Design and Function Grit separation with the HUBER Vortex Grit Chamber VORMAX starts already in the inlet channel to the grit trap. Like in an unaerated longitudinal grit trap the grit sinks downs to the channel bottom from where it is transported into the circular grit trap along with the wastewater flow. A tangential rotational movement is generated due to the curved design of the (mostly concreted customer’s) concrete tank. A constantly rotating stirrer helps support the wastewater circulation within the grit chamber ensuring a constant velocity of rotation within the complete grit trap system even with greatly varying hydraulic conditions. Due to the constant radial rotation, caused by a secondary flow near to the bottom, the solids are very quickly collected within the centre of the grit chamber from where thy then pass into the bottom of the grit collection tank. The grit-free waste- water then exits and flows onto the next treatment step. Centrifugal or airlift pumps can then deliver the collected solids from the grit collection tank into a grit classifier or grit washer where the solids can then be subsequently separated and dewatered and organic particles removed. Design and function HUBER Wash Drum RoSF9 for separation of grit from WWTPs and sewer systems, road refuse and oil grit: While wash water is added to pre-wash and homogenise the raw material within the HUBER Wash Drum RoSF9, the perforated plate of the Wash Drum retains all particles bigger than the perforation, which are dewatered and then discharged into a skip. Since only coarse material bigger than the separation is separated, the volume of the resultant residues is vastly reduced with virtually the complete mineral material being further treated in the down-stream HUBER Coanda Grit Washer RoSF4 . The resultant coarse material can then be further separated into a mineral and organic fraction by means of a coarse material washer. [...]Muta Mazar , Jordan Until now, most of the sewage sludge produced in Jordan has been stored in open areas or in landfills that are usually unsuitable for this purpose. This approach has a negative impact on the quality of the surface and groundwater in the affected regions and also causes high emissions due to the release of methane. In practice, it also means that existing resources remain unutilised. Improving sewage sludge management With the aim of improving the economic and ecological sustainability of sewage sludge management in the country, similar projects are currently being planned in many places. HUBER SE succeeded in winning the first such project at the beginning of 2024. HUBER and its subsidiary MENA Water were thus able to set a first milestone. The construction time to commissioning was only ten months, meaning that the turnkey plant with the greenhouse construction was completed in record time. The project was fully planned by MENA Water and HUBER SE and coordinated by MENA Water. HUBER Sludgeturner SOLSTICE® for Muta Mazar wastewater treatment plant After years of intensive consultation and in close co-operation with MENA Water, we were able to secure the order for the supply of a HUBER Sludgeturner SOLSTICE® line including the associated control system, fans, safety and air-conditioning technology at the beginning of the year. At the wastewater treatment plant in Muta Mazar in western Jordan, 1,500 t/a of sewage sludge from 70,000 inhabitants can be dried in a 12 x 80 m greenhouse with a dewatering capacity of 20% DR – a sustainable and climate-neutral solution that uses the available solar energy. Sewage sludge becomes a valuable resource The HUBER Sludgeturner SOLSTICE® is characterised by its ease of operation and high reliability. In future, the new plant will be fed manually with the help of wheel loaders. The treated sewage sludge will subsequently be processed into alternative fuel, industrial raw material or compost additive. This makes the sewage sludge a valuable raw material for the operator in future and can therefore add value for them. [...]When Royal Haskoning introduced the innovative Nereda process into the UK, it needed a reliable inlet works that removed grease, grit and screenings and at the same time a system that reliably thickened the sludge. HUBER were the first port of call for both applications and as both companies are committed to building off-site for safety and construction, efficiency reasons it was a natural alignment. Standardised DfMA Inlet Works The HUBER Complete Plant ROTAMAT® Ro5 – complete plant is an all-in-one inlet works comprising longitudinal grit separation – essential to guarantee the grit removal rates required by Nereda – grease removal and screenings in a single factory constructed unit. This unit is serving both Scottish Water at Inverurie and Anglian Water at Great Dunmow. Standardised DfMA packaged screens A further inlet works innovation was also used at the first Nereda plant in United Utilities at Westnewton WwTW using the HUBER Micro Strainer ROTAMAT® Ro9 . This project won two Water Industry Awards 2021 – the first for innovation across the whole project and secondly for the inlet works which HUBER developed with UU’s delivery partner Advance Plus – Delivering Efficiencies through productising complex products. This inlet works design was developed in partnership for use across the whole of UU’s area – and can be replicated by any delivery partner – it has already been adopted by C2V+ and represents a standard solution, largely constructed off-site comprising HUBER Ro9 screens in tanks with a by-pass. Standardised DfMA Sludge thickening The HUBER Disc Thickener S-DISC has long been the go-to sludge thickening plant for smaller sewage works based on its, robust operation and design, exceptionally long life and low cost. The ability to package the equipment onto a plug and play skid, assembled at HUBER’s Chippenham workshop means it fits perfectly with Royal Haskoning’s DfMA philosophy. The first time Nereda sludge was treated in the UK was at Anglian Water’s Great Dunmow site where the skid mounted S-DISC was fitted at the back of the package HUBER Ro5 inlet works and the package Nereda plant. The S-DISC took the Nereda sludge in its stride and has been installed at Nereda plants at Failsworth (UU) and Radcliffe-on-Trent – for Severn Trent Water where the S-DISC is widely used. Larger Standard sludge thickening solutions Due to the HUBER process security around thickening sludge, including Nereda, the HUBER Rotary Screw Thickener S-DRUM are now used on larger Nereda works such as Kendal WwTW (103,000PE) and Blackburn (320,000 PE). [...]Ampfing, Germany The turkey slaughterhouse Süddeutsche Truthahn AG was built in Ampfing in 2002. With 500 employees and 200 contractual fatteners, the independent Süddeutsche Truthahn AG generates an annual turnover of more than 170 million euros. The slaughterhouse Süddeutsche Truthahn AG produces approx. 800 m³ of wastewater daily. This wastewater has already been collected in the production building and treated in the wastewater building with a preliminary screen (curved screen) and a flotation system and discharged to the adjacent wastewater treatment plant. Due to continuous expansion of the production, the existing machine technology could no longer meet the discharge conditions required by the municipality. In addition, a high cleaning and maintenance effort was necessary. Therefore, Süddeutsche Truthahn AG decided to renew the complete wastewater treatment plant in order to be able to reliably and permanently comply with the required inlet conditions. The collected wastewater from the production will continue to be discharged by gravity to the existing pump shafts. In each of these shafts a feed pump has been installed. One pump is used to feed the screening plant, the other to circulate and agitate the solids. A HUBER Drum Screen RoMesh ® 3 with 3 mm perforated plate and an internal and external spray nozzle bar is used as screening system. This is mounted on a base frame to direct the effluent directly into the downstream HUBER Longitudinal Grit Trap ROTAMAT ® Ro6 30. The grit trap is equipped with paddles to remove floating materials (e.g. free grease). The sediments (grit, stomach pebbles) are transported into a container by a discharge screw conveyor. The mechanically cleaned wastewater then flows by gravity into another pump shaft and from there into an agitated mixing and equalising tank (approx. 900 m³). This tank not only serves to homogenise the wastewater but also functions as a safety in case of an accident or for carrying out maintenance work on the wastewater system (buffering of a whole daily quantity). From the mixing and equalising tank a dry-installed centrifugal pump transfers the wastewater via a tubular flocculator to the HUBER Dissolved Air Flotation Plant HDF 10. In the tube flocculator, precipitant (ferric III chloride) and polymer are dosed and neutralised. In the HUBER Dissolved Air Flotation Plant HDF 10 the produced flocs are floated with micro-bubbles (approx. 50µm) and are pushed into the flotate sludge tank by a scraper. The flotate sludge and settling solids are removed at regular intervals by the flotate pump. The disposal route for the flotate sludge is still via a biogas plant. The clear water flows by gravity to another pump shaft and is pumped on to the sewage treatment plant. Later on, a part of the clear effluent from the flotation plant is planned to be reused. However, this requires hygienisation, which will be retrofitted at a later date. The tube flocculator and the switchboard and control system have already been prepared for easy retrofitting of the HUBER chemical dosing system DIGIT-DOSE. In addition to the machines, HUBER SE also supplied the complete piping, the mechanical and electrical installation as well as the switchboard and control system. The plant technology was successfully commissioned in May 2020. The event was organised together with the Association du Personnel des Stations d'Épuration Luxembourgeoises a.s.b.l. More than 84 people from Luxembourg wastewater associations, the so-called syndicates such as SIACH, SIDEN, Sidero, Sivec, Sidest, Step, the Ville de Luxembourg and the Luxembourg Association of Water Supply Companies Aluseau (Association Luxembourgeoise des Services d'Eau a.s.b.l.) attended the event. The topic "Advanced Wastewater Treatment (Fourth Treatment Stage)" met with great interest among the participants. HUBER staff demonstrated the application possibilities for products and machine technology such as the HUBER Cloth Filter RotaFilt® , HUBER Disc Filter RoDisc® , HUBER Sand Filter CONTIFLOW® and the HUBER Activated Carbon Filter CONTIFLOW® GAK . Different processes for the elimination of micropollutants, microplastics, retention of suspended solids (AFS), phosphorus and separation of PAHs were presented. For a week, over 100 national and international HUBER experts presented more than 50 product highlights at the trade fair stand, which covered an area of around 1,300 m². The model impresses with its hydraulic throughput capacity by means of a U-shaped bar rack, even with small bar spacings and in narrow channels. It offers an optimal hydraulic utilisation of existing channels and the screen is unsusceptible to grit, gravel and stones. Due to its different design options the RakeMax® CF covers a very wide range of applications, allowing us to respond to the individual needs of our customers and to specific constructional and hydraulic site conditions. Highly valued in the market and proven in thousands of installations all around the world, the HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® is well established in the market due to its versatility. As a result of continuous development, another innovative screen type has now been designed based on the successful RakeMax® principle. The HUBER RakeMax® CF is a modified variant with a U-shaped stationary screen rack installed between the two screen frames. The bar rack is arranged in parallel to the flow direction of the wastewater. Whilst the wastewater flows into the open front side of the screen and out through both the left and right bar rack, solids are retained on the inner surface of the U-shaped bar rack. The solids retained on the bar rack lead to gradual blinding of the bar rack surface, which has an impact on the level difference in the channel. Cleaning of the screen bars starts at a defined water level in the channel upstream of the screen. The RakeMax ® CF achieves this with its cleaning elements attached to the chain system. At the end of the bar rack cleaning cycle the cleaning elements are positively cleaned by a pivoted comb which reliably discharges the removed screenings into a downstream transport or disposal unit. The easy to access and maintain drive unit is installed above the channel. Due to the screen’s compact design its height above floor is very low.
