HUBER pre-screening solutions for membrane systems impress around the world
Membrane systems, especially membrane bioreactors (MBR), are wastewater treatment technologies that combine biological processes with membrane filtration. These systems are used in some sewage treatment plants instead of the conventional activated sludge process. A typical MBR system consists of a biological reactor in which microorganisms break down organic matter and a membrane filtration unit that separates the purified water from the solids.
Solids separation prior to membrane filtration
To ensure optimum performance, membranes must be protected from large solids. For this purpose, two-dimensional separation of solids with a screen with between 1 and 2 mm bar spacing is considered optimal. HUBER offers various systems in this range, each with its own advantages.
System types and applications
Both the HUBER Drum Screen LIQUID with perforated plate or as STAR version and the HUBER Rotary Drum Fine Screen ROTAMAT® RPPS or STAR are used. The two machine types are used for different requirements. For lower throughputs and small applications, a small size of the ROTAMAT® RPPS is sufficient. For large wastewater treatment plants, the Drum Screen LIQUID with its small footprint is the ideal choice.
Treatment of screenings and flexible system solutions
When it comes to treating the separated screenings, the well-known system with integrated screenings washing and compaction can be used with the ROTAMAT® machine solution. The flume that conveys the screenings from the Drum Screen LIQUID is very flexible and several machines can be interconnected so that the screenings can be treated collectively, e.g. with a HUBER Micro Strainer ROTAMAT® in tank.
HUBER solutions in international projects
Due to the different requirements of each plant, we recently commissioned a Drum Screen for use in two projects in Australia, for example. Two projects in Greece are also equipped with this solution. On the other side of the globe, several projects in America are running with ROTAMAT® STAR machines, which reliably protect the downstream membranes from contamination and thus ensure optimised operation.
