[...]We are deeply saddened to announce that our former shareholder, managing director and supervisory board chairman Mr. Karl-Josef Huber passed away after a long and serious illness on Friday, 24th June 2016, at the age of 69. It was back in 1967 when he joined his parents' company before taking over the company management in 1969 together with his brother Hans Huber. At that time, 25 people were employed in the company. By focusing on the material stainless steel and the issue "water" the two brothers developed the family business from a small, regional enterprise into an internationally operating company with a worldwide established reputation. Clear visions combined with courageous decisions and a great sense of responsibility for the local area and its employees have made HUBER the company it is today, with 700 employees working at the headquarters in Berching from where HUBER products are sold all over the world. A key success factor in this process has been, and still is, the HUBER production which, under the management of Karl-Josef Huber, developed from a small handicraft business to a state-of-the-art facility where a wide range of machines and plants are manufactured. Over all the years, he was tireless in his efforts to continuously extend and further develop the production facilities to ensure that high-quality products can be manufactured cost-effectively at the location Berching and delivered to the global customers on schedule. Due to a high vertical range of manufacture it has been possible to permanently incorporate innovative product ideas very quickly into the production process. It was of vital importance in this respect that the two brothers decided in 1992 to build a completely new manufacturing plant on a greenfield site. At that time, HUBER achieved an annual turnover of approx. 60 million Euro and invested 20 million Euro into the new production facilities in the industrial area Berching-Erasbach. Under the management of Karl-Josef Huber, who called the project "my baby", the production area grew to finally 25,000 m². HUBER machines and plants are well-known and renowned for their high quality. A large number of customers come to visit the HUBER production each year and leave highly impressed by the variety of products we manufacture and the according manufacturing processes. With great sadness we mourn the death of Karl-Josef Huber. His personality and lifetime achievements will always have a place of honour in our company and its history and build the basis for all our future work. [...]Bickenbach, Germany After around three years of construction, the quaternary treatment stage at the Bickenbach wastewater treatment plant was officially commissioned on 2 April in the presence of numerous representatives from business and politics. The quaternary treatment stage in Bickenbach treats up to 150 litres of wastewater per second and will in future reliably retain the largest proportion of hazardous and persistent micropollutants such as pharmaceutical residues, hormones, biocides and household chemicals. Minister Hofmann: ‘Today is a good day for Bickenbach, for the whole region, for the whole of Hesse!’ ‘With the commissioning of the quaternary treatment stage today, we have created something groundbreaking to further improve drinking water quality in the Hessian Ried,’ said Hessian Minister of Labour Heike Hofmann in her laudatory speech. Thanks to its existing state-of-the-art systems and the additional quaternary treatment stage, the Bickenbach wastewater treatment plant is now the most modern and efficient wastewater treatment plant in Hesse. Quaternary treatment stage processes up to 150 litres of wastewater per second The additional quaternary treatment stage processes up to 150 litres of wastewater per second and consists of a cloth filtration stage, an ozonation stage and a downstream four-stage activated carbon system. 16 HUBER Activated Carbon Filter CONTIFLOW® GAK units ensure the adsorption of trace substances that are difficult to oxidise and take over the biological degradation of the transformation products from the ozonation stage. Before entering the quaternary treatment stage, a two-line cloth filtration system consisting of two HUBER Pile Cloth Media Filter RotaFilt® 2700 units ensures reliable removal of contaminants and impurities. If required, this stage can also be used as flocculation filtration for phosphorus removal. The proven HUBER Pressure-Tight Door TT7 and the HUBER Manhole Cover SD5, which are also an integral part of the ozone reactor in Bickenbach, are almost standard equipment for ozonation stages. Mayor Hennemann: ‘Decisive contribution to environmental protection’ The cloth filtration system began operating in Bickenbach back in November 2024, followed by the activated carbon stage in mid-February and finally ozonation at the end of March. ‘The first samples have already been sent to the laboratory for assessment,’ proudly reports Jörg Stanzel, Managing Director of the wastewater association for 22 years. The aim of the new purification stage is to discharge the water from the sewage treatment plant as clean as possible. ‘This should be a major concern for all of us,’ agree Markus Hennemann, Chairman of the Association and Mayor of Bickenbach, and his deputy Birgit Kannegießer, Mayor of Seeheim-Jugenheim. ‘Not only are we making a decisive contribution to environmental protection, we are also doing something important for future generations.’ With its new modern quaternary treatment stage, Bickenbach is contributing significantly to the protection of the Hessian Ried. From their new headquarters Huber will coordinate their total global business, including marketing activities, research and development as well as centralized commercial administration. It was our conscious decision to centralize our production and complete administration in Berching/Erasbach to coordinate and control our global activities from here, but this does not mean that we will cut back our export activities. We need growth in export countries as well to be able to provide the local service required there. Growth here in Germany will only be possible if there is growth abroad, as our export rate lies meanwhile at around 60%. We will continue to present ourselves as a leading and globally active company - a goal for which the new office building is the necessary basis for a successful future. This future-oriented concept was underlined already with the ground-breaking ceremony one year ago on 6th September 2002, the day of Hans G. Huber's 60th birthday. On the occasion of this event, the motto of which was "Active on a global scale - At home in Bavaria", the Managing Director Hans G. Huber underlined the significance of the new building for the company: "We see the new building as a symbol for our future, our international orientation and our roots". [...]The regular inspection of installations is an important aspect not to be underestimated where drinking water and wastewater structures need to be maintained as valuable elements of our supply and disposal networks. Regular inspections are the only way to ensure the plants and their peripherals can safely be operated a long time. It is of fundamental importance to early identify defects, damage and weak points by regular inspection so that these can be expertly eliminated as soon as possible. The risks of continuing with run-down equipment are not to be neglected, especially not in the field of drinking water supply! In practice, there are various reasons why it may become necessary to refurbish equipment: The installation is already damaged and represents a risk for its functional reliability. The installation represents a safety risk for life and health. There is the risk that a defect may develop into a damage, The drinking water is or could be adversely affected. The required effluent quality of the wastewater treatment plant cannot be met anymore. The reliable and trouble-free operation cannot be guaranteed anymore. Operation and maintenance costs are too high. Unauthorized persons could wilfully cause damage if equipment is old and worn down. The plant or structure does not meet anymore the legal and/or technical requirements. There are different options of long-lasting, reasonable refurbishments for different specific requirements. A lot can often be achieved already with simple measures! Special products and plants made of stainless steel offer the optimal conditions for a safe and reliable function over a long time, provided they are processed and installed professionally. For many years, the products and techniques offered by HUBER SE have well proven their efficiency in many different environmental applications. [...]Basel, Switzerland HUBER products for one of the largest wastewater treatment plants in Switzerland: Together with its Swiss partner company Helmut Breschan AG, HUBER is involved in the expansion of the Basel wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The Berching-based company is supplying over 200 SD7 manhole covers in various designs, including accessories. The expansion of the Basel municipal wastewater treatment plant is progressing: one of the largest wastewater treatment plants in Switzerland is being expanded and adapted to the provisions of the new Swiss Federal Water Protection Ordinance. The plant is to comply with the latest legal requirements and regulations and, amongst others, is to eliminate micropollutants. After the expansion of the WWTP by ProRheno AG and the participating companies, the aim is also to largely remove nitrogen and organic trace substances from the wastewater in the future. For this project in the border triangle Switzerland-Germany-France, HUBER is supplying more than 200 SD7 manhole covers in various designs , including accessories such as fall protection grates. The high-quality and very durable equipment is to ensure safe and reliable access to the manholes, which are frequently found on wastewater treatment plants. Planning since 2008: commissioning expected in 2024 In 2008, ProRheno AG had decided to upgrade the municipal wastewater treatment plant ARA Basel (270,000 connected inhabitants and 520,000 population equivalents). These plans had been driven primarily by the new Swiss Federal Water Protection Ordinance: the planners recognised that the wastewater contained more and more micropollutants because an increasing amount of substances were finding their way into the wastewater. So far, these micropollutants could not be completely eliminated in the treatment process. The total investment costs amount to more than 295 million Swiss francs. [...]Kaditz, Germany Hot and greasy – sludge screening with the STRAINPRESS® On the way from a sewage treatment works to an energy park – Stadtentwässerung Dresden undertake a variety of measures on STP Kaditz to achieve this goal. One of these measures is the acceptance and treatment of foreign material for co-fermentation in the digesters. They want to use the energy-rich grease sludge to increase the gas production in the two 10,500 m³ digesters and thus achieve a significantly higher energy production in the two block heat and power plants. The grease separator contents delivered by tanker vehicles are passed through a stone trap before they arrive in the buffer tanks where the grease sludge is mixed with the scum from the sewage treatment plant and heated to 50 °C with exhaust heat from the block heat and power plant. Before the energy-rich grease sludge can be pumped into the digester, non-fermentable foreign materials must however be removed. Such materials, for example films, parts of packing material, cutlery or waste tableware, would otherwise lead to expensive maintenance work on digester equipment, heat exchangers, pumps or the downstream sludge dewatering system. STP Dresden-Kaditz has used HUBER STRAINPRESS® machines to screen the primary sludge since 2008 already. STRAINPRESS® units allow for sludge screening directly in the pressure pipeline – with integrated screenings dewatering. This system has proven its capability on STP Dresden-Kaditz for many years already. Two other advantages of the STRAINPRESS® play an important role when screening grease separator contents: The STRAINPRESS® can also be used with hot media flows. As the cylindrical machine is covered with an insulation, the operating staff is not faced with the problem of hot surfaces. Due to the completely enclosed design of the machine there is no uncontrolled spreading of potentially explosive atmospheres or nasty odours inside the operational building. These can be removed by suction in the subsequent intermediate tank. From this intermediate tank the screened grease sludge is pumped into the digesters. As the grease sludge that is delivered to site comes from various different sources, the type and concentration of the sludge in the individual tanker vehicles can differ greatly. The sludge screening system reacts automatically and adjusts the frequency of screen surface cleaning and the dewatering pressure to suit the varying sludge and screenings qualities. This automatic adjustment ensures constant screening results and a stable screenings dewatering degree even with grease sludges of varying properties. The plant for processing external sludge on STP Dresden-Kaditz was put into operation in summer 2012. Two STRAINPRESS® sludge screening units have since treated the hot grease sludge very reliably. About 500 t external sludge are received each month in the two sludge acceptance lines. The amount of screenings separated by the STRAINPRESS® units lies between 15 and 25 t. With the acceptance of external grease sludge the generated electricity from the block heat and power plant could be increased to beyond the expected result. The two STRAINPRESS® units contribute a considerable share to the stable and reliable operation of the complete grease sludge acceptance plant.[...]
[...]Kappern, Austria In Kappern near Marchtrenk, a town between Wels and Linz, lies Austria’s second biggest sewage treatment plant which is designed for 160,000 PE. The main collector A has to cope with a high combined rainwater and sanitary sewer flow. Due to the given specific conditions the stormwater overflow tank Kappern offered an interesting opportunity to combine the two HUBER storm screen types, ROTAMAT® Storm Screen RoK1 and ROTAMAT® Storm Screen RoK2. Due to the screens’ high flexibility and capacity only minor structural adaptation work was necessary to optimally realize this project. Requirements: Retain the solids before they enter the tank to improve the operating reliability of the pumps in the stormwater overflow tank Protect the Grubmüller brook by screening two tank overflows Retain the solids in the DN 250 sewer to the WWTP Key Data: Mouth profile: 2600/1000 Inflow: 2400 l/s Sewer to WWTP: DN 250 Flow to WWTP: 150 l/s Tank inflow RoK 1: 2250 l/s Tank overflow 1 after the tank: 950 l/s Tank overflow 2 with RoK 2: 1300 l/s Requirement 1) is fulfilled by using a RoK1 700-5000 screen (on the left). The RoK1 screens 2250 l/s before this water flows into the tank. The solids, which had previously caused high maintenance requirements for the pumps, are now retained within the separating structure. Requirement 2), screening of tank overflow 1 and tank overflow 2, is fulfilled partly by the RoK1 screen, as the tank overflow 1 lies on the opposite end of the tank, and by tank overflow 2 (on the right), on the weir edge of which a RoK2 700-2500 screen is installed (in the middle). As to requirement 3), the solids are retained by the 6 mm dia. perforated screens so that they can neither enter the tank nor tank overflow 2. They are discharged by the DN 250 sewer which runs to the WWTP. A steep launder channel was built into the about 1.2 m broad berm to allow the screenings removed by the RoK1 screen to pass to the DN 250 sewer. Screenings transport is supported by a washing system. The screenings from the RoK2 are discharged directly to the continuation sewer. The solids from two machines are reliably removed in this way. [...]Berlin, Germany Reliable and innovative products from Berching for the German capital: HUBER will deliver four RotaDry® disc dryers to Berlin for the Waßmannsdorf sewage sludge utilisation plant, which is located on the site of the sewage treatment plant of the same name. In future, the HUBER Disc Dryer RotaDry® units will be used for partial drying of up to 40,800 kg/h sewage sludge. 100% thermal utilisation of sewage sludge in future Berliner Wasserbetriebe (BWB) operates six of its own sewage treatment plants in Berlin and the surrounding region. Instead of agricultural utilisation or co-incineration in power or cement plants, 100% of the sewage sludge is to be utilised in future in the company's own thermal incineration plants. For this purpose, a new mono-incineration plant consisting of three lines operating in parallel is being built at the Berlin-Waßmannsdorf STP site. Increase in dry residue from around 25 to up to 43.5% A crane system and screw conveyors transport the dewatered sewage sludge from the bunker to the disc dryers. In the dryer, the dry residue (DR) of the sludge is then raised from around 25% DR to up to 43.5%. This is done by contact of the sewage sludge with discs heated by up to 6 bar steam pressure. The partially dried sewage sludge leaves the disc dryer via a discharge screw flanged to the dryer, which conveys the sludge towards the fluidised-bed furnaces. Intelligent redundancy concept for higher plant availability The intelligent redundancy concept with an additional sewage sludge conveying and drying line significantly increases plant availability. In the event of a malfunction, the line kept in standby can be started up and ensure the continued operation of the fluidised bed furnace. Start-up in the fourth quarter of 2023, regular operation from 2025 The four disc dryers are to be lifted into level 7 of the sewage sludge utilisation plant in the fourth quarter of 2023 and will go into regular operation with the entire plant in 2025.
