[...]We help you to get rid of fat and grease! Grease concentration in wastewater is usually measured by the content of lipophilic substances. A laborious extraction process is necessary to obtain this analytical value from a composite wastewater sample. Grease contained in wastewater is normally present as a dispersed (suspended) fraction. A small portion of the grease is contained as an emulsion, this can be explained by the use of solvents and rinsing liquors. Depending on the type of sewer (length, drop structures, number of pump stations, screens) it is differentiated between a coarse-particle phase (> 1 mm) and fine-particle phase of dispersed grease. Depending on their size and shape the particles can be separated easily, reasonably or only with difficulty in an aerated longitudinal grit trap with grease pocket. A definitive separation rate can however not be quantified, In contrast to the grit trap. Large calm surfaces are positive for efficient grease separation. They permit dispersed particles to slowly rise towards the surface due to their density difference and accumulate without redispersing. This method is practised in conventional longitudinal grit traps with lateral grease pocket with more or less success. On the one hand, a certain flow roll is necessary as grease transport medium. On the other hand, the generated secondary flow roll in the grease trap must not be too strong. With our patented Combi Grit Trap with Hydro Duct flow system we have managed to find a solution to this Sisyphean task. The innovative feature of the Hydro Duct grit trap system, which we presented at IFAT 2005, is the combination of an aerated and unaerated grit trap and thus provides the advantages of both aerated and unaerated grit traps in one plant. Fine bubbles of air are blown into the aerated area and induce a water roll. Organics are well kept floating and dispersed fine particles are floated up at the same time. The particles agglomerate and form a foam layer that moves slowly towards the outlet. The aerated chamber is followed by an unaerated chamber in which laminar flow conditions prevail. Both chambers are separated by a scum board. A high separation rate of > 95% of the grit fraction size 0.20 – 0.25 mm is achieved without problems in this chamber through exactly defined velocities. The relative velocity is set to ensure that the majority of organic particles is still transported out of the grit trap plant along with the wastewater. Due to the large surface in the unaerated chamber all dispersed coarse grease particles rise to the water surface in this chamber and mix with the foam of the aerated chamber. A scum board is installed in front of the outlet to prevent drifting off of the floating matter that accumulates in front of the scum board. From time to time, an integrated automatic grease scraper carries the floating material into a grease chamber (see fig. 2). An eccentric screw pump is installed below the grease chamber and conveys the contents into a separation/grease tank or into a raw sludge chamber. Integrated grit conveying and grit classifying screws dewater the separated grit trap material and transport it towards the discharge where the material is dropped either into a container or an appropriate downstream grit washer. Due to the new large grease trap system in our Hydro Duct type system the separation of dispersed coarse grease particles can be improved significantly. The demand of the market for ever improved separation efficiency and at the same time higher throughput capacities was the incentive for HUBER to develop the HUBER Drum Screen LIQUID. The situation Mechanical pretreatment is required for both municipal and industrial wastewater in order to remove coarse materials and separate floating, settling and suspended solids. Depending on the method of wastewater treatment that is applied, the mechanical pretreatment system must fulfil different requirements in terms of separation efficiency. Special plants which operate according to the MBR principle put the highest demands on the mechanical pretreatment system as all coarse material needs to be removed. A cost-efficient solution must not only achieve the requested separation results, it must also provide high throughput capacities combined with maximum operating reliability. Our solution: HUBER Drum Screen LIQUID The HUBER Drum Screen LIQUID is a machine that is available in different designs and suitable for numerous applications of solids-liquid separation. Depending on the specific application requirements the horizontal drum is covered with a mesh, wedge wire or perforated plate. Function principle The characteristic feature of the HUBER Drum Screen LIQUID is its screen basket which is horizontally installed in the channel or in a tank. The wastewater to be treated flows through the basket from inside to outside. Whilst the wastewater flows through the open front into the screen basket, solids are retained within the drum. A special sealing between the channel and the front-end screen basket opening prevents unscreened wastewater from passing through the screen basket. The solids settling on the drum surface lead to gradual blinding of the surface. As a result, the water level upstream of the screen rises. When the predefined maximum water level has been reached, the screen basket starts to rotate slowly around its axis to clean its surface. At its crown a spray nozzle bar sprays water onto the drum surface from outside to remove the solids and flush them into a trough inside the drum basket from where the screenings are discharged by gravity. The screenings can optionally be pumped to a higher level. The HUBER Wash Press WAP® liquid is available for further treatment of the separated screenings. The wash press dewaters the screenings prior to discharging them into a container. This reduces the load on the sludge treatment system. High pressure cleaning For preventive drum cleaning an innovative automatic high pressure system can be integrated as an option. The spray nozzle head rotates automatically due to the water pressure and moves linearly along the full length of the screen basket to clean the complete basket very efficiently. Water demand and operator attendance are reduced to a minimum. Reliable sealing Every system is only as good as its sealing system in the inlet of the machine. A special PU sealing is therefore integrated in the HUBER Drum Screen LIQUID to ensure that no unscreened wastewater can pass through the screen and constant separation results are reliably met. Maintenance-friendly chain drive The HUBER Drum Screen LIQUID is equipped with a unique self-adjusting bearing unit with a chain drive. The bearing is water-lubricated and made of highly wear-resistant fibre composite material. The bearing can be replaced without dismounting the machine. Technical data The machine is completely made of stainless steel and pickled in an acid bath for optimal corrosion protection and minimised maintenance requirements. [...]Redesign reduces the hazard potential Whether we develop new products or redesign existing machines, we always do this considering also the safety aspects that are important to minimise the hazard potentials when handling our products as required by the Machinery Directive. How important it is to pay special attention to product safety could be seen only last year on a competitor’s solar sewage sludge dryer installation in Bavaria where a tragic accident happened. This was even more reason for us to once again look very thoroughly at our safety systems and further improve them. When we recently redesigned the HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE®, we completely revised the safety system of the entire sewage sludge drying plant. The innovative heart of the solar sewage sludge dryer The HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE® is the innovative heart of the solar sewage sludge dryer and operates in a greenhouse both as a sludge turning and sludge transporting system for the sludge to be dried. Depending on the different specific conditions on site (throughput, air moisture, inside and outside temperature, ...), the especially developed control unit controls the travel and rotation of the HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE®. New feature of the safety concept The new feature of the safety concept is that the access to the operating area of the automatically operating machine is consistently monitored electronically. Whenever somebody walks into this area, the machine will be shut down by the emergency circuit. This prevents severe injury. It was further of great importance for us to ensure that the safety devices cannot be bypassed and will not be perceived as uncomfortable or disturbing. Their new design is therefore still very functional and user-friendly. The entrance area where the wet sludge is fed is equipped with a 3-beam light grid that allows the operator to directly inspect the machine any time without interrupting the operation cycle of the HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE®. Feeding the sludge with a wheel loader is safe and easy. The interface between the man-operated machine (wheel loader) and the automated movement of the sludge turner is controlled by the light grid. The wheel loader can drive directly into the operating area and bring in sludge without having to remove fences or similar installations before. It is at the same time ensured that the HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE ® does not start to move. The rear gates and the maintenance doors are equipped with monitoring sensors. When the doors or gates are opened, the emergency circuit will be interrupted. Signs are additionally mounted at all mechanical entrances to warn of potential hazards. The new safety system will be applied for the first time in the project Denizli in Turkey, the biggest solar sewage sludge drying project by now that will be equipped with HUBER machines. An annual amount of 25,000 t press sludge will be dried on the Denizli site in the future by 8 HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE® units, size 11. The second project where the new safety system will be used is not 2,000 km away like Denizli but only 10 km from the HUBER headquarters, on STP Freystadt. A solar sewage sludge drying plant will be built there, for which HUBER will supply a complete solution.[...]
[...]Novelty – HUBER Sludgecleaner STRAINPRESS® 420 With nearly 1000 produced machines, the HUBER Sludgecleaner STRAINPRESS® 290 is one of the most proven HUBER products. To complement or as an alternative to fine screens installed in channels, the STRAINPRESS® permits the separation of solids even from closed pipeline systems. In contrast to conventional screening systems, the STRAINPRESS® not only separates solid material, it also dewaters the material before discharging it. Typical screen perforations used for screening primary sludge are 3 mm or 5 mm, with the screenings being dewatered to dry substance contents of 35 to 45% already in the discharge of the STRAINPRESS®. To adjust to varying sludge qualities and solids properties, the screw speed and contact pressure of the dewatering unit are regulated automatically according to the pressure conditions and the motor load of the STRAINPRESS®. It is, however, not only the screen perforation that is easily adjustable. The dewatering area can also be adjusted to different screenings properties due to its modular design. The STRAINPRESS® is therefore suitable for coarse screening of biosubstrate as well as for separating fine plastic particle from the fermentation product of biogas plants. With the use of the newly developed size 420 of the HUBER Sludgecleaner STRAINPRESS® presented now, it is possible to separate and dewater up to 2000 l/h screenings with sludge throughputs in excess of 150 m³/h. The new unit size is of course suitable to be integrated into pressure lines completely odour-encased easy to retrofit with screen perforations from 2 mm to 10. All components of the new system size are made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel, as with all other sizes. To minimize wear, the outer edges of the screw shaft are equipped with a replaceable protection on a carbide basis.[...]
[...]Kodersdorf, Germany Kodersdorf in Saxony lies on the River Weißer Schöps and is nestled in a picturesque landscape between the Königshain Mountains and the Upper Lusatian Lakeland, in the immediate vicinity of Görlitz. The sewage treatment plant is located in the industrial estate; its capacity was expanded from 4,500 p.e. to 7,500 p.e. in 2023. The plant operates using aerobic sludge stabilisation. As part of the capacity expansion, a new pre-treatment system was installed, comprising a HUBER Complete Plant ROTAMAT® Ro5 100 and a HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT® Ro2 1000/3. A second sludge storage tank and a HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® 440.2 for stationary sludge dewatering were also installed, creating the conditions for modern sewage sludge drying. Subsequently, the plant was equipped with a solar sludge drying system as a sustainable and future-proof solution. Since its successful commissioning in April 2025, the system has been in continuous operation throughout the first drying season, proving itself to be reliable and stable while delivering consistently excellent results. Premiere of the HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE® FloorRunner The municipality of Kodersdorf installed this new, fully automated plant design, enabling unmanned, autonomous operation. While the plant does require monitoring, adjustment and maintenance, the drying process itself runs entirely without staff. The entire process, from low-viscosity sludge to finished dry granulate, is automated. This significantly reduces the workload for operating staff and makes the Kodersdorf sewage treatment plant particularly future-proof, especially in view of the growing shortage of skilled workers. Details of the process A HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® 440.2 dewaters around 150 tonnes of dry matter annually to approximately 20–23% dry residue. The approximately 730 tonnes of dewatered sewage sludge are then conveyed by a HUBER Screw Conveyor Ro8 TSF to the solar sewage sludge dryer. There, the HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE® FloorRunner takes over; Kodersdorf was the first site to use this newly developed model. The machine spreads the sludge across a 660 m² drying area. The drying hall is a 68 m long, 12 m wide greenhouse structure equipped with controlled fans. Through the combination of gentle sludge turnover by the FloorRunner air turbulence from the fans accumulated heat in the greenhouse and direct sunlight the sludge achieves an annual average dry residue of over 80%. Approximately 550 tonnes of water evaporate in the process each year. This leaves around 180 tonnes of dry granulate with a density of approximately 0.8 kg/l. A HUBER Screw Conveyor Ro8 TSD and a bucket elevator are used for automated sludge discharge. The dry granulate is then distributed into two containers by the elevator. Consistent use of HUBER machinery ensures a perfectly coordinated system. A particular technical advantage is that the FloorRunner can transport sludge in a targeted manner, thus enabling the feed and discharge points to be arranged compactly on the same gable side. This allowed the greenhouse structure to be built right up to the property boundary in a space-saving manner, without the need to construct a rear access road. Proven technology and successful real-world operation The FloorRunner was extensively tested in a prototype plant at HUBER SE’s headquarters prior to its first delivery. All findings from these tests were incorporated into the system design for implementation in Kodersdorf. Representatives from the engineering firm IBOS and the Weißer Schöps/Neiße Administrative Association had the opportunity to observe the system’s functionality and efficiency first-hand in advance. Since commissioning in April 2025, the plant has consistently produced outstanding results in real-world operation. The first full drying season was completed without any significant incidents. The plant is performing exactly as planned, confirming the confidence placed in HUBER’s mature, highly automated technology. Sludge turner now available worldwide Following the successful tests and impressive performance in Kodersdorf, HUBER SE is now offering the HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE® FloorRunner worldwide. Huber passed away suddenly and unexpectedly the night before Saturday, 15th March 2014, at the age of 71. Dr.-Ing. E.h. Hans G. Huber took over the family business from his father in 1967 and has built up the HUBER Group as we know it today. Consistently and with determination he has pushed the company's development into a worldwide leading group on the environmental engineering sector and a supplier of solutions for water and wastewater treatment. After his studies of process engineering at the Technical University of Munich from 1961 to 1967, he took over, together with his brother Karl-Josef, the management of the company Hans Huber GmbH, family-owned for more than 130 years and known as Hans Huber AG from 2003 to 2009 and as HUBER SE since 2009. Owing to the impulses he has constantly given we can be proud on the machines and plants for water treatment we develop, manufacture and sell today. Thanks to his great commitment the HUBER Group has positioned itself as a solution supplier in the field of water treatment, wastewater treatment and sludge treatment. Huber has held numerous honorary posts and has been an active member of a number of national and international organisations. He has received a number of awards which he has always understood also as acknowledgement for the whole company and every single employee. Among the awards he received are the German Environmental Award, the Environmental Medal of the State of Bavaria, the Federal Cross of Merit with Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Bavarian Order of Merit. Furthermore, he has been the spokesman of the Bavarian Environmental Technology Cluster right from the beginning in 2006 when the cluster organisation was founded and recently appointed honorary spokesman. In October 2007, Dr. Huber was awarded the honorary doctorate by the Technical University of Munich due to his outstanding achievements in the field of technical environmental protection. In 2006, he further initiated the foundation of the Huber-Technology-Foundation with the goal to increase the public awareness for the element water and symbolise the idea of sustainability.
