[...]Munich, Germany A total of 1,816.6 million hectolitres beer were produced worldwide in 2008. Assuming an average fresh water consumption of 400 litres for one hectolitre beer, this means a fresh water consumption of 726.6 million m³. About one third of the fresh water, however, could be replaced with service water as it is not necessary to use highest drinking water quality in all production areas. A part of the saving potential of 240 million m³ water can only be exploited with the use of new technical solutions. Under a research project of the Bavarian Research Foundation and in cooperation with the institutes of the technical university of Munich, we have therefore examined a process technology solution consisting of modular components for the advanced treatment of brewery wastewater. The aim of the project is reuse of treated water without the addition of chemicals, or with only a small amount of chemicals. We have installed a test plant at Erdinger Weißbräu Werner Brombach GmbH to treat a partial flow of the effluent from anaerobic reactors. The first treatment step is flotation with subsequent biological treatment in a membrane plant which uses immersed rotating ultrafiltration membranes. The wastewater to be treated flows through the feed line into the flotation tank and is intensively mixed with dissolved air in the inlet pipe already. The gas bubbles produced have a size of 20 µm to 70 µm and are passed into the plant via a clog-free valve. An additional integrated lamella separator increases the effective separation surface of the plant so that its maximum admissible hydraulic load is higher than that of conventional plants of equal dimensions. The effluent from the flotation plant, which is virtually free of solids, is collected in a storage tank from where it is passed to the biological treatment system, the membrane bioreactor. The nitrification tank, installed downstream of the denitrification stage, is aerated by membrane aerators mounted on the tank bottom. The effluent from the nitrification tank flows by gravity into the filtration tank with the membrane module where the permeate is discharged at intervals by a submerged vacuum rotation membrane. The rotating membranes are the core part of the MBR system and the MBR plant achieves high clarification efficiency with continuously low concentrations of below 70 mg COD/l. Due to this high effluent quality the treated water is suitable for further treatment or reuse.[...]
[...]Freystadt, Germany For almost two decades, the municipality of Freystadt and HUBER SE have maintained a good business relationship: several HUBER machines are in operation at the town’s wastewater treatment plant and, since 2018, a HUBER service and maintenance contract for the sludge treatment machines has also been in place. The service contract was ordered in 2018 together with the delivery of new machines and now regularly expired in mid-2022 after the warranty extension from 2 to 4 years, which is always possible with a maintenance contract. We are particularly pleased that we can continue our service partnership after this period and that a HUBER service and maintenance contract has been concluded again. Professional competence and good customer service Together with his colleagues Mr. Breindl and Mr. Meixner, Mr. Weihrich takes care of the Freystadt WWTP, which is designed for 8,000 population equivalents, and explained to HUBER Service in an interview the reasons for signing a HUBER service and maintenance contract again: As one of the advantages of such a service contract he mentioned the technical competence and good support by the HUBER service technicians. The machine technology installed at that time around the sludge turner and the screw press had been technically new for the team of Freystadt WWTP four years ago. The HUBER service staff provided competent answers regarding operation and control of the new machines. Fast assistance and great support What they particularly appreciated about this service solution was that they were helped on the spot and often just in time, and that the team received competent help from HUBER Service without any problems. Mr. Weihrich also appreciates the fast troubleshooting by HUBER Service and the great support by HUBER service advisor Erwin Wagner, who is always there to assist with help and advice. Expert maintenance, operational safety and higher efficiency Freystadt WWTP had again decided in favour of a HUBER maintenance contract in order to keep machine failures and malfunctions as low as possible, as in previous years, he said. The HUBER service and maintenance contract and the associated regular expert maintenance have increased operational reliability, making the operation of the plant even more economical. Quality, transparency and calculable costs Among the decisive criteria for a HUBER service contract, Mr. Weihrich mentioned the quality and transparency of the HUBER Service and its performance, the calculability of costs due to the fixed price associated with the maintenance contract, and thus better traceability of the costs incurred, also with regard to annual budget planning. Smooth communication with HUBER service technicians The HUBER service technicians, who are on site for our customers week after week, also received positive feedback from the Freystadt WWTP team: friendly and courteous, they say – uncomplicated communication is simply possible here. Screen building: HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® CF One of the reasons for implementing this modernisation project were two defective shredders that were regularly flooded and caused significant bypass problems. HUBER solved this problem by installing one of its multi-rake bar screens, which has proven itself in thousands of installations worldwide. This allows work to be carried out on the operating deck. The HUBER RakeMax® CF screen with its vertical design enabled the engineer to combine both shredding channels into one larger channel and to route 100% of the influent through one screen. This is capable of handling the full hourly peak flow. Special baffles for the inlet allow for an emergency overflow (bypass) in case of a power failure of the plant. The screen is also very easy to maintain because it has no bottom bearing and thus no submerged wearing parts. Throughput of over 90,000 cubic metres per day Due to the robust and vertical design of the HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® CF and therefore only minimal adaptations to the existing structure required, HUBER Technology Inc. could convince the customer. The screen is designed for a throughput capacity of 24 million gallons per day (90,850 m³/d). The HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® CF consists of a U-shaped stationary bar rack arranged parallel to the direction of wastewater flow. The wastewater streams into the open face of the screen and then out through both the left and right bar rack. The solids are efficiently retained inside. The retained screenings are carried vertically upwards out of the concrete channel and transferred to the upper discharge area. Compared to shredders, the arriving screenings are efficiently removed from the wastewater stream. Primary sludge screening: HUBER Sludgecleaner STRAINPRESS ® To ideally protect the digesters from disturbing solids entering from the primary sludge, a HUBER Sludgecleaner STRAINPRESS® separator was installed on the influent side. This is designed for a throughput of max. 314 gallons per minute (approx. 72 m³/h) with a solids content of 3.36% DR. In the solids discharge, the sludge screen achieves approx. 35% DR. Sewage sludge drying: HUBER Belt Dryer BT 18 In addition to the modernisation of the sewage treatment plant, the customer also asked HUBER to address the existing problems in sewage sludge treatment. The recent wet weather made it difficult to apply the sewage sludge to the soil due to the odour nuisance, and storing the material for later spreading was not an option for the customer. Looking for new ways to treat and dispose of sewage sludge, the customer opted for drying the sludge, thus ensuring long-term disposal security. The best drying process: customer visited HUBER reference plant In order to select the most suitable and best drying process, the customer visited HUBER's reference plant in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. There he could see for himself the quality of the HUBER belt drying system, especially since the turnkey plant built by HUBER in 2014 has been in operation to the customer's full satisfaction since completion. Over 28,000 tonnes of sludge per year The mechanical installation of the BT 18 belt dryer started at the beginning of August 2022 and has already been completed. The final commissioning of the dryer is scheduled for the 2nd quarter of 2023. The amount of sewage sludge to be dried in La Crosse will be 28,654 tonnes per year in the future. [...]Freystadt, Germany HUBER sludge treatment solution on STP Freystadt – a concept that pays off for the operators The newly installed process chain replaces the previous system with contract dewatering and its associated problems. STP Freystadt is designed for approximately 8,000 PE. The sludge on site was previously dewatered only once a year. After the implementation of the new HUBER systems, comprising a HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® and a HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE®, the plant operators can look forward to a smoother and easier plant operation, and the disposal costs incurred by the municipality of Freystadt will now decrease significantly. Sludge is pumped from the storage ponds and cold digesters to the dewatering building where a HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS® 280 is installed that dewaters the sludge to approx. 24% DR. Two HUBER Screw Conveyor Ro8 T units transport the dewatered sludge into a greenhouse where the solar dryer HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE® is waiting for the sludge to be dried. The new HUBER Sludge Turner SOLSTICE® 9 underwent an extensive redesign with the focus on easy maintenance, reduced wear and long lasting product life. Furthermore, all motors of the HUBER machines and the ventilators/aerators have been replaced by motors of efficiency class IE4. A new safety system has been developed in cooperation with the Technical Inspection Authority (TÜV). The installation of this system has additionally improved the aspect of work safety for the plant operators. The many beneficial details can be explained and presented best directly on site. The two-dimensional screen (perforated plate) ensures the reliable removal of hairs and fibres and avoids that: fibres and hairs hinder the stable operation of membrane plants and increase maintenance requirements, these materials tend to entangle on the membranes and lead to reduced membrane plant efficiency these products form tresses in the wastewater treatment plant, this would impair oxygen supply to the aeration system with the result of problems occurring in the sludge treatment line These screens with a two-dimensional perforated plate rely on the unique system of HUBER ROTAMAT® machines which combines screening, washing, transport, compaction and dewatering in a single unit. Additional advantages, such as shear-force resistant and wear resistant screen surface cleaning and a high frequency of screen surface cleaning per minute, guarantee maximum efficiency and operating reliability. Perforated plate for two-dimensional screenings is primarily used for screens with apertures > 1 mm. Conventionally, a screen basket with bigger external dimensions is used to achieve larger dimensioning with the result of significantly increased investment costs and even building costs as a bigger channel is required. We have solved this problem with our ROTAMAT® Perforated Plate Screen RPPS-Star: The perforated plate of the screen basket is folded in axial direction like an accordion. The zig-zag folds form the star-shaped screen basket (RPPS-Star). This increases the screen basket surface by about 30 % with still the same nominal diameter. The filter drum of the ROTAMAT® Perforated Plate Screen RPPS-Star is cleaned by a water jet spraying against wastewater flow direction. This ensures that fibres and screenings are reliable washed from the drum surface and removed by the centrally arranged conveying screw. With this innovation we have made a ’traditional’ machine fit for the future. We are well prepared for higher future requirements related to separation efficiency and hydraulic throughput. [...]Bitterfeld Wolfen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany The sewage treatment plant Bitterfeld-Wolfen clarifies the municipal wastewater of the sewage treatment association "Westliche Mulde", the industrial wastewaters of the companies P-D-ChemiePark Bitterfeld-Wolfen and Industriepark BAYER Bitterfeld, and the groundwater of MDSE GmbH (large-scale ecological project of the regional authority for the release of soil remediation responsibility of the German Federal Land Saxony-Anhalt). The total capacity of the sewage treatment plant is 586.000 PE (population equivalent). The main wastewater clarification takes place in several separate pretreatment stages (mechanical, chemical-physical) and in one common aerobic biological treatment stage. To produce biogas, a separate wastewater flow from methyl cellulose production is treated in anaerobic reactors together with a partial flow of the municipal wastewater which is heated by heat exchangers. The municipal wastewater is prescreened in our ROTAMAT® Membrane Screen RoMem Pro 1600 to protect the heat exchangers. The RoMem screen is equipped with a 1.0 mm square mesh. The two-dimensional structure of this mesh ensures that a very high degree of fibre and hair retention is achieved. The RoMem Pro version is a further development of the standard system. The well-proven concept of HUBER ROTAMAT® machines excels especially for its drum-shaped screen basket and installation angle. The latter allows to combine several functions in one unit (screening, washing, removal, compaction, dewatering). For applications with increased throughput requirements HUBER has developed the RoMem Pro version which makes it possible to continuously wet a larger area of the screen surface and thus significantly increase throughput capacity compared to the standard design. A smaller design is therefore sufficient to achieve the same results but with reduced space requirements, construction costs, investment costs and spray water demand. The simple design of the Pro version also permits easy retrofitting of existing screens so that an increase in throughput capacity can be achieved without the need for any structural alterations of the channel. [...]Over the years, the screw presses of the Q-PRESS ® series have become one of the most successful HUBER products. The latest leap in development took place with significantly more wear-resistant and powerful scraper lips and matching, higher-torque gearboxes with reduced electrical energy consumption. Current further development: significantly changed filter geometry The two long-proven sizes 280 and 440.2 will in future be equipped with a significantly increased open filter surface. In order to increase the open filter surface, the first, relatively coarse screen section in the inlet area will be significantly lengthened, and the middle, somewhat finer screen section will in future be equipped with a wider bar spacing. In this way, more than 30% more open filter area can be provided in the throughput-relevant first half of the filter than before. The enlarged open screen area enables a higher sludge throughput or, with unchanged throughput, a reduced screw speed and thus a higher dewatering result. The wear-resistant wedge wire filters, proven over many years, will continue to be used. All new HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS ® units will be equipped with the new filter geometry. Less operator intervention, better dewatering results A new control mode of the Q-PRESS ® shows that further developments and improved operator benefits at HUBER are not necessarily only achieved with stainless steel: Previously, the filtration pressure in the filter basket was decisive for the automatic adjustment of the screw press shaft speed. If the filtration pressure was too high, the speed was increased to avoid soaking of the press cake and to reduce the filtrate load. If the filtration pressure was too low, the shaft speed was automatically reduced to ensure sufficient filling of the press. This mode of operation was and is the basis for trouble-free, unattended operation. New: extension of the control mode for maximum dewatering performance What is new now is an extension of the proven control mode with the focus on maintaining the maximum degree of dewatering. As a control parameter, the engine torque now also functions as a measure of the dryness of the sludge cake. If the torque or the degree of dewatering is too low, the screw shaft slows down automatically. Because the torque has significantly lower variances than the filtration pressure, which is directly influenced by the floc quality, the press can be operated with significantly lower variances of the shaft speed – ideally even with a largely constant shaft speed. Experience shows that the pressure level in the press then drops, which automatically reduces the shaft speed and the torque or the degree of dewatering subsequently remains stable in the maximum range. Automatic fine adjustment for ideal dewatering result The fine adjustment of the press with the aim of achieving an ideal dewatering result, which previously depended on the time and experience of the operator, is now also carried out automatically and unattended. New control mode can also be retrofitted The control mode extended by the torque can be retrofitted to HUBER Screw Press Q-PRESS ® units and HUBER control systems back to year of manufacture 2018. The significantly smoother press operation with more stable dewatering degrees and less operator intervention is therefore not only reserved for new customers.[...]
[...]Wendelstein, Germany Since 2008, the ZV zur Abwasserbeseitigung im unteren Schwarzachtal (Lower Schwarzach Valley Sewage Treatment Association) has been retrofitting existing relief structures with screening systems to separate floating and coarse materials. These retrofits contribute significantly to greatly improving the discharge quality of rainwater from the combined sewer system into the receiving water. Installation of a screening plant at the Röthenbacher Straße stormwater tank with overflow In the stormwater tank with overflow at Röthenbacher Straße in Wendelstein, just outside Nuremberg, a screening plant had to be installed in front of an existing overflow sill. The system had to be dimensioned so that the entire discharge volume of 2,234 l/s could be reliably treated with a required screen aperture of 6 mm. The very limited permissible backwater levels during system operation also had to be taken into account for dimensioning. HUBER Storm Screen ROTAMAT ® RoK2 meets all requirements The HUBER Storm Screen ROTAMAT® RoK2, size 700, was able to meet all these requirements without restriction. Decision in favour of proven technology Based on the positive operational, maintenance and separation performance experiences gained from the previous four screen installations, the decision was made to purchase another HUBER Storm Screen ROTAMAT® RoK2.
