The task of such a plant is to filter rainwater that runs off roads before it is discharged into a body of water or into the ground. Road run-off is stormwater containing coarser solids such as gravel, sand and litter, as well as significant amounts of finer solids such as abrasion from car tyres (microplastics). Road wastewater occurs whenever it rains, and its quantity depends on the amount of rainfall. Technology for Road Wastewater Treatment Plants Intermediate storage and filter system A road run-off treatment plant is characterised by two main features: a basin for intermediate storage and a filter system. Since such a plant cannot be designed to cope with very rarely occurring but extremely high rainfall volumes, an overflow is also provided for relief in the event of excessive amounts of water. The treatment plants for road run-off can be distinguished into natural plants and technical systems. The filter system of a natural treatment plant consists of a soil filter. The technical road run-off treatment plant as a space-saving solution The technical system uses space-saving machine technology for filtration instead of a soil filter. After the official welcome, the participants were given a plant tour including a company presentation. The excursion was aimed at trainees for wastewater technology, water supply or pipe, sewer and industrial technology, (waste) water engineers, students and graduates or young professionals up to 35 years of age. Many new impressions and exclusive insights into a worldwide leading company in the water industry impressed the young water management professionals. [...]Luzern, Switzerland Due to the increasing building density, cities are generally faced with the problem of lesser and lesser infiltration of rainwater water during storm events and the associated increasing risk of overflowing local sewers. Moreover, road runoff water contains not only grit and gravel but also considerable amounts of eco-toxicologically relevant substances from tyre wear and tar residues, for example heavy metals, such as cadmium, zinc and lead, as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAH] and petroleum-derived hydrocarbons [PDH]. During rainfalls, the abrasion particles from road surfaces are washed directly into surface waters or the combined sewer system. Compared to the continuously generated residential wastewater, road runoff is on average generated only during 5% of the time and in varying intensity. Suddenly occurring storm events generate massive concentrations in the road runoff. The environmentally sound treatment of road-run offs is still an unsolved problem. A water safety regulation for the treatment of wastewater from highly frequented roads has been developed in Switzerland especially for this application. It is generally differentiated between two types of road runoff treatment systems. Due to the extensive sealing of surfaces, the runoff of precipitation water cannot be ensured anymore with retention soil filters on a natural runoff treatment plant but is treated in a so-called technical road runoff treatment systems. To meet the requirements of a technical road runoff treatment systems, HUBER SE has modified its HUBER Disc Filter RoDisc ® especially for this application. Since the end of 2015, two of these treatment plants have been operated in the Lucerne area. The plants "Seetalplatz" and "Frohburg" are designed for a road catchment area of 3.2 hectares and 2.1 hectares. The roads in the catchment area of Seetalplatz are frequented by about 50,000 vehicles per day. An important point during the project engineering phase was the careful consideration of the course of the roads. On winding roads, the concentration of wear particles from road covers and tarred surfaces is significantly increased. The road runoff treatment plant consists of several treatment stages. The road runoff flows through a line network to the treatment plant, preferably by gravity if possible. Settleable solids, such as grit and gravel, settle in the preceding coarse material separator due to difference in density. The wastewater flows then into a settling tank where the finer suspended particles settle and are removed at intervals via the sludge. In the last treatment stage, the pre-treated wastewater with a volume flow of 30 l/s is directed to the HUBER Disc Filter RoDisc ® prior to being discharged for infiltration or to a water course. The efficiency of road runoff treatment plants is categorized according to the solids and heavy metal reduction they achieve. As to solids, a separation efficiency in excess of 85% is reliably achieved, and more than 60% of the heavy metals (measured with zinc and copper) are reliable removed. The decisive advantages of HUBER disc filter plants lie in the absolute surface filtration and intensity of filter cloth cleaning. These are two indispensable factors as both tar and tyre abrasion particles have a high tendency to irreversible adhesion. Washing the raw materials also causes a lot of grit to get into the wastewater. The wastewater is usually highly discoloured and contains high BOD and COD loads, so heavy pollution charges have to be paid. It is therefore economical to reduce these loads on site to such a degree that the wastewater can be discharged to the public sewer system or even directly into a water course without having to pay fees for heavy pollution. While small plants only have to separate solids, larger facilities also reduce the COD and BOD loads. Due to the large water consumption, it is often economical to treat the wastewater so well that it can be recirculated as process water. HUBER products and solutions for your requirements HUBER Complete Plant ROTAMAT® Ro5 units are used for mechanical pre-treatment of process water or wastewater. This type of plant screens out larger solids and separates settleable materials such as grit in the integrated grit chamber. The separated grit can be cleaned from organic contaminants in a downstream HUBER Grit Washer . The pre-cleaned water can then be further treated with a HUBER Fine Screen to remove fine fibres and hair. [...]Aylesbury STW, UK Huber Technology has been awarded a contract to supply the RoDisc® filter to Thames Water. The project is part of a Thames Water Amp 5 scheme to improve tertiary treatment at Aylesbury STW. The project is to allow for population growth, part of which is to increase the tertiary treatment capacity. Following successful award onto Thames Water framework for the supply of this equipment in October 2011, we were then approached by Black & Veatch to provide the equipment. Additional capacity has been added to ensure that the increased flows can be treated and 3 x HUBER Disc Filter RoDisc® size 22 were selected for the duty. The project was ordered following detailed discussions in May 2012 and has now been delivered to site in October 2012. The plant is due for commissioning and operation in early 2013.[...]

[...]Grand Rapids, MI USA An alternative for ageing scraper bridges. They work constantly, know no weekends and are exposed to wind and rain. They are familiar with wear and corrosion and are grateful for a few drops of lubricating oil. We are talking about the scraper bridges of grit channels. When the ravages of time take their toll At some point, after what feels like two sewage works operator’s lifetimes, the time comes when this ‘vehicle’ is no longer fit for purpose. The concrete of the grit channel could certainly withstand the same amount of time again, but the machinery has had its day. Complicated replacement Now good advice is hard to come by, because replacing an old bridge scraper is difficult due to availability and price. In addition, these systems, whether blade or suction scrapers, have the negative habit of causing problems with the submerged ‘transfer’ device (blade/pump). Excessive running times are the consequence if you want to avoid clogged pumps. Efficient solution: HUBER Grit Trap GritWolf® A good solution in case X is the underwater scraper of the HUBER GritWolf® The scraping unit consists of a horizontal screw conveyor that transports the grit separated in the grit channel towards the grit pump. Due to the low speed, the grit is evenly dosed into the inlet area of the pump, which in turn benefits from low wear and reliable operation. If flushing surges cause large amounts of grit to accumulate in the grit channel for a short period of time, the screw reliably works through the pile without increasing the running time. More power with lamella packs Ageing grit chambers with insufficient grit separation due to increased wastewater volumes can be retrofitted with additional lamella packs from the HUBER GritWolf®. The lamellae provide more settling surface for the grit, so that even ‘undersized’ grit channels can achieve satisfactory grit separation. Energy savings The use of lamellae eliminates the need for grit channel aeration, thereby removing a major energy guzzler and contributing to the energy self-sufficiency of a sewage treatment plant. Air, the greatest enemy of fine grit separation, is successfully shown the ‘red card’. The grit trap material becomes finer-grained and the proportion of organic matter also increases. A well-functioning grit washing plant is the right answer to this mixture of solids. Targeted removal of floating matter When the air is turned off, floating and grease-like matter collects on the surface of the grit chamber and is transported to the end of the chamber by the flow. There, it can be retained by a baffle plate and removed in a targeted manner by the grease removal paddle of the HUBER GritWolf® and sent for recycling. Sustainable grit chamber technology In summary, the use of GritWolf® components simplifies grit removal, improves grit separation and ensures the safe removal of floating matter. As there is no more scraper bridge or ventilation, the entire grit chamber can be covered, putting an end to annoying odour emissions.[...]

In the course of its almost 20-year success story, the RakeMax ® has become the flagship among screening systems. The HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax ® , firmly established in the market and first presented to the public at the International Trade Fair for Sewage Technology IFAT 2005, has meanwhile proven itself more than three thousand times on the worldwide market of wastewater technology due to its versatile application possibilities. HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® HF In the course of continuous development, another innovative screen type based on the successful RakeMax® was already developed in 2010 in the field of influent screening: the cranked version of the multi-rake bar screen called RakeMax ® HF (High Flow). This screen version consists of a flat and therefore hydraulically very advantageous bottom screening section with a subsequent transition into a steep conveying section. Here, the positive characteristics of the proven RakeMax® – reliable solids separation and high screenings discharge capacity – are combined with low hydraulic screen loss due to a large and effective bar rack surface of the screen. Due to the extremely flat inclination of the bar rack of 30°, the screen section through which the flow passes is always double the depth of the approaching flow. HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® J The HUBER RakeMax® J is also a modified variant of the proven Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax®. In contrast to the standard version, the screen bars of the RakeMax® J are not straight, but curved towards the bottom of the channel. The additional designation “J” is also derived from the shape of the bar rack, as the contour of the screen bars resembles the silhouette of this letter. The screen rake moves along the curvature of the screen bars and describes a segment of a circle in this section. The flat inclination of the rake bars directly in the bottom area results in an overall larger cross-section of the screen through which the flow passes, which leads to lower hydraulic losses as well as to a reduction of the flow velocity in the gaps between the screen bars. For the manufacture of the semi-circular curved screen bars, HUBER uses its many years of experience in the production and use of screens with curved screen bars, such as the well proven HUBER Fine Screen ROTAMAT® Ro1. In this screen system, the curved bar rack is reliably cleaned in a comparable way by the screen cleaner rake with corresponding meshing teeth. With the two variants RakeMax® HF and RakeMax® J described above, disturbing deposits can already be absorbed by the rakes in the lower screen area thanks to the special design. This further optimises the functionality and ease of maintenance of the multi-rake bar screen.
