[...]The city of Nuremberg has two sewage treatment plants in the city centre. One is the Nuremberg I STP on Adolf-Braun-Straße and the other is Nuremberg II on Gertrudstraße. Both plants process the wastewater of the city of Nuremberg and rely on HUBER's sustainable and efficient machine technology, particularly for mechanical pre-treatment of the wastewater. At STP I, the screen and grit chamber are from HUBER, and the screening system at StP II is also from HUBER. In the past, HUBER had already supplied several of its WAP® wash presses to the two sewage treatment plants. This provided valuable insights into the process requirements of the plants. Project start at Nuremberg I Sewage Treatment Plant Consequently, HUBER was involved in the planning for the conversion of the Nuremberg I STP by the engineering firm Arnold from Kissing as early as 2016. After winning the tender in 2018 and being awarded the contract, the 3-line conversion was gradually implemented in 2019 during ongoing operations. HUBER machines installed in STP I The following machinery was installed: 3 coarse screens – HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® 6080x1575, 30 mm bar spacing, 2200 l/s maximum flow, incl. HUBER Safety Vision for contaminant detection each 3 fine screens – HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® J 7040x1775, 6 mm bar spacing 9 HUBER Screw Conveyor Ro8 T units, size 355 3 HUBER Screenings Wash Press WAP® 8 S HD units with mechanical high pressure unit each Optimisation of screenings treatment To further optimise screenings treatment and enable automatic filling of the on-site screenings collection containers, three HUBER Tipping Troughs, DN 500, were subsequently installed on the discharge pipes of the screenings wash presses. In addition, HUBER was awarded the contract in 2021 to supply and install two HUBER COANDA Grit Washer RoSF4 size 3-Special, V4A, 40 l/s. Renovation at the Nuremberg II Sewage Treatment Plant After completion of the work at STP I, the next phase of the project was the expansion and renovation of the mechanical pre-treatment stage (screens and screenings treatment) at the Nuremberg II STP. Here too, HUBER won the tender and was delighted to be awarded the contract in 2023 for: 2 coarse screens – HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® 3840x2275, 40 mm bar spacing, 2000 l/s maximum flow, incl. HUBER Safety Vision for contaminant detection each 2 fine screens – HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® J 3840x2275, 6 mm bar spacing 2 HUBER Screw Conveyor Ro8 T units, size 355 4 HUBER Screenings Wash Press WAP® 4 S HD units with high pressure unit each Installation under special conditions The installation at STP II proved to be particularly challenging. Since the large screens could only be installed via the roof and due to the enormous overhang, the installation could only be carried out with a 100-tonne crane. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the operating personnel at the plants. HUBER also benefited from the experienced staff through their constructive and intensive cooperation in the project work described. [...]Villach, Austria For many decades, the coarse screens designed as direct current screens served their purpose in the Villach sewage treatment plant, which has a capacity of 250,000 PE. During rainfall events, it often happened that the resulting amounts of screenings could no longer be conveyed because the single rake was unable to hold them. The reason for this was that the clearing interval lasted more than one minute – a circumstance that led to the accumulation of screenings in front of the screen during a flushing surge, which in turn often resulted in the collapse of the screening system. Two screens with different requirements The requirement was to install two coarse screens with different bar spacings, 8 mm and 12 mm, and two different throughput rates of 1.8 and 5.4 m³/s in two existing channels 5.25 m deep and 2.5 m wide. The HUBER RakeMax® impresses HUBER impressed with the technical features of its Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax®. The client was particularly impressed by the following features: the solid chain made of V4A steel with double breaking load, wider chain links and correspondingly low surface pressure in the joints the wide protective rollers for the large-diameter chain bushings the large chain pitch, which results in fewer joints and thus less chain wear the chain bushings and pins made of duplex steel the ceramic/chilled cast chain sprocket bearings in the lower chain deflection wheels, which had already proven themselves in thousands of grit washers, grit classifiers, screw conveyors and more than 3,000 RakeMax® screens worldwide, as well as in numerous HUBER Belt Screen EscaMax® units, thanks to their extremely high wear resistance. Proven materials and reference projects strengthen confidence For instance, after around 50,000 hours of operation, the lower ceramic/chilled cast iron sprocket bearings of the 3.0 m wide, approximately 1.5 m deep HUBER Belt Screen EscaMax® at the Salzburg wastewater treatment plant were removed. This screen was operated with a large water level difference. Despite having to withstand many times the load of a RakeMax® screen, the bearings showed no significant wear. Being able to provide such references strengthens confidence. Further design features for optimum performance Two further features were: the low hydraulic resistance of the screen bars used by HUBER and their tangle-free spacer mounting halfway up the two-metre-high bar rack. Adjustments for maximum operational efficiency In addition, the RakeMax® coarse screens for this site were designed with three more clearing rakes than is standard manufacturing practice. As the HUBER field service team has been familiar with the RoK installations in the storm water overflows for many years, special attention was paid to high clearing speed and thus low screen clogging. [...]Salzburg, Austria The wastewater treatment plant in Siggerwiesen in the municipality of Bergheim, which borders the city of Salzburg to the north, has been in operation since 1986 and treats approx. 40% of the total wastewater generated in the city and province of Salzburg. The first expansion of the sewage treatment plant took place between 1994 and 1998, followed by further adaptation measures between 2003 and 2004. With a capacity of 680,000 PE60 and a dry weather inflow of 103,600 m³ per day, the Siggerwiesen municipal sewage treatment plant is the largest in the province of Salzburg. The catchment area of the sewage board Reinhalteverband RHV Großraum Salzburg covers a total area of 185 km² in twelve member municipalities. The wastewater is channelled to the sewage treatment plant via 567 km of local networks and 143 km of collectors. The inflow volume from the sewer network with a 70% mixed system changes proportionally with the amount of precipitation over the course of the year. Four screen generations Circulation screens were installed when the wastewater treatment plant was built; the second generation (approx. 1995 to 2009) were step screens with a bar spacing of 5 mm. In 2009, perforated plate circulation screens with a diameter of 6 mm were installed (2009 to 2023). The fourth generation now consists of two HUBER ROTAMAT ® Ro2 2600 XL screens with 3 mm bar spacing, the largest screens in southern Germany/Austria. The general conditions: Maximum inflow per line 2000 l/s Two 3 m wide channels Channel depth 2.45 m Under discussion were revolving chain screens with 2.5 or 3 mm bar spacing or the HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT ® Ro2 2600 XL with 3 mm bar spacing. At first, the screen did not seem to be the machine of choice because it caused higher investment costs than a chain screen. However, performance data, calculations and their detailed comparison as well as international references caused the price to recede into the background as a criterion. Mechanical process engineering The main difference between the ROTAMAT ® screen and screening systems with a flat bar screen with rake or scraper bar is, on the one hand, the size of the area through which the screen flows and, on the other, the clearing speed. Compared to a rectangular bar rack with an installation angle of 55°, the flow area of the Ro2 screen is significantly increased. This is due to the flatter installation angle of 30 degrees of the screen and the cylindrical shape of the screen basket. In addition, the rotating drum offers a significantly higher speed for cleaning the screen surface compared to other screens. A third major advantage of the ROTAMAT ® screen is the way in which the screenings are removed. While chain screens with scraper bars set the screenings in motion, this is not the case with systems such as the previously installed perforated plate screen or the screens that are now installed. This is the reason for the high separation performance. In combination with the high clearing speed, this leads to a lower upstream head, less grit deposits in the channel and reduced operating hours. This can also be seen at the Siggerwiesen wastewater treatment plant. The operating hours there have been reduced by 60% since the screens were installed. Raw screenings volume The diagram below shows the amount of screenings produced by different types of wedge wire screens. It can be seen that, for example, with a bar spacing of 3 mm, rotating drum screens generate significantly more screenings than wedge wire screens with scraper bars, which push rollers of screenings over a bar rack, or step screens, which set the retained screenings below the waterline in motion over the entire surface. The high separation efficiency is also due to the fact that the direction in which the screenings are detached from the screen surface and discharged (from outside to inside) is opposite to the direction of wastewater flow (from inside to outside). As a result, fibres that are already hanging through the slotted screen behind the screening surface are conveyed by the cleaning system (water or air) back in front of the screening surface and thus back into the screenings removal process. Any solid matter that does not enter the wastewater treatment plant minimises clogging and increases operational safety. The operational and technical managers of the Salzburg wastewater treatment plant followed this idea. The previously installed perforated plate screens with a 6 mm hole diameter already had a very good separation performance as they also did not move the screenings on the screen surface. With the installation of HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT ® Ro2 units with 3 mm wedge wire, the monthly production of dewatered screenings increased further from 140 to 160 tonnes. Behaviour during flushing surge The cleaning speed of the drum screen makes the ROTAMAT ® Ro2 screen insensitive to changes in the load, e.g. in case of flushing surges during rain events or during the final phase of emptying stormwater retention basins. Wear and screen surface cleaning The ROTAMAT ® Ro2 screen has no chain joints, sprocket bearings, bar rack surfaces, scrapers, etc. that can wear out. There is no wear on the screening surface because the screened material is not moved on it. The machine has a single bearing point: the so-called "foot bearing", which supports the weight of the rotating parts of the worm shaft and screen drum. Screen surface cleaning Efficient screen surface cleaning on these two HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT ® Ro2 units is achieved by three screen surface cleaning systems: Water spray nozzle bar with a pressure of 5 bar effectively at the nozzles (standard, here as backup) Air jet cleaning for cleaning the screen without using water High-pressure cleaning with 120 bar working pressure for intensive basic cleaning after every 3 hours of operation Summary The two screens discharge washed and dewatered screenings into the two downstream spiral conveyors. A screw conveyor transports the screenings into the container room, where they are transported fully automatically from an existing distribution system into three large-capacity containers. The installation in Salzburg shows that the HUBER ROTAMAT ® Ro2 screen is superior to other screening systems when considering criteria such as separation performance, combined screenings treatment, service life, maintenance intervals, spare parts requirements, in short the lifecycle costs. The reliability of the ROTAMAT ® Ro2 screen must also be taken into account. Of the large ROTAMAT ® Ro2 screens in Austria, the plant in St. Jakob in Defereggen (East Tyrol), size 1500 with 3 mm gap width, is the oldest. It has been in operation since 1992 – a working life long.[...]

Even Berching's First Mayor Ludwig Eisenreich did not miss the opportunity, came to see for himself and exchanged views with Dr. Oliver Rong (Director Engineering & Production, Deputy CEO of HUBER SE) and Human Resources Manager Michael Hiller, among others. HUBER had a lot to offer for the visitors' entertainment: among other things, plant tours through the production halls, a visit to the HUBER Forum, as well as a colourful programme with food and drinks, water zorbing, a bouncy castle and a raffle. [...]Passau, Germany Since 1 June 2006, the Passau wastewater treatment plant and HUBER SE have been linked by a continuous, trusting and successful service partnership. Over the course of two decades, numerous HUBER‑systems have been reliably serviced, maintained and technically upgraded – a milestone that impressively underlines the importance of professional manufacturer maintenance. The Passau wastewater treatment plant, designed for 110,000 population equivalents and operated by a dedicated team of ten staff members, has relied on HUBER‑technology for many years. In conversation with Judith Friedlmeier, plant manager at the sewage treatment works, and Thomas Nigl, mechanical team leader, it became clear why the HUBER service and maintenance contract has been an integral part of the plant’s operations since 2006. Nigl describes the period before the contract was signed as follows: '“Initially, the machinery was operated according to the ‘fire brigade principle’. In other words, we would only put out the fire once it had started. But that is not a forward-looking approach and does not preserve assets.” With the signing of the maintenance contract, reactive fault rectification gave way to a consistently preventative maintenance approach: “Don’t wait until there’s a fire – make sure there isn’t one in the first place.” Since then, operational reliability has increased significantly: “Since signing the HUBER service and maintenance contract, there have been no further significant downtimes,” says Thomas Nigl. [...]Sharjah, UAE Population growth in Dubai and adjacent Sharjah is a consequence of rapid development. Population growth, enforced growing wealth and luxury, generate great strain on the infrastructure of these cities. All existing wastewater treatment plants are heavily overloaded. Several treatment plants are presently in the process of becoming extended and upgraded, but even when the construction and installation will be finished, the plants will hardly be able to treat the enormous and ever growing wastewater flows. Because of freshwater scarcity in this arid region, treated wastewater is viewed and reused as a valuable resource. In the Emirates, great portions of the treated effluents are reused for irrigation of parks and palm trees. For some time the United Arab Emirates have been evolving as a heaven for golf players. For example, the prestigious Sherjah Golf & Shooting Club was opened in 2005, though its golf course is not yet entirely completed. Water for the irrigation of this golf course is supplied from the largest wastewater treatment plant of the Emirate Sharjah, the Sharjah Main Sewage Treatment Plant (MSTP). Some of the treated effluent is supplied to the Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club via the Al Sweihat pump station. The supplied water is then distributed through an underground pipe network. The Sharjah MSTP was originally designed for a capacity of 80,000 m³/d (21 MGD). The actual inflow is around 162,000 m³/d (43 MGD). The plant is by 100 % overloaded. The secondary clarifiers are no longer able to retain the activated sludge and the final effluent contains a high concentration of suspended solids. This leads to frequent clogging of the irrigation nozzles at the golf course, some times enormous odour nuisance, and even to the formation of sludge ponds on the green. This prompted the management of the golf course to intervene and demand a fast solution of these problems from the Sharjah Drainage Section. The management of the Sharjah Drainage Section approached our local subsidiary, HUBER TECHNOLOGY MIDDLE-EAST, asked for our help and the proposal of viable solutions. It was rather obvious that our relatively “new” product, RoDisc® micro-strainer, could solve the problems. During several meetings with the management of the Sharjah Drainage Section and their consulting engineers we explained the simple and reliable operation of our micro-strainers. We could convince the decision makers that our RoDisc® filters would be ideally suited for their application. The tender was published in August 2006. HUBER RoDisc® Filters were specified as base of the bid, and sand filters were specified as a possible alternate in the tender documents. Technical data and guaranteed performance are shown in the following table. Based on these data we offered two units of our RoDisc® size 20, equipped with a 10 micron mesh. We submitted our proposal by the end of August and on November 8, 2006 we received the order for the “provision of polishers / secondary filters at the Al Sweihat pumping station”. Decisive for the customer’s decision to award this contract to HUBER was the comparison of our RoDisc® filters with sand filters: our filters are far more compact and easier to operate. A special challenge by this project was that HUBER TECHNOLOGY MIDDLE-EAST was not only responsible for supply and installation of the mechanical equipment, but had to assume all responsibilities of a main contractor. This meant that our subsidiary also had to plan and coordinate all work including earthwork, construction and pipe installation. Another challenge was presented by the fact that the entire project had to be finished within a period of six months. The deadline was May 15, 2007 – on this day the two RoDisc® were required to turn and operate successfully. Operation and maintenance of the system over a one year period after start-up were also included in the contract. Other challenges during construction and installation were a consequence of the confined space at the pump station and of the fact that the pump station is located in a preferred residential neighbourhood. For this reason construction and installation work was subject to stringent constraints. Construction work finally commenced during January, 2007. We decided to install each RoDisc® unit in a concrete tank and to bury these tanks up to two thirds of their height below ground. In this way we could comply with the requirement that neither the filters nor their containers may be visible from the neighbourhood. On the other hand, with this design, we could guarantee easy access for operation and maintenance. The wire mesh on the filter discs are washed with spray water that is supplied from the filter tank to each filter by two high-pressure pumps. The RoDisc® units were shipped in mid March 2007 and were installed into their tanks in early May. Commissioning took place on May 21 and was attended and supervised by representatives of the Sharjah Drainage Section. The RoDisc® Filters have now been in operation for almost an entire year and show excellent performance. The only problem for their operation is that the fed wastewater has solids concentrations that are continuously far above the limits that were specified in the tender documents. Suspended solids concentrations between 200 and 300 mg/l (ppm) are common and peak concentrations of up to 750 mg/l occur. We also had to discover that hair and fibre materials pass almost uninhibited through the entire treatment plant and constitute an additional load on the mesh of our RoDisc® filters. This much higher than specified solids load leads to elevated head loss through the filter mesh, high pressure thereon and a reduced hydraulic filtration capacity. However, in spite of these adverse conditions, the effluent quality of our RoDisc ®filters is excellent. The remaining suspended solids concentration in their effluent is between 10 and 20 mg/l. The managements of the Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club and of the Sharjah Drainage Section are both very happy with operation and performance of our RoDisc® filters. Conclusion: With these first two RoDisc® micro-strainers that we sold and installed at the Arab Golf, we could impressively demonstrate their outstanding performance in respect to capacity and effluent quality – not only during demonstrations and pilot tests, but in the field, under extremely difficult conditions. RoDisc® micro-strainers are very effective and efficient for this type of application, i.e. for straining the effluent of hydraulically overloaded wastewater treatment plants. The need for such post-treatment becomes ever more common, as existing wastewater treatment plants become overloaded, or effluent requirements become more stringent. Our RoDisc® filters are ideal solutions for such challenges. Particularly in arid and booming regions suffering from freshwater shortage, such as in the Middle East, wastewater is a valuable resource. Our RoDisc® micro-strainers guarantee consistently low suspended solids concentrations in wastewater treatment plant effluents.[...]
[...]Bickenbach and Uhldingen, Germany How can a fourth treatment stage be optimally integrated or retrofitted, taking into account all individual requirements and boundary conditions? This is a question that many municipalities, operators and wastewater associations will soon be asking themselves. In Bickenbach (Hesse) and Uhldingen (Baden-Württemberg), they are already one step ahead. Those responsible there have already taken action and assumed an important pioneering role with the start of large-scale implementation. Bickenbach STP Hesse’s first quaternary treatment stage In Bickenbach, the official groundbreaking ceremony for what will probably be Hesse's first fourth treatment stage took place in spring 2022. The future plant will consist of an ozonation unit with a downstream four-line adsorption stage and an upstream two-line cloth filtration system. Sixteen HUBER Activated Carbon Filter CONTIFLOW® GAK and two HUBER Pile Cloth Media Filter RotaFilt® units will be used for primary treatment of the wastewater. The ozone reactor will be equipped with the proven HUBER Pressure-Tight Door TT7 and two high-quality HUBER Manhole Covers SD5. Commissioning of the plant is scheduled for spring 2024. Thus, the Bickenbach WWTP will make an important contribution to the protection of the Hessian Marsh, which is the largest groundwater reservoir in Germany and provides drinking water for about two million people in the Rhine-Main area. Uhldingen-Mühlhofen WWTP: 24 HUBER Active Carbon Filter CONTIFLOW® GAK The combination of ozonation and activated carbon filtration is also applied at the Uhldingen-Mühlhofen wastewater treatment plant – on a technical scale as large as never before installed in Baden-Württemberg. HUBER supplies the activated carbon stage with a total of 24 HUBER Activated Carbon Filter CONTIFLOW® GAK for biological post-filtration and adsorption. The installation of the activated carbon filters was successfully completed this summer. Commissioning of the 7.4 million euro project is planned for 2023. Then, persistent and hazardous trace substances such as pharmaceutical residues, hormones and flame retardants will be reliably separated before they enter Lake Überlingen. This part of Lake Constance supplies around four million people in large parts of Baden-Württemberg with about 135 million m³ of drinking water annually.[...]
[...]Regen, Germany The town Regen in the administrative district of Lower Bavaria, is also known as a climatic health resort and boasts numerous sights, buildings and natural monuments. Regular events include the annual Pichelsteiner Festival. Named after a traditional dish, it has grown to become the largest festival in the Bavarian Forest and a major attraction in the region. This makes it all the more important to have a fully functional 24-hour wastewater treatment plant, such as the Regen STP, in place for every event. Energy-efficient and powerful sludge dewatering The outdated and energy-intensive chamber filter press was replaced with an energy-efficient and powerful sludge dewatering system. The main focus of the new dewatering system was the energy and disposal costs of the sludge to be dewatered. After visiting numerous plants on the market, the Regen wastewater treatment plant opted for the screw press principle. The decision was made due to its low specific power consumption and maintenance costs, as well as the very high degree of dewatering achieved in continuous operation. The low speed and specific connected load also appeared to be important factors and were included in the decision-making process as they are sustainable and highly efficient. Tender In 2023, two sludge dewatering plants featuring a fully automatic container filling system were put out to tender. The tender also specified the entire pump technology, polymer preparation, switchgear, control system, and all other components required for fully automatic dewatering operation. Contract awarded to HUBER SE The decisive advantages – high discharge dry solids content, complete stainless steel construction (rather than a cheap mixed construction), minimal operating costs and trouble-free, unattended 24-hour operation – tipped the scales in favour of HUBER SE being awarded the contract. The following components were implemented by HUBER following the order placed at the end of 2023: 2 HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® 440.2 Pump technology with flocculant preparation and piping Automatic conveyor technology with sludge distribution, including full fill control and level monitoring Electrical control system Delivery, installation, commissioning, process training Implementation Following the construction kick-off meeting, an intensive planning phase was followed by the implementation of an optimal process solution and its integration into the existing structure in mid-2024, in line with the ideas of the operator and the engineering firm. The guaranteed values have been far exceeded Since commissioning in August 2024, the resulting digested sludge with 3–3.5% dry matter and 51–54% loss on ignition has been dewatered to over 32–35% dry matter. [...]Shanghai, China A total of twelve HUBER Fine Screens ROTAMAT® Ro1/2600 were supplied for the second construction phase of WWTP Zhuyu There is hardly another city worldwide that is growing with such a breath-taking speed as Shanghai, China’s boom town. But such rapid growth comes at a high price. Shanghai’s infrastructure can hardly cope. It happens time and again that the power stations can not supply enough electricity, or that even the 12 lane main highway is jammed to a stand-still. Of course, sewers and treatment plants are also under strain and the city administration is doing its best to keep up. Seven years ago we supplied a pair of ROTAMAT® Fine Screen units Ro1 with a screen basket diameter of 2.6 m for the Bai Long Gang wastewater treatment plant, serving a high-tech industrial park in the city district Pudong. Our screens proved their excellent performance and reliability, which is particularly important for mechanical wastewater pre-treatment. Because of this excellent reference installation, Ro1 fine screens were also selected for the first construction phase of the plant Zhuyuan in 2003 and four Ro1 screens with a screen basket diameter of 2.2 m were ordered and installed. Only three years later the second construction phase began. This time we received an order for twelve ROTAMAT® Ro1 fine screens, again with a 2.6 m diameter, the same size as supplied seven years earlier. They can handle a 500,000 m³/d wastewater flow. However, this time we supplied twelve ROTAMAT® Ro1 screens of an improved version that maintains all its excellent features, but is less expensive to manufacture. [...]Over 100 completed orders, a total of almost 300 machines in operation in 22 different countries and yet there are still applications where there is a need for a trial. "Trial makes perfect", be it on municipal wastewater treatment plants or for special industrial sludge, the spectrum is diverse. For this purpose, HUBER provides a trial unit of the Sludge Turner SOLSTICE ® , called "HUBER Baby SOLSTICE ® ", on a reduced scale. In the field for over 10 years The trial unit has now been in operation for over 10 years. After trials in Germany, the plant was mainly used in South America. Since its return at the beginning of the year, it has already made stopovers in the south of France and Italy. Simplicity and technical sophistication The trial unit is characterised by its simplicity while at the same time integrating a large number of technical refinements. Transport in a standard 20' container enables fast and cost-effective delivery both by lorry and ship. Once removed from the container, installation and commissioning can be completed in less than two days by a HUBER service technician. HUBER recommends a test period of four to six weeks. During this time, two to three full runs of sludge drying can be carried out, depending on the weather conditions and the test objective. The fully automatic control system with integrated remote access monitors the drying process by measuring the weight loss, documents exhaust air data (in particular the ammonia values) and controls the drying process depending on the weather data. In areas with less favourable climatic conditions, tests can also be carried out with floor heating switched on. The effort required on site is kept to a minimum. The operator helps to set up and dismantle the system and supervises the trials independently during the test period. A dedicated telephone hotline is available to the operator for questions and optimisations. On completion of the trials, the operator receives a complete data set of the test results and a final report.
