[...]Parsberg, Germany The town of Parsberg lies in the heart of the Bavarian Jura between Nuremberg and Regensburg. It is particularly popular with tourists as a local recreation area and thanks to its perfect connection to the Five Rivers Cycle Route. The Parsberg sewage treatment plant is located in the valley alongside the Schwarze Laber river. It has a mechanical, biological and chemical treatment stage and is designed for up to 13,300 PE. A two-storey building was specifically constructed on the hilly terrain for local sludge dewatering, which was a conscious decision by the town of Parsberg. New building to optimise sludge dewatering The decision to construct a new sludge dewatering and storage facility near the existing sludge storage tank was made because the load on the sewage treatment plant had steadily increased by 10 to 15%, and the dewatering carried out by a contractor was costly. Sludge dewatering had been carried out on a quarterly basis until then. This resulted in large quantities of stored sewage sludge and filtrate building up in excess every four months. The large quantity that accumulated in a very short time could not be fully returned to the system and had to be disposed of at additional cost. New technology, new buildings At the end of 2022, the presentation of the new sludge dewatering building to the city council marked the start of construction at the Parsberg sewage treatment plant. In addition to the sludge dewatering plant building, it was also decided to build an integrated mixed sludge storage tank with a gas hood and a sludge storage hall. In addition to the HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS®, the following equipment was also requested for sludge dewatering: the entire pump and measurement technology, polymer preparation including polymer mixing, switchgear and control technology with control system connection. Initial tests and positive results for the HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® The performance of the HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® Q440.2 was already tested on site in 2017 using our mobile demonstration unit in order to investigate the dewatering potential of the sewage sludge. The positive characteristics of the HUBER screw press were confirmed there: Dewatering performance > 26% DR Throughput of up to 4 m³/h Possibility of 24/7 operation Very good separation efficiency of > 98% Construction and commissioning Construction of the sewage sludge dewatering building began in autumn 2023. The building was designed to optimally accommodate the equipment. The mechanical and electrical peripherals for the HUBER components were supplied by SCHARR TEC at Hunderdorf (Lower Bavaria), the general contractor for the overall project, for which the HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® with intelligent conveyor system, including process technology, was supplied. The HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® Q440.2 was then commissioned in January 2025. The screw press control system regulates the machine to the preset optimum operating point, with the aim of achieving a high degree of dewatering and minimal filtrate load. Additionally, the receiving tank is equipped with an automatic sludge level reduction system. This system uses a double-secured level detection mechanism for automatic feeding of the machine. Performance data and optimisations The following sludge dewatering performance data was achieved: Dewatering performance of 25% to 28% DR 25% reduction in polymer consumption with 25% outlet DR compared to 28% outlet DR (desired outlet DR: 25%) Throughput of up to 15 m³/h Very good separation efficiency of > 98% Screw shaft speed of 0.3 rpm Electrical drive power of the machine of 0.4 kW Additional positive side effects: The operator can optimise system operation independently. Automated sludge transport and container change The dewatered sludge is then automatically transported from the upper floor to the basement via a shaft connected to the Q-PRESS®, and is then further conveyed into a container by a HUBER Ro8 TC distribution conveyor. The two degrees of freedom of the Ro8 TC – rotation and translation motion – ensure the container is filled to its optimum volume. The 20 m³ container is filled evenly due to the automatic swivel mechanism created by the rotational movement and the additional position adjustment of the screw conveyor’s chute with integrated fill level detection. The alternating filling of two containers is fully automated at the Parsberg sewage treatment plant, thus eliminating the need for employees to be present at any specific time. There is also no requirement for staff to be present when the dewatered sludge is transported away, which takes place every 6–7 days. By independently activating the ‘container change’ switch, the distribution screw automatically moves into a parking position, allowing the container to be changed independently without collision.[...]
[...]Sargans, Switzerland High level of user-friendliness increased even further In Sargans, Switzerland's first HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS ® Q 800.2 was installed in 2017 for dewatering digested sewage sludge. The latest generation of screw press could win the competition against other systems due to its very high operational reliability and user-friendliness, complete stainless steel construction and very low operating costs. The demands on the system are extremely high. An essential factor is the required DR concentration in the dewatered sludge of over 30% with simultaneously clear filtrate quality. Furthermore, fully automatic operation is of great importance for the efficient use of the plant. After the usual system optimisations had been implemented in the first year, the operator expressed the wish for further automation options, especially with regard to decalcification. The reason for this was that the machine had to be descaled every quarter due to the hard water (around 25 °fH or 14 °dH hardness). Along with the planned automatic decalcification, the concept of a torque control for the targeted increase of the DR concentration was also developed. Both questions clearly aimed for an even higher efficiency in operation with optimised personnel deployment. Fully automatic decalcification The deposition process of lime precipitates and other substances that are difficult to dissolve on the screen basket surface and in the filter gaps is gradual. As a result, the freely available surface of the filter basket is continuously reduced, which has a direct effect on the performance of the machine. Since manual descaling is a significant time and cost factor, this operation should be reduced to a minimum. The fully automatic descaling is implemented by using the new rotating spray bar system, which is applied for the standard cleaning of the outer surface of the filter baskets. At a freely selectable interval, a descaling agent is dosed into the water supply line to the spray bar and allowed to take effect for a certain time. In the case of Sargans, this is done at an interval of one week and with a reaction time of about one hour before the system is rinsed normally with service water and then filled with sludge. The fully automatic decalcification achieves the following objectives: Regular descaling of the filter baskets without manual operations Avoid thicker deposits, which would be even more difficult to remove Ensure stable and optimal operating conditions for dewatering Increase the service life of downstream units (impeller of filtrate pump) Reduce downtimes for costly cleaning work. Since the installation of the descaling station at the beginning of 2019, no manual descaling of the HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS ® Q 800.2 has been carried out in Sargans and the condition of the filter basket as well as the performance of the plant are constantly at a very high level. Load-dependent machine control Due to the high requirements on the DR in the dewatered sludge, the screw press is operated at high load. To ensure the machine would not be overloaded during normal operation, the operating parameters were set conservatively and closely monitored by the staff. With this mode of operation, on the one hand, part of the capacity was not utilised at all and, on the other hand, the effects of the manual interventions were only effective for a short time as the dynamics of the process could not be sustainably influenced by them. With the load-dependent control system for the HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS ® Q 800.2 implemented in Sargans for the first time worldwide, the operating parameters are adjusted continuously to ensure optimum operation without jeopardising operational safety. That is why HUBER invests in regular service consultant tours worldwide to support operators directly on site, identify opportunities for optimisation and strengthen personal interaction. As part of these service activities, our HUBER service consultant Martin Burger spent three weeks in Indonesia and Australia from mid-May to early June 2026. Together with the regional HUBER partners, he visited numerous existing customers, inspected systems, trained operators and discussed service and maintenance issues. Three intensive days in Indonesia The service consultant tour in Indonesia was coordinated by HUBER Technology Asia-Pacific Pte Ltd in Singapore. HUBER has been working closely with its local partner, PT. Grahadika Adipurnajasa, for many years. The tour began in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. During the customer visits, Martin Burger was accompanied by Fabian Kana from HUBER Service Malaysia, as well as Grahadika staff members Jaya and Momo. The tour included visits to various facilities in the Greater Jakarta area. Among the sites visited were Soekarno Hatta, Sumur Batu, Cideng and Cikokol, as well as several HUBER Coarse Screen TrashMax® installations in Jati Pinggir. A key focus was the training of operational staff. At the Soekarno Hatta plant, staff received comprehensive training in the operation and maintenance of the installed HUBER machinery. The direct exchange enabled questions to be clarified immediately and provided valuable guidance on safe plant operation. Working alongside Hydroflux with customers in Australia Following the first service consultant tour in 2023, Martin Burger was back on the road in Australia to visit customers alongside HUBER’s long-standing partner, Hydroflux Pty Ltd, and to support them with service and maintenance issues. Hydroflux, headquartered in Sydney, is one of Australia’s leading companies in the field of water and wastewater technology. Throughout the tour, Martin Burger was accompanied by Stewart Harris, who manages HUBER services at Hydroflux, from customer advice and spare parts and service quotations to repairs and on-site service calls. The team spent the first week in the Brisbane region of Queensland. Amongst other sites, they visited the wastewater treatment works at Noosa, Kawana, Maroochydore, Bribie Island, Luggage Point, Karana Downs and Lowood as well as major industrial companies in the region. Discussions focused on plant optimisation as well as service and maintenance issues. Customers particularly appreciated the joint visit by Hydroflux and a service consultant from Germany. Many operators took the opportunity to discuss technical issues directly with the experts. Further highlights included attending OZWATER in Brisbane, Australia’s largest trade fair for water and wastewater technology, and a visit to the famous Nepalese Peace Pagoda with Hydroflux colleagues Chee Terng Lee and Daniel Potente. The structure is one of Brisbane’s most significant cultural landmarks. There is a special story behind the bell installed there: Traditionally, Hydroflux rings it whenever a major contract is secured. It was last rung following the successful signing of the contract for the ‘Riverstone’ project involving a HUBER Belt Dryer BT. Weekend in Sydney Martin Burger spent the weekend in Sydney. During his stay, the internationally renowned Vivid Sydney Festival was taking place there – Australia’s largest festival of light, music, ideas and cuisine. The spectacular light installations along the harbour and at the world-famous Sydney Opera House were particularly impressive. The combination of modern light art and a unique backdrop made the visit a special experience. The following week saw a continuation of customer visits in the Sydney area, including to the Farley STP, Tanilba Bay, Burwood Beach, Paxton, Goulburn, Bowral STP and Moss Vale STP sites. Here, too, it was clear just how much customers appreciate the joint presence of Hydroflux and HUBER. Many operators took the opportunity to engage in in-depth technical discussions and consultations directly on site. Another key focus was the consultation at the West Camden sewage treatment works. Here, opportunities for plant optimisation and future service activities were discussed. Personal service as a key to success The service consultant tour has once again demonstrated the great importance of personal contact with customers and operators. The combination of local support from HUBER’s long-standing partners and direct technical discussions with a service consultant from Germany was very well received in both Indonesia and Australia. The on-site discussions strengthened existing customer relationships, highlighted potential for optimisation and provided valuable impetus for future projects. [...]Continuous screening, dewatering and transport of coarse material in one operation Removal of coarse material from municipal sludge and industrial process water The STRAINPRESS® is a horizontal cylindrical coarse material separator which consists of inlet and screening zone, press zone, and a discharge section. It is used for liquid sludge screening or filtration of service or process water under pressure. The system does not need any wash water as backwashing of the screen is unnecessary. The perforation and design of the screw shaft are individually adjusted to optimally suit specific requirements. Design and Function A pump presses the unscreened liquid through the screening zone and delivers the screened liquid to further process steps. The coarse material which is retained on the cylindrical screen is stripped off by a coaxial screw and pushed through the press zone where the material is extensively compacted and dewatered. The screw operates only when the pressure sensors detect a differential pressure caused by screen surface blinding. The compacted material is pressed through a gap around a hydraulically operated pressure cone which closes part of the pipe end and builds up counterpressure. The counterpressure of the cone is automatically regulated inversely proportional to the screw motor load. Easy maintenance The complete casing, perforated plate and screw shaft of the HUBER Sludgecleaner STRAINPRESS® are made of corrosion-resistant 1.4307 (AISI 304L) stainless steel. The screw flights are reinforced with tungsten carbide for wear protection. The machine can be split in the middle and one half of the machine moved for maintenance. This allows for example to replace the perforated plate and install a screen insert with a new perforation size.
