The screenings from municipal wastewater treatment mainly consist of household waste-like materials, feces, paper, and mineral particles. The screenings volume depends on the aperture size of the screening system.
The solids content of municipal, untreated screenings varies from 5 – 20 %, depending on the type of screen. The organics contained in the screenings amount on average to approx. 90 % of the dry residue [DR].
The objectives of screenings treatment are:
Wash Presses
By adding wash water and mechanical energy, feces, and suspended organic matter are washed out of the screenings in a wash press and returned to the wastewater, thus positively influencing the C / N ratio of the wastewater to be treated.
After washing, the screenings are well compacted so that the water content in the washed screenings is significantly reduced. Depending on the selected washing process and press type, a weight and volume reduction of up to 80 % can be achieved.
The weight and volume reduction also means a reduction in disposal volume and thus directly influences the costs that have to be paid for the disposal of screenings.
