[...]Scientists, planners and plant operators met to discuss the challenges of sewage sludge disposal on 23 July 2019 at an expert forum organised by HUBER SE. More than 300 guests had come to inform themselves and listen to the excellent presentations of the experts that both provided an overview of the legal framework and showed practical solutions. In order to be able to maintain sewage sludge disposal safely in the future, regional and future-oriented strategies and solutions are required. The sewage sludge forum with speakers from companies, research, associations and ministries provided information on legal requirements and political developments and, above all, presented innovative and practice-oriented concepts. The well-attended Europahalle at Berching - more than 300 guests had come to inform themselves and listen to excellent presentations of the experts The Bavarian Minister for the Environment Glauber as patron of the event in his welcome video message The innovative approaches of the presentations and the concepts for secured sewage sludge disposal were met with lively interest from the audience The breaks offered sufficient space for technical discussions and networking CEO Georg Huber opened the event that took place in the Europahalle at Berching, reminding the audience in his welcome speech that the first HUBER Sewage Sludge Day was organised 15 years ago. The moderator of the event, Professor Norbert Dichtl, director of the Institute for Sanitary Engineering of the Technical University of Braunschweig, explained in his introductory speech the legal regulations setting the framework for sewage sludge disposal. Especially the new German Fertilizer Regulation and Waste Sewage Sludge Ordinance are playing a prominent role in this context. This results in the necessity to provide increased capacity for sewage sludge mono-incineration plants and in an increased demand for economical methods of phosphorus recovery. Markus Gleis of the German Federal Environmental Agency reported then about the present situation of sewage sludge disposal in Germany. Approximately 1.8 million tons dry mass are generated annually in Germany. In 2016, approximately 65% of it were used for agricultural purposes, 24% for thermal utilisation and 11% went to landscaping projects. He also stated the German Federal Environmental Agency’s position when it comes to the future of sewage sludge: abandon agricultural sewage sludge utilisation and recover phosphorus and energy from sewage sludge. Professor Mocker of the University of Applied Sciences Amberg-Weiden dealt with the topic of thermal sewage sludge utilisation. He demonstrated the advantages and disadvantages of decentralized and centralized solutions for sewage sludge drying and further thermal sewage sludge utilisation. He explained in detail the different technical solutions available presently but finally concluded that the proven technology of mono-incineration in a fluidised bed furnace is the technology of choice. Experts spoke about their practical experience and projects they have implemented. Ulrich Jacobs pointed out the importance of intercommunal cooperation and showed with the example of a sewage sludge cooperation in the northeastern German state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern what to consider when uniting 15 wastewater authorities into one cooperation and what are the challenges to overcome in this process. Harald Erber of STW Innsbruck reported about the successful installation of a HUBER Belt Dryer BT on the sewage treatment plant Innsbruck. Mr. Ziegler of STW Bayreuth told about his practical experience with the HUBER solar sewage sludge dryer and provided also interesting insights into the decision process that led to choosing a solar dryer. Professor Günthert introduced to the audience the Platform for coordination of municipal sewage sludge utilisation in Bavaria (PKB) . The task of this organisation, among other, is to support Bavarian municipalities in establishing partnerships (with economy or as intercommunal cooperations) and promote the exchange of expertise with researchers and suppliers of options for sewage sludge utilisation. Jan Kirchoff of Glatt Ingenieurtechnik GmbH picked up the topic of phosphorus recycling, which is closely connected with the issue of sewage sludge disposal. He presented the PHOS4green method that manages to convert sewage sludge ash to phosphorus fertilizer. A large-scale plant with a processing capacity of 60,000 t sewage sludge ash per year is currently under construction. Insight into the activities of a sewage sludge disposal company was given by Johann Emter of Emter GmbH. On their thermal sewage sludge utilisation plant, they process 140,000 t sewage sludge per year. The sewage sludge ash generated on site is utilised as fertilizer. Due to the great demand, they are planning to increase the incineration capacity of the plant with the installation of a HUBER Belt Dryer BT 24. As representative of WTEB, Thomas Roitzsch reported about the project Halle-Lochau, a thermal sewage sludge utilisation plant with slude2energy GmbH as contractor. sludge2energy is a joint enterprise between the companies WTE Essen and HUBER SE. The plant at Halle-Lochau is designed for a capacity of approximately 33,000 t/a dewatered sewage sludge and 2,750 t/a dried sewage sludge. Commissioning of the plant is scheduled to take place in September 2020. WTEB as a subsidiary of WTE Essen will take over the operation of the plant. The successful event was closed with a summary provided by Professor Dichtl who once again reflected on the many aspects of sewage sludge disposal. [...]Niebüll, Germany 2 HUBER Complete Plant ROTAMAT® Ro5 units for 100 l/s on STP Niebüll in Northern Germany Those who know the regions up in the north will know where the town Niebüll is located: It is a holiday destination in the northernmost part of Germany at the North Sea from where also the motorail train crosses the Hindenburg Dam to the village Westerland on the island of Sylt. These special circumstances naturally played a major role for the engineering office Ivers in Husum when planning the preliminary wastewater treatment stage on STP Niebüll. It had to be taken into account that the population equivalent is varying greatly. On public holidays and during holiday seasons, it can happen that the wastewater volumes suddenly increase tremendously and then fall to a normal level again. This situation had to be considered when planning the project. There was a lively exchange previously with the plant manager Daninel Johannsen and his crew and with Mr. Pieper from the engineering office Ivers, bringing in the experience from the project STP Zingst, a sewage treatment plant in a holiday destination at the Baltic See that has been working successfully under similar conditions for many years. Especially the installation of the HUBER Complete Plant ROTAMAT® Ro5 units is an important moment in the execution of the project. Such plants are normally lifted into the tiled building and moved through the gate with a 50t crane by the forwarder. Heavy-duty rollers are used to move the plants to their place inside the building. Our customer GAA Mölln who had the delivery and installation of the machines in their order has been supported by us in this work with help and advice. The load had to be distributed onto several pairs of supporting feet. In June 2016, the factory acceptance test took place at Berching. This was a good opportunity for the customer to look into sections of the machine that would not be visible later because they will be covered with wastewater and they did not miss this chance. At the end of September 2016, the two HUBER Complete Plant ROTAMAT® Ro5 units and the HUBER Grit Washer RoSF4 were put into operation. In cooperation with the team of operating staff on site the setting parameters for the machines have meanwhile been adjusted to the operating situation on site – an important aspect for the operational reliability of the plant. This requires the extensive experience we have gathered over many years with similar projects. [...]On Wednesday, 26 April 2023, the new sewage sludge drying plant was commissioned at Erlangen WWTP. The heart of the plant is a HUBER Belt Dryer BT 16, which will reduce the amount of sewage sludge to be processed by about 70 % in the future. In their speeches, Bavarian Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber and Dr. Florian Janik, Mayor of the City of Erlangen, emphasised the “pioneering work” being done in Erlangen on one of the most modern sewage treatment plants in Europe. 70 percent less sewage sludge, 1,200 tons CO 2 savings In the future, approx. 15,700 t/a of sewage sludge will be dried to ≥ 90 % dry residue (DR) in the HUBER Belt Dryer BT 16. The amount of sewage sludge to be processed in the sewage treatment plant will thus be reduced by about 70 %. In particular, the elimination of truck transports can save about 1,200 t of CO 2 annually. In case the dried sewage sludge is then thermally treated, almost 920,000 m³ of natural gas can also be saved per year. Environment Minister Glauber: “showcase project, top engineering and high-tech” ”The Erlangen sewage treatment plant is one of the most modern sewage treatment plants in Europe,” said Bavarian Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber in his speech before the official commissioning: ”It is a showcase project and stands for the highest art of engineering. The modern sewage treatment plant combines water protection with the challenges of energy transition and climate protection. The new drying plant is pure high-tech. Less sewage sludge means fewer lorry transports. This means less CO 2 and less noise. The Erlangen sewage treatment plant is exemplary: only those who invest stay ahead.” CO 2 -neutral operation of the belt dryer In addition, the dried sewage sludge can be regionally utilised as a substitute fuel because its calorific value is comparable to that of lignite. The sewage treatment plant has already been energy self-sufficient since 2019: the exclusively regenerative energy generation is significantly higher than the energy demand of the sewage treatment plant. The new belt dryer can also be operated in a CO 2 -neutral manner. The thermal energy demand of the drying plant is ensured 100% by regenerative energy from the combined heat and power of the sewage treatment plant as well as from a combination of photovoltaic systems and heat recovery using high-temperature heat pumps. Scope of delivery: HUBER belt dryer and entire “periphery”. The scope of supply includes the HUBER Belt Dryer BT 16 and all peripherals, consisting of, among others, a HUBER Screw Conveyor Ro8 T, seven sludge conveyors and a thick sludge pump. Also included are the exhaust air treatment, two biofilters and two chimneys, the chemical handling including receiving and filling cabinets, four chemical storage tanks, six dosing cabinets and double piping, the steel and piping construction, a bucket elevator and the control system. City of Erlangen has invested around 100 million euros in 20 years The city of Erlangen invests a large financial amount in the future viability of its sewage treatment plant – about 100 million euros in the last 20 years. Over the life of this project, Toronto Western Hospital will see a cumulative reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of approximately 169,000 tonnes - equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of approximately 52,000 cars. Mayor of the City of Toronto: "Great initiative to tackle climate change" These figures are matched by the statement of John Tory, Mayor of the City of Toronto. At the project announcement on 16 April 2021, he emphasised in his speech that this new wastewater project in Toronto is a great initiative to tackle climate change in everyday life. He said he hopes that the success of this project will allow similar technologies and initiatives to be implemented across the city to achieve the climate change goals that have been set. HUBER ThermWin system enables operation of pandemic early warning system According to Dennis Fotinos, founder and CEO of Noventa Energy Partners, the project provides the hospital with significant savings in operating costs in addition to substantial energy and environmental benefits. Furthermore, the HUBER ThermWin system enables the operation of a pandemic early warning system. A university affiliated to the hospital can thus specifically analyse the wastewater for pathogens and other harmful toxins. This enables an early and better response to a new pandemic. In addition, Fotinos emphasised the great support from the Canadian government. Future recovery heat covers about 85% of the heating and cooling needs The new system will provide clean energy to the Toronto Western Hospital, using recovered heat from wastewater and the sewage system.
