[...]Groß-Gerau, Germany The Gerauer Land waterworks supplies around 65,000 inhabitants in the Hessian district of Groß-Gerau with drinking water. The water supply amounts to around 3.3 million m³ per year. The water supply is ensured by extracting groundwater from their own ten deep wells, then treating it to produce drinking water by means of iron removal and demanganisation, and feeding it into the network via a central pressure booster station. After more than half a century of operation, the valves, pipelines, pumps and technical doors had reached the end of their service life. When renewing the system, the planners' declared aim was to significantly increase energy efficiency in particular, but also to improve building protection. In the course of the refurbishment, burglar-resistant stainless steel doors made by HUBER SE from Berching were therefore installed, which increase the protection of the rooms through increased burglar resistance. For here too, the company wanted to have state-of-the-art technology. Drinking water is our most important resource and should therefore be adequately protected against any impairment. For this reason, it must be ensured that it is impossible for unwanted intruders to have a chance to enter a water supply system. The burglar-resistant HUBER Security Door TT2 of resistance classes RC3 and RC4 (formerly WK3/WK4) with test certificate is ideally suited for this application. These stainless steel doors are specially designed as access doors for drinking water supply structures and meet the requirements of DIN EN 1627. Every HUBER stainless steel door type TT2 can be opened from the inside, even if the door is locked from the outside. For doors used in the water supply sector, this is an important aspect with regard to occupational safety and accident prevention. The door leaves, which are longitudinally ground, offer an attractive design and are foamed with a CFC-free insulating core. To ensure a long service life, the frame and door leaf are welded under inert gas, pickled in an immersion bath and passivated. Various options, such as sheet metal or wood panelling, allow the HUBER TT2 security door to be optimally adapted to customers’ requirements. We are happy to consider and implement special requests of our customers, e.g. regarding lacquering, logos or door shapes, such as round or pointed arches. Often, the protection of historical monuments also plays an important role and must be taken into account when designing the exterior of the doors. All doors for the Gerauer Land pressure boosting station are equipped with magnetic and lock-bolt contacts so that the building shell can be monitored completely. Security doors for outdoor installation are additionally fitted with a sheet metal doubling to ensure that the door can be opened even in direct sunlight. This is often a problem in spring or autumn when the sun heats up the doors. However, it is not only drinking water supply structures that require special protection against unauthorised access. Remotely located shafts, such as deep wells or spring shafts, are also at high risk to be manipulated by unauthorised persons. It is not necessarily an " attack " that is to be assumed here; often it is vandalism, whereby increased mechanical security can prevent access to the shaft. For this reason, the HUBER product range includes various burglar-resistant manhole covers. These manhole covers are also certified to DIN EN 1627 in resistance class RC3 and are available in different sizes. With the renewal of the aged central pressure boosting station, the Gerauer Land Waterworks is making an important contribution to energy saving and to an optimal protection of the building envelope. [...]Linz-Asten, Austria Replacement of coarse screens, refurbishment of screenings treatment system, new screenings removal and transport station On the largest sewage treatment plant in Upper Austria with a design size of 950,000 PE, the coarse screens were replaced and the screenings treatment system was refurbished. Furthermore, a screenings removal and transport station was built. The entire municipal area of the regional capital Linz and 39 neighbouring municipalities with a total catchment area of 900 km² are drained via the regional sewage treatment plant Asten. In addition, the biodegradable wastewaters from big industry companies are processed, such as wastewater from the coke smelting works Linz of Voestalpine Stahl GmbH and DSM Chemie. The industrial wastewater amounts to approx. 30% of the total flow. The maximum flow from the catchment area, which is drained primarily through a combined system, is 8.8 m³/s while the maximum dry weather flow is 2.7 m³/s. The location of the sewage treatment plant is characterized by the Danube barrage Abwinden-Asten. The pondage of the dam power station extends up to the city area of Linz. The location of the sewage treatment plant in the city’s eastern neighbour municipality Asten at the dam power station has therefore been selected to ensure the Linz sewers can drain by gravity on their way to the STP. The wastewater flow is lifted into the sewage treatment plant and there treated mechanically and biologically. The treated flow is passed to the tailwater of the power plant. The four old parallel-flow rake screens on site with 80 mm bar spacing were installed long ago, around the year 1979, when STP Asten went into service in the form it is now. The fine screens were replaced in 2000 by revolving chain screens with 10 mm bar spacing. HUBER supplied the associated conveyors and screenings treatment systems for the new fine screens and the wash press for the coarse screens. As the regional sewage treatment plant Linz is a training site for sewage works operators and also frequently visited as a destination of excursions, and of course for technical reasons as well, it was necessary to replace the coarse screens by a state-of-the-art solution and reduce the odour nuisance inside the screening chamber. The old parallel-flow screens with 80 mm bar spacing were dismounted and HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® units with 35 mm bar spacing installed instead. The new screens have a smaller bar spacing and higher separation efficiency so that larger amounts of screenings are generated but the revolving chain screens can cope with this as their surface is cleaned very quickly. Double screw conveyors with 600 / 500 mm diameter were installed at right angles to the four new coarse screens and the four fine screens, which are all arranged side by side. The screw conveyors transport the screenings into HUBER Wash Press WAP® units size 2x8. Each of the wash presses has a capacity of 16 m³/h raw material throughput. The two double wash presses dewater the screenings and push them through four pipes installed at a steep angle, up to above the screenings loading point for removal and transport. At the end of these four pipes the screenings plugs are broken up to avoid undefined big agglomerations. At four points, the broken up screenings fall into a screw which distributes them into one of two covered roll-off containers (which one depends on the direction of screw rotation). Each of the containers has a gable-roof shaped cover. Under the “ridge” of the cover, a screw conveyor with open bottom distributes the material longitudinally in the container. When the container is full, the distribution screw reverses its conveying direction and starts to fill the other container. [...]Castres, France HUBER's first small grit treatment system in France Castres is a French municipality in the South of France which is located on the river Agout and characterized by industrial enterprises. The best known local enterprise is the pharmaceutical and cosmetics company Pierre Fabre Laboratories which has its headquarters in Castres. In the middle of the industrial zone, not far from the Pierre Fabre Laboratories you will find the sewage treatment plant of Castres. The plant is designed for 95,000 PE and clarifies the wastewater of the population of Castres and of the nearby industrial enterprises. Previously, there was no satisfactory solution on site to treat grit from the sewage plant and sewer grit. The grit generated on site was dumped into a concrete structure and dewatered statically. The quality of the dewatered end product did not meet the requirements of the French legislation for landfilling. In November 2014, a HUBER Grit Treatment System RoSF5 was installed on WWTP Castres. The challenge of the project was to keep the space requirements of the machines as low as possible and install all components at the same height level so that no further building measures would be required. The planning result was HUBER's first small grit treatment plant in France and it has been installed on a narrow existing unused portion of the WWTP. The raw material is dumped into the existing concrete structure where it is statically dewatered in the course of time. In the next step the dewatered raw material is transported by a wheel loader into a tank with a capacity of 2 m³ from where it is delivered at constant flow into the wash drum by a horizontally installed screw conveyor. Inside the wash drum fine material < 10 mm is separated from coarse material > 10 mm by the 10 mm drum perforations. A special screw conveyor transports the separated coarse material into an adjacent container. The fine material is pumped into the COANDA Grit Washer RoSF4 together with the wash water from the wash drum. Due to the special design of the Grit Washer it is achieved that the material is classified and washed out, so that 95% of the grit <= 0.25 mm with a loss on ignition of below 3% is removed. The grit treatment system has been integrated into the existing sewage treatment plant in a way to ensure that the COANDA Grit Washer can additionally process sediments from the grit trap that are introduced also into the 2 m³ tank. The Grit Washer is designed for a maximum total solids load of 1 t/h. Presently, the plant is used to process sewer grit and road sweepings. The volume of material to be processed daily amounts to up to 10 m³ road sweepings and up to 8 m³ sewer grit. The system described here permits the cost-effective separation of sewer grit and grit from sewage treatment plants into different fractions and optional further utilisation of the treated materials. The treated grit with a low loss on ignition (below 3%) can for example be used as construction material for roads and sewers. Furthermore cost for landfilling can be reduced by decreasing the weight of disposed material. In total, this leads to reduced costs for the disposal of sewer grit, grit from sewage treatment plants and road sweepings. At the same time, the load of mineral solids is significantly reduced with the consequence that maintenance costs and wear on the sewage treatment plant are reduced and the performance of the grit trap improves. [...]Morgantown, West Virginia, USA USA keep relying on HUBER when it comes to screening wastewater upstream of membrane plants The HUBER fine screens for the protection of downstream membrane plants have a long tradition in the USA. Due to continued further development we have been able to offer our customers tailored solutions for membrane screening and implement machines for a variety of different applications. Our screens were also selected recently for the project Morgantown where they will protect Evoqua's Memcor hollow fibre membranes. Morgantown is a city and county seat of the Monongalia County in the north of the US state West Virginia. The town was founded in 1810 and is situated on the Monongahela River, near the border to Pennsylvania. Due to the rapidly developing infrastructure and associated additional loads arriving on the sewage treatment plant Morgantown, the wastewater treatment on site had to be adapted to cope with increased flows and to meet also the EPA standards. Three years passed from the first contact until order placement. Finally, HUBER USA managed to receive the order for the complete mechanical pretreatment equipment including the membrane screens. The throughput capacity per unit is 608 l/s. The fine screenings from each machine flow through gravity lines into a central pipeline through which they are flushed to a pump sump. From this pump sump, the water-solids mix is pumped to two HUBER Micro Strainer ROTAMAT® Ro9 units. The micro strainers are installed approx. 6 m above the fine screen. Due to its unique and special design the HUBER Perforated Plate ROTAMAT® STAR liquid screen can be installed at a small inclination angle. This, in addition to the 30% larger screening surface of the screen basket provided by the innovative STAR design, makes it possible to achieve very high throughputs. Moreover, the separated screenings can be passed on to further treatment as a water-solids mix without the need for an additional discharge screw. A great advantage of this solution is that the screenings do not have to be treated in the machine but can be treated centrally even at a distant location. Extra screw conveyors that would need a lot of space are therefore not necessary. This concept has already been implemented in many installations around the world and this project will be the first of this kind in the USA. It is a very interesting and economical system for projects where space-saving solutions combined with high throughputs and maximum freedom of planning are required for the treatment of screenings.[...]
[...]Production increase or conversion of production make it necessary to upgrade the wastewater treatment systems For reasons of cost and efficiency, industrial wastewater treatment plants are often planned and constructed according to the current capacity utilisation of the facilities. [...]Plants for sludge treatment (e.g. HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS ® , HUBER Disc Thickener S-Disc) or for pre- and secondary treatment of industrial and municipal wastewater (e.g. HUBER Flotation Plant HDF) are usually purchased in Germany. This involves prior planning, authorisation, construction of infrastructure and buildings, as well as permanent responsibility for the acquired plant technology. In addition, the process from idea to implementation often takes several years. Industrial plant operators, in particular, increasingly wish and demand to rent rather than permanently purchase machinery and equipment. [...]Replacing the primary clarifier with a fine screen – HUBER CarbonWin® In the HUBER CarbonWin® process, the primary clarifier is replaced by a fine screen. This results in the following advantages: Only 1/10 of the space required compared to conventional primary clarifiers Minimised investment and operating costs Suitable to be integrated into existing plants The primary clarifier is the last stage of the mechanical pre-treatment of a wastewater treatment plant and works according to the anaerobic sludge stabilisation process. In the primary settling tank, undissolved organic and inorganic substances settle at low flow velocities and with sufficient retention time and thus build the primary sludge. This is then added to the digester – usually after mechanical thickening – together with the excess sludge. In the anaerobic process, the sludge is converted into digester gas, which can be used for energy generation. Sewage treatment plants that work according to the principle of aerobic sludge stabilisation usually do not have a primary clarifier. However, the advantage of the simpler process technology is offset by high energy consumption, because sludge stabilisation takes place simultaneously with biological wastewater treatment through a correspondingly long aeration period (high sludge age). Aerobic sludge stabilisation is more common in smaller wastewater treatment plants up to about 20,000, sometimes up to 50,000 population equivalents (p.e.). Driven by constantly rising energy costs and technical innovations in the field of sludge digestion and digester gas utilisation, anaerobic sludge treatment is gaining in importance also for smaller sewage treatment plants designed for fewer than 50,000 PE. For an economic and energy-optimised conversion from aerobic to anaerobic sludge stabilisation, the use of a primary clarifier is usually unavoidable. Carbon Removal The HUBER CarbonWin® Process The HUBER CarbonWin® system offers an interesting and economical possibility to do removal of carbon without a primary settlement tank when converting from aerobic to anaerobic sludge stabilisation. In order to achieve the required carbon removal from the biological treatment stage, HUBER uses the fine screening process with the HUBER Drum Screen LIQUID. The advantages are low investment costs and a 90% reduction in space requirements. The HUBER Drum Screen LIQUID can also be used to relieve an existing primary clarifier.
