® Ro2 size 1600 with a 3 mm bar spacing, a HUBER Screw Conveyor Ro8 T and HUBER Screenings Wash Press WAP® SL. A quarter of a century in service In service since 1999, the STEP SCREEN, which was well known at the time for its mechanical efficiency, was taken out of service in August 2024. After this long operating period of around a quarter of a century, the separation performance declined, partly due to age and partly due to changes in the wastewater inflow conditions, such as flushing loads and changes in screenings, so that the downstream processes could no longer run optimally. Increased efficiency thanks to modern screening technology The new screening system is a more efficient solution. It is also easier to maintain. Consequently, the STEP SCREEN offered a low financial return. Due to the load it was subjected to, the STEP SCREEN was estimated to have a service life of 15 to 20 years. The regional characteristics near Neunkirchen am Sand already provide an indication of what has also contributed significantly to the wear and tear of the screen. Significant relief for the entire plant The entire plant has been significantly relieved thanks to the new HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT® Ro2, which has decreased the loads in the other areas of the wastewater treatment plant. This is because the new screen's high efficiency makes it much easier to retain and safely remove even the smallest residues from the wastewater stream. This is also reflected in the amount of screenings now being produced. It has doubled compared to the old STEP SCREEN. Structural challenges successfully overcome Initially, there were space-related challenges involved in replacing the system. This was due to the space required for the new screen, which is twice the size of the STEP SCREEN. Instead of 80 cm, 1.6 m was now required, as a wider channel was needed for the system. The conversion, including the removal of the main screen, the installation of the new channel and the reinstallation, was carried out quickly in just four weeks. Precise planning and project management are the keys to success The fact that this challenging conversion, involving the redesign of the entire inlet area and the replacement of the sewage lifting screws, could be completed within this time frame was also made possible by the perfect planning and project management by the commissioned engineering firm Miller from Nuremberg. [...]Westnewton , UK Westnewton WwTW is located close to the Solway Coast and treats a population equivalent of 275. Flows arrive at a terminal pumping station off site and is pumped up to the WwTW for treatment. After treatment flow exits the works into Westnewton Beck. HUBER Technology supplied, installed and commissioned a duty/standby 3 mm 2D inlet screening package also incorporating a handraked bypass channel with a 12 mm bar screen fitted and local control stations to the Contract Delivery Partner (CDP) C2V+. This equipment is located upstream of a Nereda® process specifically designed for smaller works. (Royal HaskoningDHV has developed small (Package) and medium scale (Mini) solutions for 200-2,000 PE and 2,000-5,000 PE respectively, with support from UU and C2V+ United Utilities’ construction design partner.) This scheme sought to use as much equipment delivered in the DfMA (built off sire) format as possible and from HUBER Technology’s perspective, this opened up the opportunity to develop this further with Advance plus and C2V+, the CDP’s for United Utilities. As a result of this together we developed a truly collaborative way of working to reduce costs and improve efficiencies to deliver United Utilities (UU) AMP7 programme. The approach focused on partnership, collaboration, trust that compliment UU AMP7 requirements to outperform against their Company Business Plan (CBP) and benefit all parties. The solution was initially developed on Advance-plus projects at Southwaite and Greystoke WwTW. It was subsequently adopted by C2V+ at Gawsworth WwTW with several other projects in the pipeline. The highlights of this approach are: A £30K (35%) saving in capital cost against a bespoke solution at £80k. An annual ongoing saving of £8,600pa against historical, conventional installations. Utilisation of standard steel products instead of bespoke civil channels – saved £11k – 12% i.e.: Standard off-the shelf designs. Simplified asset standards. Reduced civil construction. DfMA off-site build saved £15k – 18% i.e.: 5 weeks site time saved. Safer assembly. Lower carbon solutions >70% reduction. Less waste. Factory based quality assurance (100%). Less travel and fuel costs. Interface management and out-turn cost certainty. Offsite testing and dry commissioning. Programme and design work saved £4.1k – 5% - Common product specifications and configuration, reduced design turbulence – less iteration i.e.: Estimating – standard estimating blocks.
