[...]WTE Wassertechnik GmbH takes over the 50% share in sludge2energy GmbH of HUBER SE WTE Wassertechnik GmbH, the service provider for the design and construction of plants for drinking water supply, wastewater disposal and thermal waste treatment, takes over HUBER SE's 50% share in sludge2energy GmbH. sludge2energy GmbH was founded jointly by WTE Wassertechnik GmbH and HUBER SE in 2012. The main business purpose of the company is the planning, construction and operation of thermal sewage sludge utilisation plants for the generation of heat and energy, which make an important contribution to waste disposal security and environmental protection. WTE Wassertechnik GmbH handles large-scale sewage sludge utilisation projects both in Germany and internationally and intends to further expand its market position. The experience gained so far in sludge2energy GmbH and the current project portfolio are a good complement to this. With the sale of the 50% share in sludge2energy GmbH, HUBER SE intends to withdraw from the business as a plant manufacturer for mono sludge treatment plants in order to be able to further expand and focus its successful strategic market position in the sludge drying sector. Fecal matter and other organic materials are removed and returned into the wastewater flow. As a result, a good wash press increases the BOD 5 load to the biological treatment process by about 6 %. After washing, the screenings are compacted to reduce the water content and increase the solids concentration. Dewatering is improved by the removal of organic materials during washing. A good wash press can achieve a weight and volume reduction of up to 80 % and thus consequently reducing the disposal costs.[...]
[...]Kinmel Bay, Wales HUBER Technology recently supplied, installed and commissioned three HUBER Belt Screen EscaMax®, a 6 mm 2D perforated plate fine screen and two HUBER Screenings Wash Press WAP® L BG8’s to Kinmel Bay, a Dwr Cymru Welsh Water coastal site in North Wales. Each HUBER EscaMax® Screen was designed for a hydraulic flow of 450 l/s. The existing inlet works contained two tank mounted Longwood’s escalator screens and could cater for 900l/s. They struggled to deal with the incoming flows, overtopped and bypassed regularly. With a new development of 1700 new houses, the existing works was condemned and a new open area was set aside for new inlet works on site. The new inlet works would be required to screen a total of 1250l/s. JN Bentley considered the use of hydraulic modelling to optimise the layout and to ensure hydraulic performance of the new inlet works and commissioned a scale physical hydraulic model. HUBER and Dwr Cymru Welsh Water visited the scaled physical hydraulic model and got to see first-hand the model in operation. The model layout was altered as a result of the model testing, the grit trap was rotated 90° in line with the inlet channels, and a low baffle wall was built to aid flow into the rest of the works. Once the results from the physical model were approved an order was placed with HUBER and work started on site. Installation of HUBER EscaMax® inlet screens and HUBER WAP® L commenced in Feb 2019. Full commissioning, optimisation and the provision of O&M Staff training of all the new equipment. [...]Cork, UK When DuPont needed to improve their on-site ETP performance, replacing the existing final settlement tanks with HUBER DAF units provided a compact solution. Background The site in Cork makes Micro Crystalline Cellulose Powder, a filler/binder for pharmaceutical and veterinary tablets. The raw material for this is Wood Paper Pulp. In the manufacturing process, large belt filters are used to recover the product as a wet cake but the filtrate and cake washings require treatment before discharge to sewer. The nature of the wastewater is similar to that found in a paper mill, rather than a normal chemical plant. In order to reduce the COD in the treated water, the site uses a large activated sludge lagoon to biologically break down the contaminants. This biological process generates solids, which also need to be removed from the flow. Historically this had been achieved using settlement tanks, but the site were looking to optimise performance as well as reclaim some of the space these large tanks occupied. Solution As one of the largest stainless steel users in Europe, HUBER were well placed to provide a high specification unit capable of dealing with the wastewater. With Dissolved Air Flotation units already in operation treating very similar wastewater, the client was able to visit existing plants as well as the HUBER manufacturing plant before making their equipment selection. The new HUBER Dissolved Air Flotation Plant HDF installation provides solids and associated COD removal form the waste water leaving the activated sludge lagoon, ready for discharge to sewer. All-round walkways make access to the DAF units very easy and the automatic polymer batching system reduces operator input. The units are installed outdoors and have solid covers over the top of the tanks, these provide protection from blown in debris such as leaves and prevent any wind or rain from affecting the process. Separated solids are floated to the top of the machine and removed by an automated mechanical scraper system, which moves the sludge into a sludge hopper for forward pumping to the site’s sludge storage tank. The client attended a FAT (factory acceptance test) for both the DAF and control panel. [...]Munich, Germany "Klinikum rechts der Isar" is the university hospital of TU Munich (TUM). There is an intensive cooperation between the university's research facilities and the clinical centre. About 5,000 employees dedicate themselves to the care of sick, research and science. Every year, about 60,000 patients profit from residential treatment and 245,000 from ambulatory treatment at the highest medical level. With about 30 clinics and departments and about 1,100 beds the hospital is a house of supramaximal care which covers the whole spectrum of modern medicine. Due to the close cooperation between the medical and research institutions patients profit from new findings in scientific studies at a very early stage. From 2012 to 2014, a new central sterile supply department (ZSVA) was built where medical products such as surgical instruments are cleaned and disinfected and come back sterile-packed. Safety of patients and personnel has top priority. The ZSVA unit is designed for a cleaning and sterilisation capacity of 90,000 sterile supply items per year. The Munich planning office PLANUNION designed the plant on the basis of the following parameters: Operating hours 4,000 h/a Flow rate 2.8 m³/h WW inlet to heat recovery system 50° C WW outlet from heat recovery system 34° C ∆ T of wastewater 16° C Efficiency of heat recovery system 96 % The installation space required for the heat exchanger is 6.5 m². The big challenge was the complicated integration into the existing building – the heat exchanger was divided into three sections, flanges were mounted and the sections reconnected on site. Another challenge for the planning office generally is control engineering and the definition of interfaces. Since November 2014, the energetic potential of the effluent from the ZSVA's dishwashers is used by the heat exchanger to preheat the demineralized water that is needed to operate the cleaning and disinfection devices. The temperature raise of the demineralized water cycle can be up to 20 °C. Through connection of the sensing devices to the building control system the temperature raise can be retraced any time. Also the volume flows can be controlled and documented this way. The plant has operated without interruption since the 4th quarter of 2014, ensuring the reliable utilisation of the energetic potential of the effluent from the ZSVA's washing equipment. In 2014, the degree of capacity utilisation of the ZSVA was 65% – the plant will have paid off after about 8.5 years on this basis. The plant has however been designed for the actual capacity expected for the next years. The fact that the capacity utilisation increases year by year has a positive effect on the economic efficiency of the plant.[...]
