Cenibra Paper Mill (Brazil) – remote commissioning of a major project Considering the complexity of a complete plant and other general conditions, such as the five-hour time difference, the commissioning of the HUBER Belt Dryer BT at the Cenibra paper mill in Brazil is certainly one of HUBER's most challenging remote support projects. Cenibra operates a wastewater treatment plant that produces 54 m³ of excess sludge per hour. This corresponds to a total annual value of 78,000 tonnes of dewatered sludge, which is first pre-dewatered by 5 HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® 800.2 units to approx. 22 % dry residue (DR) and then dried by a HUBER Belt Dryer BT 30 to approx. 90 % DR. [...]Bayonne, France The water board of the city of Bayonne supplies the drinking water for one third of the population (15,000 persons) from the valleys of Petchonea, Arquetce, Ipharager and Lapeyeren. In 2011, the Bayonne water association decided to refurbish their well shafts for drinking water supply. The refurbishment was necessary as the old bitumen coated manhole covers were leaking. The water board put the refurbishment of about 100 shafts out to tender. The tender specifications were for manhole covers including entrance ladders and installations. The cheapest offer was submitted by the construction company Miremont SEE, a specialist in refurbishing concrete shafts. The requirements concerning the manhole covers were very high. The covers had to be completely weatherproof and with safety locks and emergency escape function. The air vents are equipped with insect screens. Some covers are used for highly sensitive shafts and must therefore be attack-proof. The customer relied on our excellent quality, reliability, and experience, and the cost effectiveness of HUBER manhole covers. The order was for in total 136 manhole covers, which we delivered not all at the same time but in the course of several months. Security of supply must be guaranteed at all times. Installation was a real logistic challenge because the manholes had to be installed at difficult to access places. But due to our perfect preparation and our easy-to-install products we had no problem to promise and meet a fixed delivery date. Several employees of Miremont SEE worked on site for more than five months. HUBER manhole covers are an investment into the future. [...]Nova Gorica, Slovenia HUBER received the first order for a Belt Dryer BT installation in Slovenia. Besides a number of other HUBER products, the BT 8 will be installed on the sewage treatment plant of the town Nova Gorica in western Slovenia, not far from the Italian border. The dryer is designed for an annual throughput of 9,300 t dewatered sewage sludge. In summer 2014, HUBER received the order to supply the complete equipment for mechanical wastewater treatment and sludge treatment. The mechanical equipment comprises two coarse screens type HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax®, two fine screens type HUBER Fine Screen STEP SCREEN® SSF-HE with 6 mm bar spacing and three fine screens type HUBER Perforated Plate Screen ROTAMAT® STAR 1800 with 1 mm perforation. When planning the three-stage preliminary treatment system, which is to protect the downstream membrane filtration plant, the end customer relied on HUBER's positive long-term experience in the Slovenian market. Two HUBER Sludge Acceptance Plant ROTAMAT® Ro3.1 units, one HUBER Screenings Wash Press WAP® 4 and one HUBER Coanda Grit Washer RoSF4 complete the range of HUBER products installed in this complex plant. The sludge treatment plant is equipped with two HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® 800 units for sludge dewatering and a HUBER Belt Dryer BT 8. Both plant components ensure that the sludge from the membrane biology is first dewatered to about 20 % and then dried to > 90 % DR. The BT 8 belt dryer is operated with a flow temperature of 140 °C. The dryer thus achieves a water evaporation of just over a ton per hour on a comparatively small drying surface. The electric power that is necessary for drying is only 57 kW per kg water evaporation. This extremely low value is achieved through the dryer's unique HELIX air-flow routing system which ensures that maximum air saturation is achieved and minimizes the volume of air required for drying. This has a very positive effect on power demand as the ventilators are the major power consumers in a drying plant. Furthermore, the BT dryer is equipped with a heat recovery system which recovers the heat that is released as the vapours condensate and makes it available to be utilized for heating purposes on the sewage treatment plant. The useful heat energy generated from condensation amounts to up to 450 kW. This reduces operating costs and helps reduce CO 2 emissions. [...]Bickenbach, Germany Advanced Wastewater Treatment: HUBER Active Carbon Filter CONTIFLOW® GAK and HUBER Disc Filter RotaFilt® Convince The Bickenbach Wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) will be the first WWTP in Hesse (Germany) to receive advanced wastewater treatment for the removal of trace substances. At the end of 2022, the wastewater treatment plant of size class 4 (35,000 population equivalents) will be extended by an ozonation system with a downstream four-line activated carbon filter stage and an upstream two-line cloth filtration as pretreatment. Among others, HUBER will supply two HUBER Disc Filter RotaFilt® units and 16 HUBER Active Carbon Filter CONTIFLOW GAK® units, commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2023. HUBER received lots for prefiltration and activated carbon filtration The overall project was put out to public tender in three lots. HUBER bid directly for the prefiltration and activated carbon filtration lots and received both contracts from the Bickenbach/Seeheim-Jugenheim Wastewater Association in November 2021 and January 2022. [...]Denitrification in the sand filter for nitrogen reduction Nitrogen is a basic building block of life and nature and, like phosphorus, is indispensable as a nutrient for all humans, animals and plants. Municipal wastewater contains various nitrogen compounds (including organically bound ammonium and nitrate). The removal of nitrogen is one of the main tasks of municipal biological wastewater treatment, because without sufficient nitrogen removal, the discharge of wastewater into receiving waters has significant negative effects on water quality and thus on flora and fauna. Denitrification Downstream Nitrogen Removal a Sand Filter Biological nitrogen removal in the course of wastewater treatment consists of the two process steps nitrification and denitrification, which take place in the aeration tank. In the nitrification process, ammonium is oxidised to nitrate; with denitrification, nitrate is reduced to elemental nitrogen, which escapes into the air. If upstream denitrification is not possible for space reasons or if the existing denitrification is not sufficient to meet the required limit values, downstream denitrification in the HUBER Sandfilter CONTIFLOW® can be applied. Denitrification takes place in the anoxic biofilm that builds up on the filter bed material of the HUBER Sandfilter CONTIFLOW ® . Denitrification does not require oxygen but easily degradable carbon. For dry aerobic treatment (composting) and wet anaerobic treatment (fermentation with biogas production), good mechanical pre-treatment of the supplied biowaste is essential for the reliability and performance of the entire treatment plant. Targeted treatment of the separated solids and the fermentation residues with the right machine technology reduces disposal costs. Tailor-made treatment of process water and wastewater enables internal water cycles, leads to reduced operating costs and enables sustainable use of water resources. Most important is not only the choice of effective and efficient processes, but also their implementation with most robust and dependable machines; both are also important for the quality of the generated products. HUBER products and solutions for your requirements Organic waste is supplied in solid or liquid form, the latter being mainly contents of grease traps. For reception bunkers we supply customised HUBER Manhole Covers made of stainless steel. The supplied waste is first ground in a mill and conveyed to a pulper whereby metals are separated. In the pulper, they are soaked in hot process water, mixed and disinfected. The thus generated hot slurry is then mechanically pre-treated in a HUBER Complete Plant ROTAMAT® Ro5 Bio (special Bio version) that is specifically adapted for this task, or in a HUBER Longitudinal Grit Trap Ro6 Bio . Debris and other disturbing solids (e.g. packing and wrapping materials) are removed with an integrated Fine Screen, and heavy mineral solids (e.g. stones, grit, sand and broken glass) are separated in an aerated Grit Chamber. The removed screenings are washed and compacted, the separated mineral solids are washed and dewatered in our HUBER Coanda Grit Washer RoSF4 . The compacted screenings are incinerated as solid waste, and the washed grit is reused as construction material. In order to remove even finer solids (e.g. hair and fibres) that could clog heat exchangers and form disturbing scum layers in the fermenter, the slurry is pumped through our HUBER Sludgecleaner STRAINPRESS® before being fed to the fermenter. Within the fermenter the organic substrate is anaerobically degraded whereby biogas is produced. The biogas is used to generate power and heat in a cogeneration plant.
