[...]Šumperk , Czech Republic On Thursday, 12 October, the official inauguration of the sludge treatment plant at the Šumperk WWTP in the Czech Republic took place. With this state-of-the-art sludge treatment solution, the operator of the wastewater treatment plant, Vodohospodářská zařízení Šumperk, a. s. (VHZ) and its subsidiary, Šumperská provozní vodohospodářská společnost, a.s. (SPVS), have realised a milestone project and are prepared for all future environmental legislation and challenges in the field of sewage sludge treatment. Completed in only three months In a record time of only three months, the team of HUBER SE, the Czech subsidiary HUBER CS spol. s r.o. and their local technology partner Kunst spol. s.r.o. completed the installation, drying tests and commissioning of the sludge dewatering system with the HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® 440.2 and the sludge drying system with the HUBER Belt Dryer BT 12 FAS. Both machines are highly energy-efficient technologies whose development placed great emphasis on ease of operation. While the screw presses dewater sludge from the local wastewater treatment plant in Šumperk, the sludge drying solution is also designed to treat externally delivered sludge from surrounding wastewater treatment plants. The total capacity of the belt dryer is 8,000 t of dewatered sewage sludge. Advantages in operating costs decisive The advantages in terms of operating costs over an operating period of 10 years were decisive for the successful tender and award to Kunst together with HUBER's sludge treatment concept. Excellent results in dewatering degree and drying performance From the first start-up, all machines worked perfectly and delivered excellent results. The HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® was able to achieve up to 28% DR and is currently operating with a stable dewatering degree of approx. 22% DR. The belt dryer was immediately operated at and above its design throughput and a continuous drying performance of >95% DR. Thanks to an excellent team, this project will help to advance sophisticated sludge treatment processes – and it shows that experienced project partners and technology providers are crucial for successful implementation. We are very proud to be part of the project and wish a good hand in the future operation of the plant. The HUBER Belt Dryer BT in the Šumperk project is the first “new” generation thermal dryer supplied by HUBER to Eastern Europe. Thus, it also represents a HUBER milestone project for the entire Eastern European region. The entire handling of the project and all project phases went extremely smoothly and professionally. This enabled us to distinguish ourselves noticeably from market competitors already during project execution. This difference was recognised and repeatedly praised by our partner Kunst as well as by the plant owner VHZ and operator SPVS. The company emphasizes the high importance of its headquarters and local production facilities for the company's further business success and has again invested into the expansion of it production capacities. Due to the necessity to meet the challenges of the present and future growth, another building project has been finished which provides additional production capacities. The official inauguration ceremony took place on October 28, 2014 in the presence of representatives of the board of directors, supervisory board, works council and guests of honour from politics and economy. Ludwig Eisenreich, mayor of Berching, proudly reflected in this speech all the company's building projects that have been completed in the past with unfailing regularity. Since 1992, numerous building permissions (see box) for the expansion of office and production capacities at Berching have been issued: "Berching needs visionaries like the Huber family". The municipality would be glad to provide the infrastructure required for such exemplary entrepreneurship, he said. Willibald Gailler, head of the district authority, and state secretary Albert Füracker expressed their thanks for HUBER's loyalty to the location Berching, the company's innovativeness and local social engagement. The new production hall received a blessing from the Berching parish priest Arthur Wechsler. Now as this new hall has been completed the company's production capacities have grown by another 2,200 m² and 40 additional work places. This latest project has been the logical consequence of the company's previous building measures. Vice CEO Dr. Oliver Rong, responsible for engineering & production, added that the new hall has been planned and built with a special focus on improving working conditions and energy efficiency. The hall has therefore a modern concrete floor which allows for low-vibration transports with forklifts and lifting trucks. Furthermore, the hall is equipped with modern LED lamps for better illumination and significantly reduced energy consumption. With this new production hall HUBER is able to further manufacture competitive wastewater products at the location Berching and has laid the foundations for the company's continued success. However, increasing population density as well as developments in the industrial, commercial and agricultural sectors pose ever greater challenges for a secure water supply. Increasingly, seawater and river water are being extracted to meet the growing demand. Water extraction from surface waters: removal of pollutants by mechanical purification gaining in importance Due to the increasing extraction of water from surface waters and the simultaneously rising level of pollution of these waters, the removal of pollutants by means of mechanical cleaning with the use of screens and coarse and fine screening machines is becoming more and more important. As the first treatment stage, mechanical screening determines the efficiency of the subsequent process steps as well as the economy and safety of the overall plant during operation. HUBER has successfully completed several water intake projects HUBER has been facing this challenge for several years. [...]HUBER and ATE Group recently signed a joint venture agreement. HUBER has a 30% minority participation in the new company that will be named A.T.E. HUBER Envirotech Private Ltd. According to the agreement, the joint venture company will manufacture HUBER products in India, through their plants in Vasai, Maharashtra, and cater to the markets in India and Bangladesh. Speaking of the collaboration, Anuj Bhagwati, head of ATE Group, said: "As India is building its infrastructure and industry, we need new approaches and products for wastewater management. This joint venture will serve India and Bangladesh with products from HUBER and cater to industrial wastewater treatment projects in major international markets, leveraging their network. We have had a partnership for 5 years and now the JV will strengthen our presence." The German company has put in undisclosed investment in the new company. [...]Coarse screens are the protective equipment of a screening system. Their task is not removing the incoming screenings from the water flow, but coarse screens are used to protect downstream finer screening systems (or machine technology in general) in the event that massive amounts of coarse material or extreme-size debris occur. Such unusual events in the operation of a screen include the occurrence of large-volume flotsam (e.g. tree trunks, tyres, etc.), man-sized screenings rolls, suddenly occurring huge quantities of screenings or large debris and sediment loads at the channel bottom. Such disturbing material can - provided that no coarse screen is available - severely impair or interrupt the operation of screening systems and also lead to damage to the respective machines. The art is to select the right coarse screen for the application in question so that the screen reliably detects and removes the impurities from the channel during operation. With the HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax ® and the HUBER Coarse Screen TrashMax ® , HUBER has two screening systems on the market that cover most of the requirements of common coarse screen systems. But what to do if there are applications and/or channel and structure dimensions where these machines reach their limits? The answer to this question is the new HUBER Grab Screen TrashLift, whose functional principle is really simple: A solid stainless steel shell acts as an "excavator bucket" to clean the channel bottom as well as the bar rack section. This excavator bucket is operated cyclically by a winch system. [...]Weltenburg, Germany In 1999, Weltenburg Abbey suffered severe damage from exceptional heavy storm floods. Also in the following years they were repeatedly faced with flood problems. In 2002, when the Abbey was restored step by step, they therefore decided to buy a flood protection system. The Abbey and the Water Management Office Landshut together with the architecture office Magerl and HUBER SE developed special flood protection elements. These elements should prevent the ingress of flood water through the nine basement windows and the 55 windows on the ground floor of the buildings along the Danube. This solution had to pass the first crucial test recently. Abbot Thomas finally was relieved to announce that the worst was over without any damage to the Abbey, thanks to all the helping hands and the new flood protection elements. The many faces of flood protection Flood damage is no exceptional case at Weltenburg Abbey as the recent flood some weeks ago has shown. According to Spiegel Online the flood in June could have been the most expensive natural catastrophe in German history. The insurance group Munich Re estimates the total damage suffered in Europe at more than twelve billion Euros. The flood destroyed not only individual houses and complete streets of houses but also public utilities, such as pumping stations, sewage treatment plants, water catchment and water distribution plants. HUBER offers most reliable flood-proof manhole covers and doors to protect all these important facilities. The use of these products prevents the breakdown of important supply and disposal facilities for the protection of the population and avoids expensive cleaning up work. No damage in Weltenburg The continuous rainfall in June this year led to a critical rise of the water level in the Danube Gorge at the "Weltenburg Narrows". But this time the Abbey was well prepared for the flood. Firemen and volunteers had installed the 55 mobile flood protection elements as a preventive measure. The flood level reached its top of 7.15 m on June 4, 2013. The installation time was very short thanks to the low weight of the individual elements. The elements are made of combined materials, namely aluminium and stainless steel. Even the biggest elements have therefore a weight of not more than 60 kg and can easily be placed in position by two persons (normally firemen). It turned out that it is absolutely uncomplicated and manageable for everyone to handle the elements. Thread rods were used to attach the elements to the window grates from inside. A round rod or screw driver served as pretensioning tools. When the flood water would rise up to the protection elements the water pressure would even increase the tightness of the elements as the sealing would be forced against the masonry walls. The firemen had received several training courses and exercised the installation of the elements several times before. Maximised efficiency of flood protection systems Water finds its path everywhere. Protection concepts must consider the rain water from above, rising levels in rivers and lakes but also the rising groundwater level. Dykes, walls, retention tanks, mobile solutions and impounding reservoirs are other elements of flood protection systems. The HUBER product range for successful flood protection comprises far more solutions than those installed at Weltenburg Abbey. We develop overall concepts to meet the requirements of each individual project. Our concepts are characterised by economic efficiency and high quality. The main focus for all applications is on the ideal price performance ratio. Other important criteria are absolutely no maintenance requirements and the reliable protection from wilful vandalism. Special structures need special solutions For Weltenburg Abbey we manufactured four different types of protection elements for the differently high windows and marked them with big coloured signs. The elements are stored on stanchions. The storage system has been determined together with the fire brigade and the architecture office. These and other measures, such as underground sealing and stop log elements on the entrance gates, will in the future prevent the Abbey from serious damage caused by flood water and preserve this unique historical ensemble for the generations to come. When we developed the flood protection solution for Weltenburg we had to keep in mind not to change anything on the facades of the listed heritage buildings. The facade itself consists of plaster which is not so plane and smooth. The sills and one jamb around the windows are made of natural stone and show tolerances of 25 to 30 mm. These tolerances could only be equalised by covering the whole window including the sill and the jamb. Due to our long experience in the manufacture of pressure doors and flood-proof doors tightness was no unsolvable problem for us. We had our prototype tested by the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich and they confirmed the absolute tightness of the core.[...]
[...]Osečina, Serbia The company Podgorina Frucht supplies to customers in the food industry high-quality fruit juice concentrates, purées, flavours, dried fruit and frozen goods. All their products are made from selected Serbian raw material. The wastewater generated during production is treated in the company's own in-house sewage treatment plant to such an extent that the clean effluent can without problems be discharged directly into the small Jadar river. The well trained company personnel operates a SBR plant for biological wastewater treatment. As a special feature of this project a HUBER Dissolved Air Flotation Plant HDF S is used to retain the activated sludge within the system. "S" stands for the application "sludge flotation". The HUBER Dissolved Air Flotation Plant HDF S is able to reliable meet the high effluent standards of <10 mg/l AFS even with seasonally greatly varying inlet concentrations. Compared to the basic HUBER Dissolved Air Flotation Plant HDF type "S" models excel for a longer residence time and a considerably increased free water surface. The voluminous surplus sludge can therefore be separated reliably and effectively. Moreover, a HUBER Dissolved Air Flotation Plant HDF S needs three to four times less space than a secondary settling tank that provides a comparable capacity. Through appropriate control of the preceding plant components both HUBER Dissolved Air Flotation Plan HDF S 15 units can be fed virtually continuously. An absolutely solids-free effluent is achieved by adding only a small amount of polymers (few g/kg DS), this is ensured through analogously monitored NTU values below 5. The flotation plant proves its capability even with solids loads higher then the maximum design values of 150 kg/h and 30 m³/h. The customer can therefore rely on additional reserve capacity for the future. The separated flotate sludge with a concentration of approx. 5% DR is recycled into the bio-system, the pre-thickened surplus sludge can optimally be dewatered to the maximum with a HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS®, in this case a size 440 unit. Due to the sludge volume reduction in excess of 80 % the customer profits from tremendous savings of transport and disposal costs. In addition, due to the high separation efficiency of the screw press in excess of 98 %, the return load to the bio-system is minimized.[...]
[...]HUBER Technology Nordics supplied a mobile, high-performance wastewater treatment solution for the start of production at a newly built fish processing plant in Ulvan, Norway. The containerised rental plant with integrated HUBER Dissolved Air Flotation Plant HDF was installed on behalf of Måsøval Fiskeoppdrett AS Slakteri and ensures compliance with environmental standards during the commissioning of the new production facility. Mobile wastewater treatment at the highest level A HUBER HDF S8 rental plant with a throughput capacity of up to 100 m³/h is used. The entire plant is housed in two 40 ft high cube containers. One contains the flotation technology, the other all the necessary peripheral components. The container solution enables quick commissioning and flexible site selection – ideal conditions for temporary use in industrial production processes. The Ulvan site in Trøndelag, on the west coast of Norway, is characterised by fish farming and processing. The Måsøval Group is one of the established players in the field of sustainable aquaculture. The new plant is a central component of the company's expanded production capacities. Project progress and objectives The rental system was commissioned on schedule in September 2024. The rental period is initially set at 12 to 24 months, depending on the progress of parallel planning for a permanent installation. The temporary solution serves as a bridge to ensure legally compliant and efficient wastewater treatment right from the start of production. The project has been executed in close cooperation between HUBER Technology Nordics and HUBER SE. Expansion of the rental fleet with Q-PRESS® Since March 2025, the HUBER rental fleet has been expanded to include the Q-PRESS®: A HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® 620 for dewatering the flotate sludge was additionally supplied and commissioned on site. This addition optimises the treatment process and at the same time reduces disposal costs in the long term. The Q-PRESS® 620 was delivered and commissioned by our Swedish HUBER subsidiary. Summary The project in Ulvan impressively demonstrates how flexible and powerful HUBER rental plants can be in an industrial environment – as a temporary transitional solution or as a pilot project for a later permanent installation.
