Special solution for mechanical wastewater treatment at the Heiligenblut STP: in-channel HUBER Pumping Stations Screen ROTAMAT® RoK4

The Heiligenblut wastewater treatment plant, which has a capacity of 8,250 PE, was built at the foot of the Großglockner, Austria's highest mountain, in 1986. It treats the wastewater of the entire municipality of Heiligenblut (at an altitude of 1,288 m), including Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, which is the highest point of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road (at an altitude of 2,369 m). The sewage treatment plant is located next to the Mölltal federal road in the village of Rojach, at an altitude of 1,098 meters.

The challenge: limited installation space and high requirements

The special challenge was to install a machine with good separation performance and high hydraulic throughput for a wastewater volume of 60 l/s, given the circumstances, such as installing a screw conveyor in the direction of flow upstream of the screen, a short screen chamber and a deep channel, as well as ensuring a short conversion time.

Proven solution: vertical HUBER Pumping Stations Screen ROTAMAT® RoK4

This is not the first time that a special solution with a vertical HUBER Pumping Stations Screen ROTAMAT® RoK4 was provided. The same solution was used 16 years ago in Reischach in Lower Bavaria. When installed as a free-standing inlet screen in a pumping station, the RoK4 normally has a free outlet for the screened wastewater all around.

Creative use of existing structures in the channel

In the channel, only the downstream half of the screen basket would be hydraulically effective if the two U-beams of the frame of the old back-raked screen were not walled in exactly where they are. There, these beams serve a dual purpose: vertical grooves did not need to be cut into the channel wall on both sides and the lateral U-beams allow flow around them, thus enabling hydraulic utilization of the inlet side of the screen basket. This side is hydraulically separated from the inflow by a baffle and inlet plate.

Adapted performance through half-side flow

With a completely free outlet, as in a pumping station, the RoK4 size 500 with 6 mm perforation can screen 120 l/s of domestic wastewater. Given that only half of the screen basket can be used for flow, the dimensioning of the screen was well suited to a 60 l/s inflow volume.

Efficient adaptation for maximum effect

The challenge was to adapt a machine designed for a different purpose so that it works in harmony with the structural conditions, providing performance reserves and significant benefits to the customer with minimal conversion measures.
