[...]Treat and reuse process water and waste water Water reuse makes it possible to use water in cycles. This reduces both the consumption of fresh water and the amount of wastewater produced. Water recycling and reuse in industry in the context of "ZLD - Zero Liquid Discharge" plays an important role with regard to the economical use of water as a resource. The importance of irrigating agricultural land with treated municipal wastewater is also widespread in many countries, especially those with less rainfall, and will continue to increase due to climate change and the need for a sustainable "circular economy". The treatment of water with the aim of reuse is carried out by a combination of different process steps, which must be adapted to the specific situation. Here, the quality of the contaminated water as well as the requirements for the treated water play the decisive role. HUBER has a comprehensive portfolio of products and technologies and is therefore able to develop and provide the necessary processes for a customised water reuse solution. HUBER process modules for water reuse Removal of coarse and fine solids: HUBER screens and screening plants reliably remove all types of larger and smaller solids, thus creating the preconditions for reliable implementation of further treatment steps. Grit removal: For the separation of grit or mineral constituents HUBER Grit Traps are used. Removal of dissolved and undissolved substances: The HUBER Dissolved Air Flotation Plant HDF is a chemical-physical process technology that can separate both dissolved and undissolved substances to a very large extent using suitable precipitants and flocculants. Separation of finest solids: For the removal of very fine solids and particles, HUBER offers various micro screens and filters for screening, sand filtration, cloth filtration and activated carbon adsorption.[...]
[...]The HUBER Technology Foundation supports Shepherd Pido and Jakob Reinhard of the organisation Technik ohne Grenzen (Technology without Borders, Germany): making the local public aware of the issue water and the water cycle is one of the keys to sustainability and success. Numerous water well projects have been implemented but in many cases it happens that the successful completion of the project is documented with some nice photos for the donators and all parties involved before much of the project is forgotten after some years. This is also the reason why an estimated $300 million have got "lost" in water well construction. A study has shown that some water wells, for example in Ghana, are still functional, even after 20 years. Instead of just drilling for water the organisations have created the necessary structures and the people's awareness for water and its circulation. The project in Owumunam has therefore a strong focus on interdisciplinarity. Even if the technical engineering approach is also important, it is not the major part of this project. In this case, it is mainly about to provide the people living there with the necessary knowledge – about the value and economical use of water on the one hand, and about the social structures required to maintain the well for a long time on the other hand. This is the only way to guarantee sustainability. The village has made the first step and shown that they are willing to follow this way by starting to collect money for a maintenance and repair fond. By the cooperation between the German regional groups of Technik ohne Grenzen in Munich and Cape Coast in Ghana, the two students Shepherd Pido and Jakob Reinhard together with their project team are intensively collaborating across cultural barriers. Their sometimes different views on the topic broadens the perspectives of both and helps them find the best possible solution. The main focus is on developing a maintenance and repair workshop to sensitise the local people for the issue and thus ensure the safe and reliable water supply for the village in the long term. All the best wishes from the HUBER Technology Foundation for the successful completion of the project! We will support the two students with a donation.[...]

[...]Identification of the ideal time for screw shaft maintenance Maintenance of the HUBER Wash Press WAP® as and when required Sensor with signal LED on the HUBER Wash Press WAP® Also for retrofitting to the HUBER Wash Press WAP® The aim of the HUBER Wash Press wear detection system is to enable a preventive maintenance strategy. The system detects a threshold value in the diameter loss of the compacting screw in the closed compaction zone section of the wash press. This part of the compacting screw is usually the machine component subject to the most wear. At the same time, however, it is difficult to control. If increasing screw wear is detected, the operator is informed via a warning message in the machine control. Maintenance can now be planned in time and an unforeseen machine failure can thus be prevented. Benefits The user’s benefits Preventive maintenance strategy Avoid unplanned machine downtime Reduce service effort and costs With the exception of the smallest model, every version of the HUBER Wash Press WAP® will be equipped with the HUBER Wear Detection system in future. In addition, the HUBER Wear Detection system can be retrofitted to any HUBER Wash Press WAP®. The intensity of wear is significantly influenced by several factors Dry residue content of the screenings compacted and discharged: The force required for dewatering increases exponentially with the degree of dewatering of the screenings. The more highly dewatered the screenings are, the more intensive the wear. Grit, stones and debris in the screenings: large and small mineral components of the screenings act like sandpaper. Even small, but permanently present amounts of grit or debris components in the screenings have a negative effect on the service life of the screw. Especially in combination with high DR contents, this results in significant losses in service life. Unnecessary machine operation: If a wash press is operated without screenings, the last helical flights of the screw will also be emptied. The screw can then evade the compaction pressure and rubs against the conveying bars, which leads to additional wear and tear on the machine. The pictures below show screw shafts in new condition, beginning to wear and with advanced wear (left to right). 1 2[...]

[...]Septic sludge of around 70,000 inhabitants is collected in the surrounding area of the city of Lahti. Twelve different companies haul septic sludge. To prevent that they dump septic sludge into sewers or on wasteland, the city was looking for a place and method of treatment. The city selected a HUBER system for septic sludge receiving and pre-treatment at their existing central wastewater treatment plant. A card reader and flow meter permit data collection and billing. The incoming septic sludge is screened and the screenings, together with those from their existing wastewater screens, are intensively washed, dewatered and compacted in our super-launder wash-press WAP® SL. In comparison with their former piston press, our unit reduces their screenings mass to 25%. The town Lahti is located about 60 km to the north-east of the capital Helsinki. The city and its surrounding area have a population of around 120,000. Only the urban area is connected through sewers to the central Ali-Juhakkala wastewater treatment plant that is design for a total population of 50,000. Septic tanks are commonly provided in suburban and rural areas. Municipal authorities were searching for a way and place to treat the septic sludge that is collected by ten hauling companies. They wanted to prevent that septic sludge is dumped into sewers or, even worse, on some wasteland. They determined that the Ali-Juhakkala plant has sufficient capacity to treat the septic sludge. However, dumping the septic sludge into their inlet structure was not acceptable because the plant operators had problems with their existing screenings handling system of their inlet screens. Our proposed HUBER solution could kill several birds with on stone. We suggested installation of our septage receiving station ROTAMAT® Ro 3, which is essentially a tank-mounted Ro 1 fine screen with a bar spacing of 6 mm, to remove debris from the septic sludge. The screenings are washed a first time in the screens integrated screenings wash system IRGA. A flow meter measures the sludge volume discharged by each hauler and a card reader serves for identification, so that the haulers can be charged properly. We also offered covered Ro8 T screw conveyors for moving the screenings, not only from the septage receiving station, but also from the plant’s inlet screens, to a common super-launder wash-press WAP® SL. This unit reduces the screenings’ mass to a minimum by intensive washing and compaction. Since all equipment is enclosed, odour emissions are minimized. The city’s staff and consultants were convinced that our proposed solution works best and issued their purchase orders. Our system was installed and commissioned, and it works perfectly. The rugged fine screen ROTAMAT® Ro1 of the septage receiving station remains unaffected by debris, gravel and grease. In the WAP® SL batches of screenings and wash water are intensively agitated by an open pump impeller that is mounted on the wall of the launder tank. After each washing cycle, the wash water containing almost all faecals and most of the COD is drained to the plant. The washed screenings, consisting mostly of fibrous material, are dewatered and compacted on their way through the unit’s pressure pipe. In comparison to their former piston-press, our WAP/SL reduces the screenings’ mass to about 25 %. After our complete success in Lahti other Finish cities also selected HUBER solutions for their septic sludge and screenings handling problems.[...]
